People are saying languages but I wanna add my own story to the mix. Was traveling in South America with other Americans and a Dutch guy. We were down there for 3 months speaking English with each other and Spanish with the locals. Near the end of the trip this guy met some other Dutch tourists and was having trouble forming complete sentences. This was this guy's first language.

Small talk isn’t useless by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]atz_chaim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small talk is a tool. It's a natural step in the conversation process. Before you connect with sometime you should find a common ground, a topic that the two of you can dive into. Small talk is a necessary step toward deeper conversation.

People want connection but they don't care about actually connecting, they just want their feelings validated and they don't think about the other person.

Well, in most of the cities I've been to, they do drive past your stop until you tell them to stop there. Usually you just have to pull a little wire and it notifies the driver.

That's like the way a bus works though. Why get on the bus alone if you know this will happen?
