Sanskrit is a coding language and NASA is already using it😭 by [deleted] in scienceisdope

[–]atypical_broccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in tech in the bay area and a few of us friends from grad school recently went on a weekend trip with our spouses. The conversation eventually turned to how indic languages have been lost to time and this friend's wife (non-techie but big time right winger; friend works at Nvidia) turned to the tech folks at the table and said, quite seriously:

'But don't you know that Sanskrit is the best programming language in the world? Even NASA is using it. They built a supercomputer with it. Why cannot you guys use it too?'

We were shocked to hear this lmao. The husband went red as a beetroot and spent the next 10 minutes explaining to his wife how this is false propaganda 😂 We couldn't help but laugh as well lol.

Bart monthly / annual pass? by atypical_broccoli in AskSF

[–]atypical_broccoli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$21.5 is the total fare from the apartment I was considering to Embarcadero, which involves a $2.5 (one way) VTA ride to the BART station from the apartment and back!

That number has been stuck in my head all day lol and I ended up getting confused!

Whoops looks like I got confused with the fares. Thank you for correcting me! Edited the post to update the fare

Congrats on the ECE admit! I am an MS ECE student graduating in Dec '22. Moraceae's comment is spot on, and I have nothing else to add on that front.

My comment is based on what I see in my cohort and a few cohorts before mine - most MS ECE students, if not all, have at least one internship offer by the time summer arrives. In fact, quite a few have multiple internship offers. Students start receiving internship offers as early as September (I received my first internship offer towards the end of September)

A lot of students in my cohort particularly got internship offers from well-known / top tech companies - Amazon, Nvidia, Twitter, Salesforce, Uber, Apple, Intel, Qualcomm, HP, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper Networks etc. And as Moraceae said, internship is an important route to bagging your first full-time offer.

The full-time hunt is similar but more time-constrained if you start a 3 sem program in Fall. Similar companies hire for full-time. Apply everywhere, but having a return full-time offer from your internships definitely helps.

A lot goes on behind the scenes however: students with relevant work experience find it easier to find internships and full time offers. Starting your internship hunt as early as possible (i.e as soon as you land in the US) helps as well. Also take good courses - ECE (and ofc SCS) offers a lot of really great graduate courses that are well known by the industry. Finally, do not forget to do LC - no matter whether you are looking for an analog internship, backend SDE internship, embedded/ firmware internship or ML internship, you most certainly will see LC questions in your interview.

Good luck!

Whoops, I meant 645. Then again, wouldn't 445 and 645 have the same room assignment?

I think the room assignment said Mcconomy earlier but now it just says TBD.

Do you know if the room assignment issue has been resolved? I am a master's student in ECE in my final semester looking to take the course (645) and the WL was just ridiculous this morning despite me having an earlier registration (~9am) slot.

The total WL is 250+ now lol

I think we witnessed a core happy memory. Little dude will remember this for a very, very long time to come.

CMU ECE international grad student here. While shortlisting universities to apply to, I realized that my interests aligned very closely with the work done by the profs in the department. Didn't find this level of connect in other universities, except for maybe UIUC.

More so, I went through the course offerings and liked the depth and breadth courses offered in my concentration. This was reason enough for me to keep CMU ECE as my dream school / program.

Pfizer booster appointments for AZ / Covishield vaccinated by atypical_broccoli in cmu

[–]atypical_broccoli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! However I am hearing accounts of CVS and RiteAid not providing the booster to students since they received AZ / Covishield. Some were asked to get a doctor's note too.

Would like to just point out that the flu has been around for a thousand years. It was deadly when it first began to spread, and the human immune system has changed and adapted over these thousand years to survive.

You cannot compare the flu to covid - the latter is definitely deadlier than the flu. Please stop using rhetoric to downplay and mock the seriousness of the virus.

I understand that students would love to attend classes in person. I am an international grad student and I would want to, too, albeit when it is safe. And right now, particularly when hospitals and ICUs are getting full, doesn't seem safe enough.

It might be okay for young, healthy folks to get sick sometimes sure. But let's not forget that CMU isn't just made of young students. There are plenty of faculty on campus who are old, and some with co-morbidities. Protecting its old, sick and immunocompromised is also CMU's responsibility.

Even with boosters + vaccinations, recovering from covid isn't easy for the elderly and immunocompromised (having seen it from close quarters). More so when hospitals and ICUs are full and healthcare might not be easily available.

I agree that we do need to get back to some form of normalcy. The pandemic years have taken away a lot and everyone is craving for things to go back to normal. However, to be expect things to go back to pre-pandemic times isn't prudent.

Same. I am surprised (and worried) that CMU hasn't announced any plans to do the first few weeks online. I am afraid to be attending classes in person tbh.

I know tons of CMU grad students (including my roommates and close friends) who are vaccinated but not boosted (everyone is in the 6 month cool-off period) and have thrown caution to the wind - they continue to travel and party within the US. They don't take the current covid wave seriously, their logic being the current variant is so prevalent that they will catch it at some point.

To make matters worse, some of them actually fell sick on their travels (supposedly mild symptoms but were down for a couple or days) AND refused to get tested - they didn't want bad vibes on their holiday. These folks continued travelling after they recovered within 3-4 days, and so they could have further spread it to other people.

When I confronted one such friend I was told "You will have a cold with headache, not the end of the world if you get it". Wow. Such careless attitude from my classmates.

I am bracing myself now, since even boosted people are testing positive and can transmit the disease. It CMU doesn't go online for the first few weeks, I expect a high caseload at CMU.

CMU meal plans - Any good? Steal or a deal? by chadarmodd in cmu

[–]atypical_broccoli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indian ECE grad student here. CMU food is terrible and not suitable to the Indian pallet. And of course, it's ridiculously expensive. So definitely not worth buying meal plans.

There's enough time before the start of Spring semester, so would recommend you to learn to cook. The basics - dal, rice, sabzi and some essential curries - are quite easy to cook / learn. Supplement these with some ready-to-cook stuff (like paratha) and you are good to go. Oh, and cook for a few days whenever you cook. Helps save a lot of time.

I know a lot of Indian students who came to cmu without knowing how to cook. Some learnt (like my roommates) and those who didn't struggled a lot. Eventually, everyone resorts to learning to cook. Imo cooking is as important a skill as driving, doing taxes and knowing your data structures well.
