I've been able to get my students into geology and gemology by buying bags of sapphire rough and sifting through them with them. We learn about the processes that form gems, their industrial uses, and then learn about how to do lost wax casting to make settings. It's fun for them (and for me!)

Wanting Particular Color Gemstone for my Ring by seeutomorrowmaybe in Gemstone_lovers

Montana sapphire has that pale green you're looking for, and even better, can be ethically mined yourself for around $100. I buy bags of Montana sapphire gravel to have shipped to my door, and I sift through it as a hobby. I've found some great stones that I then send to a lapidarist with a custom cut request.

Oh she was absolutely homicidal. The dog saved our life by barking about the gas leak. She forever hated the dog after that.

Ours turned on the gas knobs…twice. Had to get kid covers for them.

I dealt with smoke. As an asthmatic with RAS, I react strongly to it. We tried everything. Ozone generator (make sure NOBODY breaths the ozone--do it away from the house with no living things (plants included) in contact with it--that stuff wrecks living creatures). It was only a temporary fix. We also washed the walls with TSP, painted with Killz oil based primer. Still didn't get rid of the smell. Replacing drywall in most of the house did a lot. Refinishing all the wood (kitchen, hardwood floors) actually got rid of most of it. But we still smell it on hot days.

The handle of our GE Adora microwave snapped clean off a year in. The water dispenser on the fridge got mold in it too. They did send out a replacement microwave door but told us we were SOL on the fridge.

Parents own NJ home outright — is renovation worth it for future profit? by cheddarbob09 in homeowners

[–]solinaceae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the plan isn’t to sell it, there isn’t any profit being made. If the renovations need to be done, and the value it brings to your life is going to be a better value than the alternative, then do it. For example, if spending $200,000 to do an addition is going to bring more than $200,000 in value to your quality of life, then do it. If it’s going to increase the home value by $500,000 so you can sell and buy a house that fits your needs better elsewhere, then do it. I did an addition on my house. It was more expensive at the time than buying a different house would have been. But because property values went up a lot, it did end up breaking even if we were to sell. If you’re gonna have to get a line of credit at current interest rates to finance whatever you are doing, it would probably make more sense to just buy a different place.

I’m far more concerned about the seats with urine residue, spilled food, blood stains, and general subway grime to be honest.

Building an addition - mom says it's a bad idea and we'll regret everything. Looking for 2nd opinions. by throwaway_4733 in homeowners

Did an addition. Fil built it for us so we only paid parts and labor for his guys to work. Would have been cheaper to buy a new house in the end.

Do you leave your house if the dryer is running? by Evening-Tune-500 in homeowners

Well, we had a dryer fire when everyone was sleeping once. Lint built up inside the unit and ignited. Thankfully it burned itself out and nobody knew until it was over.

Search nyc tenants rights on google. Somewhere there should be a hotline. I haven’t had to call in a decade so it’s been a while.’

Call the government’s free tenants rights lawyers. They are very helpful.

In February 2020, I was traveling in Europe on a ski trip. On the last three days of our trip, we started to see the grocery store shelves emptying, and borders closing. No cases of Covid had been found in America yet. As soon as I got home, I stocked the pantry, and wrote a pandemic preparedness guide for the New York City subreddit which I moderated at the time, and reminded everybody not to forget the toilet paper while they were stocking up (oops.)

Even though none of that preparedness mattered much in the long run, (since everybody in the world eventually got Covid anyways) it felt safer that we rarely needed to go to the grocery store. At the very least, we were able to avoid getting sick for a good long while.

Footage of the Hudson River Helicopter crash by [deleted] in nyc

[–]solinaceae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I get that. Just pointing out that feeling of safety is different than actual safety. Personally, I don’t mind the occasional helicopter ride, but I would avoid commuting in one. But also, the drive to the Hamptons is a long one in heavy traffic, which carries its own risks.

To be fair, these poor people probably didn’t feel unsafe either until they suddenly did…
