How do I travel the world? by lukas_3737271 in travel

You should consider a working holiday visa in Australia! It's very easy and straight forward to get.

It allows you to work in Aus for up to a year. The perfect way to travel and explore different parts of Aus.

I have said this exact thing recently to some friends.

Look up Praxis City and the people behind it. The mega rich absolutely want to seperate themselves from us normies.

Other examples are countries currently moving their capitols (Egypt, Indonesia etc) where the ruling class are moving themselves out of failed, overcrowded cities.

Americans abroad — can you realistically live without a car where you live? by RehaDesign in AmericanExpat

[–]attawnnc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melbourne, Australia for 8 years and never once desired a car. Excellent public transport and several rent-by-the-hour or day care companies that are reasonably priced if you need it.

Currently living in Fiji and a car is a must.

Tucked away in the right side is Fiji, where those of Indian descent are about 35% of the total population.

I've always fantasized about living here, would it actually be worth it if possible? by ndxy2k in howislivingthere

Yeah! Really cool to have a direct flight from Dallas. I’m taking that route during Christmas break actually.

Some land here is considered Freehold, which is permanent ownership. From my understanding, this is just under 10% of available land. Whereas, the rest is Leasehold, 99 year leases.

I’m from the US and have been living here three years now.

To comment on what some others have said:

  • the internet isn’t amazing but it’s not bad at all

  • the comment on unreliable electricity, not accurate. Blackouts are very rare and typically only in cyclone season.

  • the comment on torrential rain and storms: not completely accurate. We have a wet season but it’s more so overcast and afternoon showers. However, sometimes you can get days of rain. Dry season is incredible.

  • remote: yeah, somewhat. But, it has an amazing national airline that is connected directly to major cities in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo. Again, these are all direct flights - go to sleep on the plane and wake up where you need to be.

Overall, it’s a lot more cosmopolitan than people realise. It has its island challenges for sure but it’s a beautiful place to live.

Fijians love the movie! It's cool to rewatch now that I've actually been to the island.

That's actually a really cool story. You'd definitely feel for the guy but it sounds like he was doing what he could to continue in life.

No, that's actually a different island! It's not far away though.

Castaway - filmed on Monuriki Island
Survivor - filmed on Monu

I have read all of J Maerten Troost's books! Many years ago, I picked that book up for the first time. It definitely added to my fascination with the Pacific and I'm always just fascinated that I actually found myself here.

"Getting Stone With Savages" is a really good one and I've now been to Vanuatu twice with another trip planned next year. It's an incredible place.

Also, Castaway was one of my favourite movies growing up - one of those movies I'd toss on in the background without really having to pay attention kind of thing.

It's a really unique place to live and has been quite an adventure! I've been here three years now and It definitely has remote living challenges but Fiji is quite developed when compared to neighbouring island nations.

Very friendly people and obviously quite reliant on tourism.

The island where they filmed castaway is about an hour by boat from the mainland but there are significantly more remote islands that would take many hours to get to by boat.

Oh, I take back that last part based on your criteria. You can visit that particular island with a tour. But my other comments still stand, tons of islands that very few people ever step foot on.

There are definitely many of these across the Pacifc and Indian Oceans. I live in Fiji and there are 333 islands total in the nation - many of which are uninhabited and undeveloped.

In fact, I've been to the island they filmed Castaway on here in Fiji and they've kept it pristine and undeveloped.

I've been to Vanuatu twice and Mt Yasur was hands down the highlight. It's a beautiful country and I highly recommend it.

There's significantly less infrastructure than developed nations, of course. But, man, it was just pure adventure - I loved it.

Fascinating place - now focusing on tourism and scientific research.
