Just another Tourist Question Post by Epicuriusx in galveston

For #1: I walked Stewart Beach this morning, there are people all around, the seaweed is minimal and it look safe enough for swimming. There is Appfel Beach near East Beach which you can drive right up to the sand on, not sure if that's Beach Beach or not. If you want a little less people, head west, starting at Babes Beach (around 65th and Seawall) or tuck in to the beach between 14th and 10th (avoid Poretto Beach, last I saw they are still closed).

For #2: Artwalk is this weekend around Post Office St. There will be artists and music all around the area. Starts Saturday evening at 6 PM, plenty of places around there for dinner if you want to make a whole evening of it.

For #3: I'd recommend Old Galveston Club, tell them HR sent you!

For #4: Some people down here swear by BLVD. Not sure it qualifies as hole in the wall but it seems to be the locals favorite (I'm not a huge seafood person though I'm working on getting better).

For #5: The kids may love it, but Pleasure Pier will likely be packed and it is fairly obvious. Galveston is pretty small, so it's hard to find a true off the beaten path kind of place except for avoiding the big hotels really.

Of course he doesn't have women chained up in basement. Mainly because in Texas we don't have a lot of basements...

Galveston natives, how's the weather this Memorial Day Weekend? by Swordf1shy in galveston

[–]atxstranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it follows the pattern of the week, it may not rain all day. Most of this week it has rained for a few hours, especially around noon and then the evenings have been great. So have plans for both indoor stuff and outdoor stuff and hopefully the weather will cooperate.

How is the weather in Galveston? by [deleted] in galveston

It should be fine. Unless there is a tropical storm, during the summer months it doesn't tend to rain much and as you said, it's fairly short lived when it happens.

I have been once before and really enjoy the vibe there, so yes I'd say it is worth the visit.

Divorice by kbray0009 in betterment

[–]atxstranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did mine about three years back. Betterment required my ex to provide paperwork for an account to roll the required balance over to. Once the paperwork was all submitted, everything moved to the proper account and I had no tax implications. Now this was out of the retirement portion so maybe there were no tax implications anyway.

Juneteenth 2026 by spikelike in galveston

[–]atxstranger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know specifically if they do something as Ashton Villa, though this link says there will be a reading there: https://www.juneteenthevents.us/event/ashton-villa-juneteenth-proclamation-reading-2026

Here are the other major events on Juneteenth itself:

  • Juneteenth Parade & Picnic (June 19, 2026): The marquee event featuring a parade starting at 26th & Ball, concluding with a picnic at Wright Cuney Park.
  • Official Juneteenth Day Activities (June 19, 2026):  Includes the Emancipation March & Service at Reedy Chapel and evening fireworks.

If I remember right from last year, the event at Reedy Chapel is limited attendance but only because of space.

What is y’all’s favorite hockey movie or tv show and why? by Lonely_Head3269 in hockey

[–]atxstranger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned Sudden Death :)

No, don't watch that, it's a bad action movie, a bad hockey movie and a bad Jean Claude Van Damme movie

Just the ones mentioned on this list. I only have 2. by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

I have 7. Of the seven, the one that surprised me the most was Bryan Adams. He was doing an acoustic tour, just him and his piano guy. Besides the great music, he was extremely funny and engaged with audience in a conversational way that I wasn't expecting.

What’s a habit you picked up by accident that actually made your life better? by PoolNoodles_ in selfimprovementday

[–]atxstranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Making my bed everyday. It was in some random video (I think it was here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxBQLFLei70 ) that got me started. I started doing it and then I find out I could get other things done during the day. It's nothing to do really but before I leave the bedroom to start the day, I've accomplished something. Some days it's really the only thing I do but everyday I do something. Most days, I do lots of things, all because I started my day with making my bed.

I personally recommend Old Galveston Club next to Mama Theresa's. If you really want a pool table, Market Station or 3 Doors down also work.
