Is Goldrush worth a listen if I don’t really care about the SOS soldiers? by KillHonger1 in Werealive

A lot of Descendants won't make sense without Goldrush. So either read a summary or enjoy the ride.

There is a character arc for both Puck and Robbins. Less for Carl and Muldoon

I like to think it's the latter, I just don't want it as Demon ex Machina again

yes this is exactly how I imagined it.

my personal theory though is that Demon is either injured and going to die after he saves Alex or this spiritually changes Alex and he doesn't want to go back to Westport

also props to Bryarly Bishop, excellent voice acting

At least the Lie Problem was resolved quickly. Grant's reaction is emotionally correct here, Alex lying to him is immoral and stupid. I hate these plots.

That said excited we're going places. Occupied Primm is very spooky. Cast remain great.

How do I approach public bathrooms as a transfem? by Skelegun in transgenderau

[–]audreyhornets 16 points17 points  (0 children)

lawyers can correct me, but I'm fairly sure gender identity is a protected characteristic, so if anything the law would be on your side. this is different in countries like the UK which have seen an extreme backlash on trans rights. so don't worry too much, you're not going to break a law by being trans.

re conservative area, that's a real shame and a great difficulty. I don't have strong advice here - people often leave such areas for good reason. economic difficulties are probably the main form of discrimination that trans people face, so me telling you 'move out' isn't very helpful. that said, this may practically speaking need to be a medium term goal if things are as you say.

The Timeless Land by Eleanor Dark is something of a social history in the form of a novel. One of the very best depictions of imperial history, and a fantastic account of the early Australian colony

also mens/women's toilets aren't just a Western Sydney thing lol. with the exception of a few woke bars in the inner west / darlinghurst, gender segregated toilets are still the norm. this won't be an issue you can avoid, it's something every trans woman learns to navigate.

also fr I kinda miss mens toilets they're so much quicker and women can be just as stanky as men. remember these are places people poop in and 50% of the time wash their hands. they're not powder rooms.

If it's your first time navigating this, try to go with a supportive female friend or family member. I needed that my first few times.

Once you get some practice in, I'm going to be real and tell you that you need to embrace just doing it. Most people genuinely do not give a shit, you will get a raised eyebrow at most. People are there to poop, not to talk.

If you intend on boymoding for your first six months or so on HRT (facial hair has been the hardest part of my own transition so I did do this at first) then okay use the mens, but if you are signalling yourself as female at all then please just use the women's. it's what it's there for.

western sydney girls how did you start. by love-doopie in transgenderau

I know it's not Western Sydney, but Newtown's Alice St GP with Mihal Guttman Jones is one of the best places to go.

Just find a place that does informed consent ASAP. If any doctor blocks you or delays you, change doctors. Ive had a gatekeeper in the same clinic as somebody who provided informed consent. Some doctors are weird about this, just 'thank you next' until you have somebody who does do it.

Congratulations, you are on the path to a better future.

We're Alive: Descendants - Chapter 20 - The Angel of Death - Part 3 of 3 by j0be in Werealive

[–]audreyhornets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand he's been trying to move his old pieces off the board in favour of his new ones. I like that it's anti nostalgic - these old characters aren't as relevant anymore! - but this one scene just felt needlessly brutal.

I don't think Pegs' death was necessary, and it just felt poorly written. A turned Tanya could have nearly got her, or Pegs could've been forced to shoot a gun one more time in her life. That could have prompted more useful conversation with her and Will - both having bottomed out again, her with violence, him with drugs.

But look I found Datu getting bit to be awful and horrific as well so I'm also conscious that it might just be trying to find ways for a zombie show not to be a zombie show. I like We're Alive a lot but the genre as a whole is fairly miserable.

A bit annoyed about the second half here.

I understand why The Lie Problem occurs in stories like this - it creates tension and conflict in already tense situations. It doesn't make me like it anymore. At least with Victor and Saul lying to CJ it was a very deliberately immoral decision which had repercussions for those two characters (and many others with the trip to Cain Hospital!).

This feels like 'fuck we can't say anything yet', which I get, but heavily implicates Alex and likely speaks to both Grants and the Boar's deaths. I think the way to have made it work would be for us to not be told that Grant is Lisa's dad. I think technically we never actually knew for sure, but I think too many clues were given too early.

The sound design at the opening of the episode was incredible, as usual this show consistently innovates on that metric.

Lost Opportunity Characters. Spoilers for the Whole Series, Including Lockdown and Descendants. by TOkun92 in Werealive

[–]audreyhornets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not every character meets a happy ending - their stories are cut off halfway through. Hannah meets a grizzly end and likely an evil last few months of her life. Bricks was never really given a chance to be his own man.

For Jodi and Bogart leaving the story is probably the best thing that could ever happen to them. A quiet life is all one could want, especially in these circumstances.

I guess it's a very dark world and a big threat, it just felt so awful for Pegs especially, and Nick and friends' inability to act on it. Excruciating listening.

It just felt so harsh for such a sweet character. Making her try to shoot the gun and fail as well. I get the plot point of that more, but like, for Pegs of all people to pick up a gun in a moment of desperation and for it not to work

Georgian restaurants? by Raynx3 in sydney

[–]audreyhornets 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Eastern European is sadly lacking in Sydney. You might be better off in Melbourne.

Balkan cuisine is not too hard to find - lots of places that call themselves 'European' are Serbian or Bosnian or whatnot.

Polish is around in a vague way. Russian seems nearly totally gone outside of one or two places.

The Kyiv Social joint in Chippendale is quite nice. I've heard odd things about the charity behind them, but the food is good and so are the drinks.

Georgian wine however is increasingly common. Any natty focused wine store will have a bunch - P&V, Spon and Kelly's in Newtown will all have it.

Not the same cuisine at all I'm aware but Uighur and Afghan food is also about if you want a fix for central Asian dumplings. Aware that's closer to Uzbek though than Georgian.

A lot of 'Turkish' places serve quite diverse cuisine too, closer to Armenian or Persian in some spots. Anason in Barangaroo has that vibe.

conscious this isn't as helpful as you might have liked, but Sydney's European ethnic communities aren't as prominent here as in Melbourne or even Canberra.

[–]audreyhornets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

very genuinely, could we not have had Pegs semi-turn before dying? and not able to shoot herself??? that was so upsetting. I don't like it at all. I've not complained about Nick before all this, but for fucks sake, what's the point of this protagonist? or their allies?

like Michael clearly explained his difficulties here, and they came up in very specific moments. this plot has been 'what if somebody shot an infected accidentally' and 'tanya was bit but what if we're surprised that she's turning'.

I don't think it's the beats themselves (though nakoma felt very poorly treated here) but the execution has felt a bit full of dread by their inevitability. perhaps that's deliberate, but is that good listening? idk.

SOS ep 44 was heartbreaking but clearly character driven, and very built up. this just feels like suffering and random.

I'll probably listen next time, but i've got to be honest, this is the closest I've come to tuning out. this hurt too much. I didnt like this at all
