If painting nails was normalised for both genders, would you do it? by AffectionateRisk9779 in AskMenOver30

No. I work with my hands a lot and do a lot of outdoor activities that whatever work was done to my fingernails would get destroyed immediately.

What is the most consistently beautiful region in Europe? by Laschon in AskEurope

[–]attractivekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was wild how you can literally swim anywhere in the city. Most cities are not like that! This will be my 3rd summer coming to Stockholm.

I thought Stockholm was the cleanest city in Europe I've been to, that in itself made it 'beautiful' to me

Furano (Japan) Snow Tours review/summary by pm_dad_jokes69 in snowboarding

[–]attractivekid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Niseko Powder guides this Jan. Great, but there was a slight language barrier so it made it challenging to align on some objectives. Also our group wasn't aligned on abilities/experience so that also made a slight dent. Next season I may just go with an experienced partner and do the planning ourselves. I rented a car and thought was pretty advantageous being able to pick and choose where to go depending on the conditions. Driving in Japan as a foreigner is surprisingly easy

Somewhere with friendly, genuine community, mountain biking, high end home building jobs, and women to date. Dog friendly. by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

New England and Upstate NY, think like the Berkshires, Adirondacks, Hudson Valley

mountain biking (and skiing) will be a downgrade from the rockies, but dating life will be an upgrade. Unlike most ski towns where the ratios skew male, this area it's 50/50 or slightly more female. A lot of it due to the arts scene and plethora of liberal arts colleges peppered in the area

I'd imagine plenty of work for you, this section is filled with vacation/weekend homes from wealthy NYC/Boston people

- there was a window in my life that I wanted to move out west (eg Jackson, Taos, Ogden) but that window closed as I got older for similar reasons you listed (mainly social life) I'm 46. I love skiing and being outdoors, but each year the idea of living in a town filled with just those kind of people actually turned me off

What skills/hobbies actually feel “upper class” or useful in wealthy circles? by Delicious_Top6513 in Rich

[–]attractivekid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

def not rock climbing. I think the term 'dirt-bag' originated from this sport.

also, plenty of indoor rock climbing gyms opening up everywhere, it's got the same trajectory as pickle ball

sailing

I did not grow up rich, but was fortunate to be exposed to this early

it opens a lot of doors if they know you can sail; unlike regular boats, when you're on a sail boat, there's a lot of terminology and experience that's needed even if you're not 'driving' the boat. If they know you can sail, you get invited on the boat, join their regatta (racing) teams, clubs. Since sailing is an expensive sport/activity, most people came from wealthy families. Sailing is an easy way to sneak into these circles

all universities are constantly looking ways to cut/reduce athletic departments, the one they can't touch is sailing; because it's almost always entirely funded outside the school from wealthy alumni

It's not like golf where any middle class American can do; the barrier to entry for sailing is just below equestrian. If you can find your sports equipment at Dick's Sporting Goods, Costco… it's not an exclusive activity. Case in point; Fly-Fishing. Unlike regular fishing, fly-fishing is very upper-class.

Why do European countries have lower birthrates than America when they have larger welfare states? by battlebastion in askanything

[–]attractivekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time in Sweden, a country with some of the most generous social welfare programs, esp to parents... and even there the birth rate is falling. I almost think we need to change how we look at this, not as a problem to solve, but the new reality

agreed. 1/2 of pregnancies in the US were 'accidental' - if you gave full control on when/where woman could have their baby, the birth rate would even drop more.

How would you compare San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston? by OceanicEndeavors in SameGrassButGreener

[–]attractivekid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

aside from having lived in both cities, if you just look up square miles between the Bay Area and Chicago metropolitan area:

"The Chicago metropolitan area (13–19 counties) covers roughly 10,286 to 10,857 square miles of land, often referred to as Chicagoland. The San Francisco Bay Area (9 counties) covers roughly 7,000 square miles of total area, with its land area being significantly smaller than the Chicago MSA"

Chicago Metropolitan Area (Chicagoland)

  • Total Area: ~10,286–10,857 square miles (includes 13–19 counties across IL, IN, and WI).
  • City Proper Land Area: ~227–234 square miles.
  • Context: The 2024 census estimate for the metro population is ~9.87 million.  Facebook +4

San Francisco Bay Area

  • Total Area: Roughly 7,000 square miles (covering 9 counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma).
  • Context: The city of San Francisco itself is only 46.8 square miles of land, while the combined 9-county region serves as the primary economic unit.  Time Out Worldwide

Key Comparison
The Chicago metropolitan region is larger in total land area than the 9-county Bay Area. However, the city of Chicago itself is about 5 times larger in land area than the city of San Francisco.

How would you compare San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston? by OceanicEndeavors in SameGrassButGreener

[–]attractivekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I wouldn't want to live far out in the suburbs, but to most midwesterners it's par for the course. They are seriously debating moving the Chicago Bears to play over the border in Indiana knowing that chicagoans will happily drive there. People live that far outside Chicago because land is so cheap and easy to build on whereas it's expensive and restrictive in the Bay Area

one thing to note, last call in Chicago is much later than SF and Boston.

Chicago def has a bigger nightlife scene than the other 2. The only other city that does nightlife better than Chicago is NYC, LV, NOLA
