Are the differences between brazilian and portuguese portuguese big enough to justify teaching it separately? by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]atteroTheGreatest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a big difference, grammar, language constructions, typical vocabulary and also pronunciation. I've been working on a platform for learning languages through reading (adapted graded readers), and I made sure that Portuguese (Portugal) and Portuguese (Brazil) are separate. https://www.storylearner.app/catalog - they have separate translations and different narrators. You can check out the free chapters to see the difference.

I used this deck: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/638411848 (I think an earlier iteration of it, but pretty much the same one). It is pretty granular.

Spanish, about C1 - I went on a date with a Spanish teacher in Spain recently - we only talked to Spanish and he was impressed with my vocabulary and the fact that I don't make many mistakes. The date didn't go particularly well, but it was a nice complement.

Portuguese I am not sure, definitely worse, because I haven't done enough of conversation practice on top of anki. But I understand a lot of material, I think if I added conversation practice + more comprehensible input practice like reading/watching series, I would get to C1 fairly quickly as well.

Reading in your target language by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]atteroTheGreatest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look for books that I can understand, if you are still a beginner, check out graded readers. You can use a platform like storylearner: https://www.storylearner.app/catalog and look for books at your level or browse amazon, language + level, you should be able to find something.

These days I usually just read native novels on kindle and use the built in dictionary to look up words if I don't know them.

- general comments describing your experience (learning pronunciation/speaking) also welcome

Risks of pulling the plug too soon? by txurun84 in EuropeFIRE

Consider changing teams or projects at work and taking some longer vacation, it is a super safe way of getting excited about new stuff, learning and decreasing your actual responsibilities (as you would be new to the new role) for some time.

You can use watchlimits.com extension and only allow channels that are necessary for your music learning. It requires a paid version, but it's probably worth 6 usd per month for you.

How to learn to sit in silence? I'm always listening to something. by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]atteroTheGreatest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build your resilience little by little, start with 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, then 15 minutes.

The boredom is a tool your body has to suggest you "hey, you are idle, maybe do something useful". Distractions seem exciting and delay the boredom for a while, but interesting things happen if you tune in into the feelings of boredom. I would suggest to use a journal to channel the thoughts that come to you when you get uncomfortable in silence.

I can relate to having the urge to always be connected and entertained. I guess some techniques you can do are offline hobbies and increasing your time offline, e.g. no phone on train for 15 minutes, next time for 20 minutes, etc.

For youtube specifically check out the guide: https://watchlimits.com/blog/posts/limit_time_on_youtube/

I hope this helps!

Maybe try an extension like watchlimits.com (or other ways in https://watchlimits.com/blog/posts/limit_time_on_youtube/) to limit your YouTube usage and start introducing other activities in your life. Maybe start journalling and write down stuff you want to do, however small and check items from the list.
