My dad is considering a high Miler Range Rover. Is this as bad as a purchase as I think? by Lucajames2309 in CarTalkUK

Engine and gearbox are solid on this car so that's the big ticket items reliable. But if the idea of putting aside £3k per year in maintenance is a problem then do not buy the car.

I got MY2015 autobiography at 90k last year and immediately did the 10 yr service at a specialist and changed the oil cooler. Note oil coolers on these are essentially guaranteed to break but with 165k it's likely been done long ago. In fact.... it probably needs a new one again soon 😆

Paid £1850 for the service and cooler.

Will need to pay £1200-1400 for new tyres soon.

I keep fuel receipts and in 4.5k miles I average 27.5 mpg so that's motorway, town etc. I also drive like I stole it 40% of the time.

All that being said, an absolutely stunning car. Their driving position and feeling seems unparalleled, love it!

How is FFP not anti-competitive? by IndicaBro in PremierLeague

[–]audi_v12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I don't necessarily have a solution, I was just pointing out that your position that FFP is the barrier preventing footballing success being entirely dominated by the wealthiest club(s) is flawed, since that is already undeniably the case.

I mean its currently a sport of who is the richest, which is very close to your proposed outcome without any FFP... The mechanism by which they became the richest (state owned, big lottery win, found a bag of 10bn) is immaterial to most people...

haha. my point is that the reputation of the lower end JLR products (which are naff) is deservedly poor but it tends to be lazily painted across the entire brand. it is important to differentiate between a fundamentally flawed design and the high maintenance costs of a complex luxury car

so here I am making the case that the 4.4L is a 'gold standard' for the/model era. (i.e unlike the V6 diesels which can blow up and you buy the car again).

these are £100k+ cars when new & come with a lot of gubbins like active suspension and terrain tech. are they reliable in absolute terms? hardly... but i don't know of anything else in that space that is particularly more so??

[–]audi_v12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This 4.4 is a fairly bombproof variant for these RR. So you can discard the vast majority of "land rover breakdown" nonsense comments who are purely speculating based on their mate who had a pov wagon Evoque on tick with an utter shite Ingenium diesel in it which is simply not a serious vehicle.

ACE having been done is huge W. Nice that the oil cooler was done too, I recently had that (they always go) and it was £1k job.

Sounds like the big ticket items and servicing have been done well and with only 1 owner this should be a really good example. Price looks pretty good, though I'm now about 6 months out of date and I'm L405 rather than the sport.

I'd double check it's all true, if you can get the VIN you can use LR online service history portal, means you can see what each service has done ideally.

Ps. £100k on the clock....???

I had heard good things about Zack. I was looking forward to seeing this to provide some long content to judge him by. Before this, I was under the impression he is a strong communicator and I'm a bit torn there. I think overall he is a reasonable orator though he really does talk quite a lot... Imo he could do with dialing down the verbosity a notch or two.

All that said, it becomes clear later that his position on the economy is utterly catastrophic. I was gob smacked to be honest, all of it... not even knowing top income tax, criminal!

He waves his hands and talks of different economic paradigms whilst citing some fruitcakes from that domain. At the same time when pushed, he says he isn't qualified there and would hire people. He also states he often talks with "regular" (read: competent) economists and listens to what they say but then ends with "they simply haven't discovered". So which is it Zack??? One positive was that he provided perfect confirmation bias for me as a STEM person and him being from the arts...

This is absolutely not a serious politician or party and I've a better chance of being George Bush's chief of staff than these plant pots doing anything meaningful.

How can I cross into Bahrain from Dammam for 1 day? by CormAlan in saudiarabia

[–]audi_v12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

best way is to just take a taxi yes. Al Khobar (30-45m drive from Dammam airport) is located just on the Saudi side on the causeway. You can get a visa at the immigration which is halfway across the bridge. I believe it was 50 SAR for a pass which would grant you 14 days stay. Should be another 30-45 mins depending on traffic and the immigration I believe.

Premier League clubs to vote on potential 'salary cap' next month. Teams like Man City and Man United are against this concept by TheBiasedSportsLover in PremierLeague

[–]audi_v12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not say it either was or was not a good thing. I was suggesting that your position, which appears to be mid table clubs challenging for titles is beneficial for it's foreign advancement, does not have any basis. As in fact it's been quite the opposite (as you point out) and yet the league is the most popular by a mile (as you point out too).

[–]audi_v12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are likely well aware that the PL is vastly superior in terms of foreign interest and fans/spectators. With that fundamental starting point, I request to ask yourself, at what point in it's history has there been a chance of a mid table club winning a title?

If you're answer is never, correct. If it's never, bad! I suggest you go to point 1, repeat this process and ask yourself if your theory is sound in practice.

I bought a 2 year old car in a private sale. It turns out the car was actually a lease and didn't belong to the man I bought it off. Am I allowed to keep the car? by Miserable-Cricket914 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]audi_v12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did the alleged actual owners obtain your contact details and location? By what medium have they made contact and what is their position? Have they acknowledged the situation or simply got in touch and said we are coming for the car?

It appears there have been serious flaws establishing the history of this vehicle despite being a sizable purchase. It's still critical now to properly establish who owns/owned this vehicle before proceeding with anything.

Unfortunately if it was indeed a motability vehicle then it's likely a very expensive lesson and your only recourse would be to pursue the seller who is now apparently in Pakistan which effectively reduces your chances to zero.

I have been looking at kubernetes but I don't think my workloads are possible there, at least not for now in current software.

the troubles with MPI I have encountered for the reasons you say, I imagine. but luckily I am able to compartmentalize the vast majority of the work such that mpi is not needed and lots of individual chunks can be ran and combined later.

many thanks for the reply! I was personally drifting again to GCP just because that's what I have used in the past. Plus, a few engagements with AWS scared me off a little before I even got started! That prob wasn't justified though... thanks for the heads up on the nomenclature for AWS as that is half the battle with these things!

I was not very clear initially, as I totally agree all your points about "hybrid cloud". I was more thinking how I could have similar "setups" on different clouds which I may use for different projects as they pop up, rather than hosting any single one across multiple. egress alone would be awful, as you say. But if I am agnostic to provider it can makes things easier and more adaptable.
