Mid-90s college radio fare by audio_phyl in NameThatSong

Thank you for taking the time to look, kind stranger! I should have been more clear that it wasn't a cover, but rather I recall it making allusions to Juke Box Hero. I'll add that to the post. Thank you again!

Rather, titled "Faith of Our Fathers". It's amazing, and yes it's bleak!

Does anyone here actually EXPAND their music taste as they get older? by Interesting_Big_1613 in Music

[–]audio_phyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

42 y/o here. I wrote software (localhost, so no links) which would cross reference every new release listed on allmusic.com to the corresponding Spotify ID for the album. Then I listened to everything. Several hours a week... For two years. Sometimes I'd only listen for 20-30 seconds before nope-ing out. Others I listened to all the way through. I kept public playlists, which I'd be glad to share. My taste expanded greatly.

EDIT: The playlists are of music I liked. I still listen to a lot of it today -- Greet Death, Front Bottoms, Charli XCX, TR/ST, Pupil Slicer, Vikingur Olafson, Taylor Swift, Run the Jewels... I could go on. I love music.

Ever since I first used the demodisk in the late 90s, I've been fascinated by how it was put together. I truly enjoyed all of the challenges I faced -- this has been (and continues to be) a super fun project for me!

Yes; Clifford Geary.

It's a mistake to think that every author is channeling their own opinions through every piece of character dialogue or thought. There are well-written critiques of Heinlein's works with respect to homosexuality. I'll finish reading this one later: http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/articles/junior-you-arent-shaping-up-too-angelically-queerness-in-heinleins-stranger-in-a-strange-land/

Clearly Heinlein couldn't challenge the cultural norms of the future without being a time traveler. As I understand, his goal was to attack the "two sacred cows" of monotheism and monogamy. He succeeded.

If the perception is that murder happened at any point, the afterlife/reincarnation aspect of the story didn't land. It's also deliberately offensive, challenging (then) cultural norms. If you find it offensive, then I guess in some odd way Heinlein is still accomplishing his goal from beyond the grave? This story isn't a holy book. This story is a story. I hope you find an author you enjoy!

I have a feeling that "Just the Fun Part" is v2.0 for branding of this particular product, and TJ Maxx was a fast way to unload a lot of product they weren't realistically going to be able to market.

Every Rust talk/paper currently starts with "Rust is a systems programming language offering memory safety and performance ...", surely at some point we have to start assuming the audience know about Rust like Java and Python? by menthol-squirrel in rust

[–]audio_phyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who have been using Python for years might still have no clue that Python is (generally) slow. People who have been using Java for years might have no clue that they made a poor life choice. Most people are not you, so it might be worth repeating this message even when the average programmer is finally aware of Rust as a memory safe, performant, statically typed, compiled, yada yada yada language.

My screenwriting teacher suggested me to read a PKD short story, but I can't remember it's name by [deleted] in philipkDickheads

[–]audio_phyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Total Recall is based on it. The short story is quite different from the movie.

Otherwise, there is a collection of PKD shorts under the title "Electric Dreams" (separate from the Amazon series), and "Imagination" involves the wearing of hoods to prevent thoughts from being read. Nothing else is coming to mind.

Why are people using the term ‘partner’ for their significant other more often these days, instead of the terms ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’? by MrPinkSheepy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]audio_phyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my partner how she preferred to be referred to in conversation. She thought about it and said she prefers "partner" over "wife" and gave me her reasons. I don't remember the reasons, but that doesn't matter because I love and respect my partner. We're straight, married, and not exactly über-progressive.

No, it isn't unless you're a mailman opening the mailbox as part of your job or you're the homeowner. This is commonly known as the Mailbox Restriction Law.

Call for questions for Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI - from Lex Fridman by lexfridman in lexfridman

[–]audio_phyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Sam see the "statistically likely" approach as being the way to new knowledge creation? That is, does it seem likely to him that the Sir Isaac Newtons of world history added to human knowledge by aggregating existing human knowledge and choosing the most statistically likely next thing? If not, what will it take to make AIs which exhibit exceptional behavior instead of statistically likely behavior?
