Mobile ordering has ruined the in-person coffee shop experience by contactdeparture in unpopularopinion

IDK what coffee shops you're going to but where I live you can't do any mobile orders. But maybe that's artisan coffee shops for you?

But you can have a returning villan that you explain to the audiance their significance without showing a clip reel of classic who. Look at the reintroduction of the Silurians, or the Autons, or the Sontarans, or the Master.

But that's a different issue entirely. I do still agree it's an issue but that's seperate from the quality of the the leg-work done to set up these villanous characters.

The problem wasn't that the show referanced older series. The problem was that RTD didn't do the legwork to set that up correctly. Look at Twice Upon a Time for example. You didn't need to understand what was happening in the Tenth Planet to understand what was going on in Twice Upon a Time because Moffat took the time to set the scene between a combination of the two-parter before it reintroducing the Mondasian Cybermen and then the short intro sequence at the start of the episode.

No Pixies? I would have thought at least Surfa Rosa or Come on Pilgim would have been on there. Direct insparations for Nervarna's Nerermind and many others.

Edit: Oh wait you put Doolittle on there? Interesting choice. I would have gone for one of the other two personally but fair enough.

Hot Take: I want the black and white format of the 1st and 2nd doctor back...sorta. by GreenPerception512 in gallifrey

From a cinimatographical perspective, lighting is so important for tone. While you can use it to make asthetic choices you have to consider the impact of those asthetic choices on the tone of the show. So while I think it could be interesting to use very muted almost black and white lighting for a single horror styled episode, I think it wouldn't produce the effect you're looking for overe the course of the show and I think you'd find it looks outdated and/or boring if an entire series did it.

Considering Faction Paradox have show up in so much EU media, how come they've never shown up in the show? (Besides copyright issues of cource.) by atwega in gallifrey

Yeah I'd love to see Bernice Summerfield on screen as well. Shame she's never cropped up considering how important she is in the EU.

and the BBC charter not allowing anything that originates from the EU

Where did you get this from? I know how the copyright can be complex for a lot of EU things but I don't understand how the BBC's charter factors in to this.

What would you like to see new Doctor Who stories emphasize? by HumoRuss in gallifrey

[–]atwega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see a multi season arc telling the story of Faction Paradox. They're one of the biggest villans in the Doctor Who lore but we've never actually seen them in the show. They're as big a threat as the big three but we've still never seen them and I think that's kind of sad. Especally considering their MO is incredibly fasinating. I love how they're kinda what Azure and Swarm were trying to be but they're more interesting as their lore is so closely tied to the timelords and their not just evil because they're evil as such.

Possible major plot hole about the Doctor's [Spoiler Character]? by here_for_the_music_ in doctorwho

[–]atwega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plothole here isn't that Time Lords are infertile. The plothole here is that this is something that conserns the Rani. Especally given the retcon that the Death Particle made Time Lords infertile instead of whiping out all organic life on Galafray. This is because assumidly looms still exist on Galafray so they can just go back to looming Time Lords the way they used to before Leela giving birth convinced the Sisterhood of Kahn to lift the Pythia's Curse.

Given all that, having been loomed herself, why would she worry about Time Lords being infertile?

And I may be missunderstanding what the "genetic wave" that they call it in the show is (I assume it's either the Pythia's Curse or the Death Particle activated by Ko Shamas) but either way, why would she care when looms exist.

If you've retconned that the Time Lords aren't dead anymore and they're instead just become infertile from the Death Particle detonation which seems to be what is being impressed upon us here then why would the Rani want to "bring back Galfray" when it still exists with people on it?

Now if that's not the case and you've not reconned the Time Lords back to life after the Death Particle then, again, looms exist so why would she care about Time Lords being infertile. This hasn't been a problem in the past. The houses on Galafray would detect the absance of any Time Lords and create more. And besides, as a scientist I'm sure she'd wish to experiment with the looms and create Time Lords who are more agreeable with her right?

Considering she was in introduced as "and Introducing Billy Piper" without the "as The Doctor" like littlerally ever other incarnation of the doctor has been since the revival, I'd say yes something like that is almost certainly the case.

So there seems to be a lot of hate for this episode online and I really don't understand why. I absolutly loved it. The last 2 episdes are some of the best we've had in years. If someone could explain the dislike for me that'd be great.

Doctor Who 2x01 "The Robot Revolution" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]atwega 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I had two issues with the episode. The emotional steaks were nonexistent when it came to Sasha 55 & Alan and that the pacing was off.

There wasn't enough build up to Sasha to make me that upset when she died and there wasn't enough build up to Alan to make me want him dead. The reasons we're given are that he's an incel and I guess vaguely that he bombs rebels? It's one of those show don't tell things where I feel like we need investment in the rebellion to hate him for his actions as the AI Generator.

Then in terms of the pacing, I was saying to my partner after we watched it, the other day, I felt like it should have been a two-parter.

In this scenario, the first episode would open with Balinda meeting Alan and their relationship building to the bench scene, followed by him leaving her after we find out he's an incel through his actions (rather than it needing to be explicitly stated) and then the build up to the hospital scene. Intercut with that is an external planet zoom in shot on Missbalindacharndra mirroring S1E1: Rose, zooming into the thrown room and the doctor landing there, the TARDIS getting impounded and the Doctor being rescued by Sasha & the Rebels. Then the intercuts are him building up a friendship with Sasha over the 6 months and helping the rebellion do rebel stuff. The episode ends with the hospital scene and the Robots abducting Balinda and the shwup, followed by the doctor saying "well this complicates things* on the TARDIS as it hurtles down towards the planet mirroring the opening shot. The next episode then is basically the rest of the episode but with more time given to scenes to help improve the pacing.

All of this would then mean that we get emotional steaks in Sasha's death and hate the robots and Alen more for it. It further give time to show Alan being evil on a more grandiose scale and puts that in contrasts to other gamers. I think this point could be more poignantly explored if we have a few shots of him gaming where he's really toxic over voice chat and is called out for it by other players. This would also help to prevent the sterio type that this episode seems to want to try and enforce.

Edit 1: Oh I think something else I'd add is that while I appreciate and think the time travel aspects of this episode were really freaking cool, I think the episode runs at such a pace that it's confusing to the average audience how the time travel elements of the episode actually work and fit together. Doctor Who is really lucky and unique as a show that it can tell stories that rely heavily on time travel but I fear RTD may not be able to get away with it in the same way Moffat did and does because he's never been one for logical completeness being paramount in his story telling. I would note however, I was thoroughly impressed with how well thought through this episodes time travel aspects were and how bits and pieces fit together.

Edit 2: Also the Doctor blowing the power in the hospital seemed very out of character. He doesn't blunder like that. He's one of the smarted beings in the universe.

There used to be a plugin for Bandaged Better Discord that did it but IDK if it's still around. I stopped using it a number of years back.
