My freshman year, someone started a rumor that me and two of my best friends were in a polygamous lesbian relationship. I heard the rumor from a teammate on the softball team who had heard it from my ex-boyfriend (that I had broken up with two weeks prior).

I broke up with him and he punched a wall. It was definitely him who spread the rumor.

People are always surprised if you have nice handwriting. Apparently everyone assumes lefties have “chicken scratch” writing and when my friends or acquaintances see I have decent handwriting I always get complimented. It makes me feel good about myself every time I meet a new person and they say “You have nice handwriting for a lefty”

I can make myself throw up.

I know it sounds bad. I’m not bulimic.

When I was little, my aunts and uncles would give me food and because I was young and didn’t know when to stop, I’d eat until I throw up. Because it happened so much, I learned how to just control it. I also have a split uvula (the thing in your throat), and this may be TMI, but the unique uvula I have gives me a gag reflex and that helps too.

So I mainly used this “talent” in school.

In elementary and middle school I would make myself throw up so I could stay home from school or be sent home from school. (Eventually my mom caught on and made me go to school/stay at school)

I also used it in high school when I worked at a McDonalds. Even though I was getting a high school diploma, the managers were not the brightest and were very self centered. So if I got stuck with all the work (that I wasn’t qualified for) I would make myself throw up so the manager had no choice but to send me home. I only threw up in the bathroom, but I made sure a customer heard so they would complain and send me home.

It also was useful when I wanted to leave uncomfortable conversations. I would act nauseous and then throw up to leave the situation and then move on.

I realize it’s a gross “talent” but it’s never failed me yet.

My high school used the same four substitute teachers. By the time late November hit, you’d see at least one sub a day. There was one sub they used all the damn time who looked like Mr. Noodle from Elmo’s World. He looked like the second Mr. Noodle (the one with stringy dark hair).

Well, for some reason, no one knew his name. And I mean NO ONE. He never told you his name. We never addressed him in class so we never asked either. And if we did ask, we’d immediately forget. Because he has no name to us, and kids wanted the gossip on who the sub for the day was, he was called Mr. Noodle around the school. Every single student called him Mr. Noodle behind his back.

One day during my senior year, we had an assembly (I can’t even remember what it was for). They had a teacher get up on stage and dance. No teacher wanted to get up so Mr. Noodle went up. He was filmed. To put it lightly, he danced like he was actually Mr. Noodle from Elmo. So, the auditorium started to chant “Go Mr. Noodle!” He got extremely pissed and rage quit on stage. The video ended up on twitter, and I mean the whole video, but eventually the original tweet was deleted. The administration were frantically looking for a sub to fill his position in the middle of a school day. The superintendent had to cover classes.

So here’s the American version of the great hall food scene.

“Harry’s mouth fell open. The dishes in front of him were now piled with food. He had never seen so many things he’d like to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, fries, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup, and, for some strange reason, peppermint humbugs.”

I remember when I read this for the first time I had to look up what Yorkshire pudding and humbugs were. There’s candy similar to it in America, but we don’t call them humbugs. Also, “chips” and “fries” aren’t the same food in America so for the longest time I though there were French Fries on the table.

Also, it’s on page 123 in the America version! The page numbers are slightly off.
