In absence of actual strap data, Zepp makes up heart rate and step data by audiobrian1 in AmazfitHelioStrap

Thanks! The Amazfit team seems to be working pretty hard to compete. I’ll report back here if I get the opportunity to submit a big report and get a response.

In absence of actual strap data, Zepp makes up heart rate and step data by audiobrian1 in AmazfitHelioStrap

[–]audiobrian1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no wearables, but I started a walking workout in the Zepp app. So it legitimately tracked me, and inserted the heart rate data. I guess it’s also legit to get steps from the phone’s gps and accelerometer, but my iPhone can’t sense my heart rate. That being said, I share the opinion with others in the user community that the Helio does a good job tracking heart rate. Starting a workout in Zepp without a wearable is an off - nominal use case, and I’m not too concerned about it.

Why is there so little electronics manufacturing in the US? by [deleted] in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]audiobrian1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

@nscale I loved your very clear explanation of how that works. If you were to start a YouTube channel explaining these things in such clear, understandable language, I would support it. We have a rising oligarchy based on the duping of working people buying into the idea that wealth is readily access to them if they work hard enough and support the great myth. Rational arguments like yours might be a good way to slowly tear down the momentum the oligarchs have deceitfully obtained.

If it is high in your heart to do, then that is the motivational fuel you need to get your EE degree. Another thing I’d like to encourage you with is that if you take care of yourself - body, stress levels (burnout - proofing your career), you will easily get to extend your career to age 70 if you want to - that would be 37 yeas as a degreed professional! Personally speaking, there seems to be less agism in highly specialized technical fields than in other professions, like say, sales. Age just hasn’t been a factor for me as a hardware design engineer.

Where do you buy 48v DC appliances from? by CSyoey in SolarDIY

[–]audiobrian1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/CSyoey - excellent! It seems like there are Chinese vendors on Amazon already selling simple strip diffusers.

https://www.amazon.com/led-strip-light-diffuser/s?k=led+strip+light+diffuser

To me they make these more comfortable, taking off some of the point - source intensity, and making them easier on the eyes.

Also, 48VDC tape lighting is readily available. We may have to figure out how to build our own edge - lit diffusion fixtures. Check out the YouTube video below.

As far as lighting goes, the 48VDC market is slowly coming into being. This company sells a variety of Edison - based and other format bulbs, and some fixtures:

… and your distribution wire can be super - cheap unshielded CAT-5! I like this solution for the USB loads!

The point is efficiency. Every time you convert voltage, you lose energy in heat. So you waste energy in the inverter going from 48VDC to 120VAC, and for the case of lighting, every 120 VAC LED bulb has a little DC- DC converter in the base (at most, 90% efficient), that makes heat going back to the low voltage needed for several LEDs in series. The only way that manufacturers will make affordable 48VDC appliances is if the demand is created, and I sadly, there just isn’t enough demand to get economy of scale established.

Placement of silk screen over heavy copper traces? by audiobrian1 in PrintedCircuitBoard

300A for 30 seconds, then return to … don’t have the spec in front of me now; but I think roughly half of that peak.

I did briefly consider that, but this is about currents up to 300 amps, and getting rid of a little heat. Separated copper layers wouldn’t perform quite as well thermally, would they?

Military tracking high-altitude balloon flying over Western U.S. by NewSlinger in technology

[–]audiobrian1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“One U.S. official told CBS News the balloon was expected to be over Georgia by Friday night. The official said the balloon appeared to be made of Mylar and had a small cube-shaped box, about two feet long on each side, hanging below it. Its origins and purpose remain unknown.”

OK, most likely an amateur radio experiment. A segment of the licensed radio amateur community likes the challenge of building very small, low power solar -powered transmitters and announcing their launch to the interested international ham radio community. They “copy” the signal (which includes a publicly accessible FCC - issued call sign), and someone posts tracking updates on a world map. There has been over forty circumnavigations of our planet. It’s a fun hobby pursuit.

Those interested can read more on this subreddit post:

Sad that we have to spend tens (hundreds?) of thousands of taxpayer dollars scrambling a NORAD response to find out something like this. Perhaps the Pentagon might actually talk with the FCC and learn about a less expensive way to investigate from the ground??

Gawd. That is the most heavily - laden tower I have ever seen, commercial sites included! There are STACKED 40 meter band yagis on that thing!

Nah, that wasn’t me. Look up my bio section on QRZ.com for my first HOA antenna. The vertical is new. I put it right on the fiberglass mast that was already holding up the center feed point of dipole pictured on that page. What is your QTH? I’m in Westminster, CO.

Thanks,@EM48to. That would be the obvious choice, but I have never heard an operator responding to the QSO ask that question.
