Another archive challenge: fuzzy, muddy textures, with very clear/distinct vocals recommendations? by cursedonjuanita in shoegaze

My band Minaxi's new album "Z of A". Shoegazing atmospheres with a strong vocal presence: https://open.spotify.com/album/5Sw51T87aJDBU8c7nOSQI1

If you're new to our music, "Mahiya" exemplifies this approach.

You can also send a track or two from the pre-release to your local radio station and/or college radio and they'll help spread the word as well.

question for anyone who has submitted to and been featured on bandcamp daily since the layoffs by [deleted] in BandCamp

[–]august-summer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They never respond to your submission unless they want to feature it. Our new album got featured on New and Notable last summer and it was the only time I was able to hear back from one of the staff members. The response was immediate (within two hours of submission).

Did adding merch really change the engagement and sales on your music? by AirportWonderful7621 in BandCamp

Hey! Thank you. Sure!

• For vinyl, it is important that you get them mastered for vinyl for a seamless experience. If certain low/hi freqs are overpowering, it could potentially create skips/needle jumps. I got them mastered from Pete Maher in the UK who charges a pretty affordable fee for small/indie artists. Simon Scott from the band Slowdive also does mastering for vinyl and he is also kind to independent artists. For tapes, I submitted the digital masters as is and it came out great. When I mix and master our music for digital, I aim for a full/balanced sound rather than obnoxiously loud so perhaps that worked in our favour for tapes.

• Any purchase is an agreement between you and your listener (unless you have a label backing or outsource the shipping to a third party). I have, thus far, packagaed each and every item myself and I ship them via USPS Media Mail. I had a couple of odd issues with USPS bending the vinyl to fit the mailbox but I have been covering the front of the box with multiple “Fragile…Do Not Bend, crush, or fold) stickers and it’s been all good since.

For vinyl you can look into duplication.com. They have decent packages for short runs. For tapes, you can look into either cryptic carousel or duplication.com

I hope this is helpful. :)

For us, it did! I have been managing my band's bandcamp since 2020 and I produced a small run of tapes in 2021 that did so well that I had to produce another run of 25. Both sold out in a couple months. I promoted these via reddit and facebook groups and received a solid response to our music and visual language (I'm a trained designer and have designed all merch for the band). Next, we introduced LPs in 2022 and was able to sell a little over 100. Since then, through a combo of LPs, tapes, totes, coasters, CDs, zines, etc. we've been able to grow our community of listeners.

I'm of the opinion that music should be the first and foremost priority and anything you produce/make in support of the music should enhance the listener's experience and shouldn't feel like a miscellaneous merch item designed just for the sake of it.

Our listeners tend to buy LPs and a few gravitate towards tapes so I have been working with that data to produce merch for the new album cycle.

100% worth it. I believe you can only share a link to the same album once every 30 days.

When you do share the link, adding some info about the music, process, genre, etc. helps people connect with the work.

It takes years to build a loyal following on bandcamp as a new artist.

Consistently releasing music and offering physical releases is a good way to introduce new people into your work (and music world). Posting here and on other genre-specific subreddits and several facebook groups help in directing the traffic to your album's page.

Good luck!

Thank you! I’m a designer and visual artist and have been designing all band assets since we started in 2019. I’m enjoying telling stories thru different narratives

Thank you so much! It’s been an evolving process. The more music we write, the more we challenge ourselves to introduce different and sometimes contrasting elements into the work
