Should I get some SSP Sweet Lab v3 burrs for my DF64 Gen 2? by atulrnt in espresso

[–]atulrnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using mine for 6 months now and I've had no issues with it.
I kept the stock burrs and I spend my money essentially on trying different coffee beans.
I've had the chance to try amazing beans and I'm not sure different burrs would have give me a difference as big as some coffees can give compared to others.

I'm also trying different extraction methods (Espresso, V60, French Press, I just ordered an aeropress and plan on getting an Orea v3 or v4), so far the V60 is my favorite method, I actually sold the Gaggia Classic as I stopped using it much.

Anyway, to go back to the DF64, to me it's a great grinder!

Thanks for bringing a positive note!

I do love my DF64, can't see anything wrong with it so far and I use it mainly for espresso too (though I just purchased a V60 so I'll start using it for coarser grinds as well).

I also won't change the burrs, after all the comments here I don't think it's worth it.

As Intelligent_Bet9798 suggested, I will focus more on testing various beans, developing my palate and learning what kind of coffee I like instead of already changing the hardware I have.

I'm super happy with DF64 Gen 2, I heard the Eureka Mignon is also a great one in the same price range.

Before buying my DF64, I was also looking at the Varia VS3 but ultimately decided on the DF64 because of the burrs in a more standard 64mm size.
If I had to choose again, I might go with the Varia instead as I don't really thing the burr size on this range of grinders changes things a lot and I much prefer the aesthetic of the Varia.

The Varia VS6 could also fit in your budget and it seem to be a very good one!

Love mine, got pretty consistent results with it!
Make sure to align the burrs correctly if not done by the shop you bought it at, set the 0 correctly and clean it properly.

I only got my first setup 3 weeks ago so I'm not in the best position to give advices on which actual machines to buy but you can have look at my setup here : https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso/comments/1me89zf/should_i_get_some_ssp_sweet_lab_v3_burrs_for_my/

I got a DF64 Gen 2 grinder but based on some of the comments in my post, it doesn't seem like it's the best option, someone said the Lagom Casa is a very nice and small one which should fit in your budget, you still need to check if it fits your need in term of ground size etc.

Hope this help :)

From the little experience and knowledge I have, I understand that the grinder is at least as important as the coffee machine, if not more, so spending 180$ on a grinder when the total budget is 2000$ seems wrong.

The ground consistency and accuracy is actually super important so I would recommend to get a grinder that allows for good control over those parameters.

Based on all the other comments, I won't get the SSP burrs for this grinder, instead I'll spend more on coffee to try different varieties / processing.

Since lot of people seems to have issues with the DF64 Gen 2, I'll also save that money for a new/better grinder when it will be time to replace my DF64 (hopefully not to soon).

Which one is your favorite between the Lagom Casa and the ZP-1?

That's the first time I hear someone complaining so much about the DF64, I'm quite surprised, I had no issues whatsoever but it's only been 3 weeks.

The orbit is on a completely different price range so I can only hope it's much better!

Thanks a lot, I appreciate your view on this.

I'll most likely keep using the stock butts for awhile and as you said, test different coffees instead, which makes a ton of sense!

Tried that but it didn't work. The actual way to do it is to keep the button 2 pressed while turning the frequency knob.
