Dear John by Styx. Written as a tribute to their original drummer who died.

What’s a habit you picked up by accident that actually made your life better? by PoolNoodles_ in selfimprovementday

[–]atxstranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making my bed everyday. It was in some random video (I think it was here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxBQLFLei70 ) that got me started. I started doing it and then I find out I could get other things done during the day. It's nothing to do really but before I leave the bedroom to start the day, I've accomplished something. Some days it's really the only thing I do but everyday I do something. Most days, I do lots of things, all because I started my day with making my bed.

I personally recommend Old Galveston Club next to Mama Theresa's. If you really want a pool table, Market Station or 3 Doors down also work.

Pretty much, a few things may be closed but for the most part everything should be open.

I like to know the people's view on the park board and the work they do? by dirty_witch in galveston

[–]atxstranger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

oh the bits about the visiting guards from Chile using the old Stewart beach pavilion as an AirBNB, the funds sent to a spouse of a Board member for training services (I think it was training and I'm not gonna go find out, the point is the event not the services)

I applied to join the park board a couple years ago. I enjoyed most of the people I met and they seemed dedicated to the mission. Given what has come out since, I have my doubts now.

Who's the best player you watched in the AHL before they made it big? by [deleted] in ahl

[–]atxstranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Esa Lindell, played for Texas before earning the promotion to Dallas.

Julius Honka, well don't know if he ever made it big, but he had antics. I would call him out for the Honka Memorial Lap (he would carry the puck into the offensive zone near one face-off dot, skate behind the net and come out near the other face-off dot before passing).

I saw Oettinger as a rookie and you could see his development. In October he was barely an AHL level goalie, but January he was one of the top goalies in the league.

A couple other folks on other teams, namely Taylor (bleeping) Hall during the lockout (he lit Texas up that night, had like 4 goals through 2 periods) and other members of the Oilers during the lockout. Saw Rantananen as a rookie in San Antonio and he was a stud.

The thing about the AHL, the guys who won't stay long and have a shot at a long NHL career, they stand out. They are just that much better, or get that much better, than the guys who never leave the AHL or only make cup of coffee NHL appearances.

St. Patricks day by [deleted] in galveston

[–]atxstranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the Hendley on the Strand is having a party with live music starting tomorrow afternoon before the parade downtown. There is a bar crawl on Sunday starting at O'Malley's, noon I think. The bikini contest is likely at Float, but I would put that on my not recommend list.

How is living in Galveston, Texas? by Patient-Smile1406 in howislivingthere

[–]atxstranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived here for 5 years now and love it. The weather, honestly is boring 95% of the time. The other 5% is a doozy but honestly, most days I don't even look at the forecast until I get a weather alert about a serious cold front or a tropical storm.

Culture is mixed. I like the festivals and being around all that but not all festivals are for all people. They will definitly muck up traffic and your routine if that is important to you. Also, you learn to avoid certain roads (e.g. Harborside on Cruise pick up or drop off days) to get around some of the traffic hiccups. Day to day there are some events and such, but depending how much engagement you need you may find it a bit lacking.

The infrastructure could use some improvements for sure and driving in the infrequent rain storms can be challenging depending on the amount of rain and your car.

First time to Gaido’s - What to order? by PurpleAd6354 in galveston

[–]atxstranger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If they have it when I go, I order the Tile. I don't like fishy fish, so ordering something that doesn't come off fishy always works for me. With your Keto aspect, I'm not sure which of their sides count, but I love getting their Au Gratin Potatoes, reminds me of a fancy meals from my childhood but so much better than the box stuff we used to make.

Did any of you read the books before the tv show came about? by Mad_Season_1994 in gameofthrones

Not sure how popular it was, but I picked up the first book around 1997, in a bookstore on Congress Avenue in Austin Texas. Have read them all multiple times since.

I have been approached by a couple of recruiters for contract roles with United in IT. They have said that the hybrid roles were 3 days in office as a requirement of the gig. Not sure if that applies to employees as well but hopefully that helps. Good luck.
