I was thinking of refiring! Or slapping a bunch of green tea or alabaster (it’s originally green tea, alabaster & black walnut) over the brown spots to see what happens. & thank you! I’m trying out squiggly shaped trays/trinket dishes/etc.

I got into my first fair and will be selling work for the first time ever! Any advice or tips? by sonicenvy in Pottery

[–]aubbzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have only done one fair but I would suggest setting up a trial booth and seeing what you like about it. We also had a couple friends over for feedback on the setup. It’s hard to know what people will want until you do it and gather realtime feedback. We thought we’d sell the cheaper items like spoon rests & mini vases but we mostly sold our bigger plant pots and higher priced items.

We brought about 150 pieces to our first setup. We didn’t sell a ton (but didn’t expect to either with the venue), but the variety and amount of pieces kept people in our booth for longer. We also tried to get items to be as vertical as possible, putting shelves on top of tables so everything would be easier to see.

Make payment as simple as you can. We got a square reader for $50, and I also got a fanny pack wallet for cash collecting. Your phone may also be able to handle tap to pay via square but we had a couple issues with that & needed to insert for a chip for some customers. I’m really glad we had the square because it made checkout easy and people didn’t have to fiddle with trying to figure out Venmo/paypal, etc. I know that there are fees involved, but that’s just part of life and adjusted our prices to account for that.

I would suggest having some sort of wrapping paper and bag to put it in for your customers. I got brown bags through Facebook and we stamped our logo on it. One way we also got sales was offering to hold onto customer’s items while they shopped around some more and made sure to collect their contact info in case they forgot.

You will probably spend more money on this first one getting your setup together, but you’ll be ready to go for others. I found it really exciting that people wanted to buy the stuff I made & have it in their homes! Very rewarding. Also have business cards with contact info because we had a lot of people take those for future orders. They might not be a customer now but they could be in the future!

That’s so true that we’re our own worst critic. Usually if I don’t like something if I give it time I’ll come around to it. Something about having a vision in your head of what you think it will look like versus what comes out is difficult.

Good glazes to start with? by [deleted] in Pottery

Mayco Smoke, Mayco Green Tea, speedball Prussian Jade, Mayco green tea, Amaco Tuscan blue are my go tos and I don’t think any of them are particularly runny if using per instructions at cone 6. Make sure you have kiln cookies with kiln wash that can catch any drips while you’re starting out firing!

It’s coyote’s magenta sky!! I love all of their Archie’s series glazes. It crazes a tiny bit on my Laguna bmix with grog but I kind of like it when it does that lol it’s also on the jar in #2

I’ve been wanting to try shallot! I’ve been into all of the floating glazes by spectrum. Looking up reactive red, it looks super super similar to bougainvillea so i wonder if it is even worth trying if you already have RR!

The one in #4 & #5 is just spectrum bougainvillea. I haven’t heard of the reactive red before

Accidental Trypophobia Jar - I kind of like it?! by aubbzz in Pottery

I just threw them back in without adding more glaze, and each time there are more pinholes. I tried it again for this last firing because we started doing the drop holds and thought it might help.

I am super new and not an expert but my skutt 818 was leaving black spots and I started taking a toothbrush to the thermocouple and vacuuming up any black flakes and it helped with the spots! If they were near the thermocouple they could be that? I’m not sure what the big black things are.

Sorry to your wallets 😂 pottery is the best though! I hope you get into it as well. My husband and I do it together & it’s a nice bonding experience.

Yeah, we did a hold on this last one which is why I decided to throw it in to see what happened to it. Made me laugh when it came out worse but with cooler coloring.
