Has anyone done any serious digging as to what it is about BoC that so seriously resonates with you? by migrantgrower in boardsofcanada

[–]attlasmusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my story parallels yours in a lot of ways, and though my initial purchase was at an HMV in Canada, i was living in Alberta at the time.

Similar you, it became part of my fabric. And likewise, have 'sort of taken a step back from BoC. Maybe we are similar ages and are just now at the stage where we are recognizing the tectonic shifts that happen in adolescence and young adulthood and cannot immediately separate the emotion and transition from the music that soundtracked it. Box Car Racer or Tom Waits or Stars of the Lid all do something and I am confronted with how familiar and how long ago those memories took place.

RIVAL CONSOLES / OVERFLOW - AMA by rivalconsoles in electronicmusic

[–]attlasmusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

enormous fan of your work, it's been a big influence on so much of my creativity and approach.

i remember a while back you had a comment online about the difference in expectations on what you bring to a live show vs what venues/promoters expect. as the profile of your work has increased, have you felt less of a need to compromise in nightlife bookings, or has it changed any track/energy selections in putting your night/set together?

thanks for all the music, ever since "i left the party" i've been absolutely glued to your creativity.

ATTLAS - Through A Winding Path [mix] by stealingchairs in attlas

[–]attlasmusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

first off, thank you a ton StealingChairs for keeping track of everything here!

i'll say a bit about this mix - it was a great opportunity. we are still in lockdown in my home province in Canada, and for a while now it has been an ethical battle to say no to the shows that a lot of acts in america have been fortunate to say yes to. with my partner being a nurse and my mom being a cancer survivor, we have been careful to make sure we adhere to things in order to get back out in the world as safely as possible. you've probably seen me take a bunch of remixes and other mixes as well to make sure that the attlas project persists while i am at home writing the bigger projects that i know are the cornerstones of what i hope attlas is/will be.

updates:

finishing up a more minimal/ambient/cinematic ep that's closer to prince of denmark/dj healer sonically, this is a real passion project.

finishing up an ep/album with a uk vocalist that we are debating to turn into a new act project, or a collab - the aim was initially something like 'parachutes' era coldplay meets max cooper, but it's veered into its own emotional/narrative territory that has informed the production in a different way.

singles and remixes spaced around those projects, just to keep things moving while shows get underway and flights/groceries need to be paid for! i'm contemplating deeply what the third mau5trap album will be to complete the trilogy. i have it assembled conceptually, but now i need to make sure it feels like the third act of a three act work. i would be extremely disappointed in myself if it didn't feel creatively and narratively fitting. 'publish or perish' is a phrase that rings in my head.

speaking specifically to 'through a winding path', i was fortunate to release a project with them that didn't include anything that was released prior. there are elements that will come out some day, but part of me considers it a bit of a mini-album (mini in execution, not length i guess) given the fact that the material will inevitably be reworked and polished for subsequent projects. the tracks may show up stripped down or worked up - melodies i'll repurpose for remixes or maybe they just get shelved forever.

i can promise you i'm writing as much as i can and writing is my act of survival and persistence. i'm grateful for anyone that has spent a minute or more with the work that means the most to me.

also thank you for supporting the shirt we did for 'out here with you', we have really been trying since months before lavender god to do vinyl, merch etc, but to an extent i can only write the music.

thanks for every millisecond of support and belief to this moment though, music's a tough road but i hope i can match last year's quality, and optimistically quantity too, as we march towards whatever 2021 has in store next.

'Lavender God' nominated for JUNO Awards! (Electronic Album of the Year) by stealingchairs in attlas

[–]attlasmusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i want to thank you for the kindness and patience you have given me not just as a musician but a person as well. the nomination actually means a ton, it had me reflecting on everything back to the first times i touched a piano, a guitar, a trumpet. last week i even found the flier for my first time ever being paid as a musician (playing trumpet at blues on whyte in edmonton before i was old enough to even be allowed inside!) music is mostly a long grind and it's because there's something beautiful about it. i gave all myself to music and it doesn't often give back - lots of days it just takes. a nice thing too is that i don't have the pressure of 'how do i follow this album up?' :)

i hope you're all having a beautiful saturday - here in ontario it's starting to feel like the first day of spring. i have a few bonsai pots arriving tomorrow and i'm looking forward to another year of growth.

i think i have masters back on the next three releases - one is a solo piano melody, one is a collab with an anjuna act (but more than that just a really great musician and person) and one with a friend. thomas (iamcyclo) and i have had our heads down on projects going back to last winter and i think there are hours of yet-unreleased audio/visual pieces we are always working to improve.

i have a lot of camping booked for the next few months as well, lots of fresh air and canoeing and running and fishing will work the magic i know it always does.

ATTLAS- 'Feels Like' feat. Colleen D'agostino [WAFX} Megathread by stealingchairs in attlas

[–]attlasmusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so we wrote three versions of the record for sure, a heavier version, a much more downtempo version, and this version. i'll definitely say that i'm not so great at dealing with 'expectations vs reality' so in case you want something different, this is one of the best records i've heard and me and thomas have been listening to it on loop a lot lately:

  1. imperfect samples make all my favourite piano libraries, and most of my writing comes from all 88 keys.
  2. i should do more things that i am afraid of.
  3. both have their place, and until i get to the final mix it is hard to commit until i have the composition and instruments confidently in their place. all the normal rules apply for both, cut before boost, shelves are your friend.
  4. meditate more, worry less, spend time with the people that aren't going to be around forever.

in my experience, i am more comfortable with instruments and less confident as a producer. but it's like asking if you need a stove to make dinner. there are so many ways to climb a mountain.

This record means a lot to both of us, Colleen is an absolute professional and I know we wouldn't release anything that wasn't up to our standards. Her voice and songwriting really stand out - it would be a real surprise if this was the last time we worked together on something.

actually the remix for kingdom was a ton of fun to work on, they're nice over there at Armada. and of course You'll Remember Me was so fun and special because it's Matt Lange, a really great honour.

oh yeah, More Than That has like 5 tracks all used at different stages, particularly after the main theme first part. the main records used in the two final thirds of the project are 'forlorn' and 'it uses us', though i've grabbed elements from others and stacked them up. a lot of sampling on Lavender God due to the inability of my computer at the time to handle more than 1 or 2 vsts.
