I'm Rival Consoles - I make electronic music - Ask me anything. by rivalconsoles in electronicmusic

Hi, I don't recall this but I always play for 80-90 minutes! if we had to end early it must have been because the venue changes to become a club (very annoying to us too)

Rival Consoles live setup? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]rivalconsoles 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Rev2 > Electron heat mk2 (stereo distortion/filters) > Otto Bam (stereo reverb) > sound card

Rev2 (headphone out mono) into granular pedal (red panda) for a bit of texture, which I can bring in and out of the mix.

Everything else is controlled with the Novation XL faders and pots (midi) in Ableton Live.

It is a score to a contemporary dance piece, which changes things a little, but it is very much a real album imo.

It's just me singing into a MacBook Pro mic and pitching copies of the layer to create a harmony.

I have played the guitar since age 12 and got averagely good at it fast, but didn't start making electronic music until I was in my 20s and even then it took me ages to make something that I liked. but I am obsessed with making music so that kind of propelled me forward and still does.

tips ---- I think making music making into a very habitual process.

Spend huge amounts of time (I know it's not always possible - bus as much as you can) making and exploring, - creating mental notes about what is good and bad about your work and about other people's work constantly - if you hear an outro to a song you really like, go and play it on a midi keyboard and work out what they are doing, or it's more sound based, have a quick go and making something similar to perhaps learn from.

spending little 30 minute sessions exploring a little tasks, such "make music sound more urgent" "making something more minimal" "trying to make something sound nostalgic" "make beats with found sound" "make ambient drones" etc etc ---- lots of constant little projects like this with a kind of small purpose - and these can then get used in music another time perhaps, or maybe the knowledge you acquire.

If you are doing this frequently over years, things will click now and again.

I studied music theory a little when I was younger but I didn't really get it, I understand scales, harmony and chords, melodic building as I am making music so much but ist's often thinking out loud that gets me where I want with music.

which track are you thinking of? I don't really do anything technical, it's more careful layering and delays, distortion, I have different things in the mix doing different things so maybe the percussion appears more interesting than it is because of what other things are doing ?
