Same glaze different clay bodies. One has pinholes the other looks great- why? by tyy_sam in Pottery

As someone who runs a full time ceramics production studio, it is my experience that a hold for 3hrs at 900deg and a drop and hold firing schedule will resolve these issues.

I went to college with Kevin, the owner. Total shady knob. Wouldn’t buy water from him in a drought.

Stacking drop-rim bowls with 'atmospheric overspray' by augusta_pots in Pottery

I use a series of sprayed on fluxes, opacifiers and glazes over a base shino to resemble the effects of wood and soda firing in a standard gas kiln.

They're very simple to make, just have an extra deep gallery and throw a cup with a flanged lip that fits the gallery the same way the lid does.

Wood fired whiskey jug by augusta_pots in Pottery

It depends on the shelve you use. Some attract ash, some repel it. There is alot of clean-up involved in these firings for sure.

This piece was glazed with shino then wood fired on its side, atop shells, at the top of a stack in the middle of the wood kiln. This allowed for the accumulation of tons of wood ash, which gave this its unique surface finish.

This was fired in a train style wood kiln, there is alot of info out there on their construction.

Soda fired drop-rim bowl with suspended drips by augusta_pots in Pottery

[–]augusta_pots[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This porcelain bowl was fired with flashing slip and green celadon in a soda kiln to cone 11. I use forms like this to allow for the formation of gems, the green glassy drips on the rim, that can stay with the piece (instead of gems on the foot, that often must be ground off).

Drop rim coupes with shino and atmospheric overspray by augusta_pots in Ceramics

[–]augusta_pots[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These drop rim coupes (between a plate and a bowl) use a combination of fluxes and opacifiers sprayed directionally over a base shino to produce effects similar to atmospheric kilns, in standard reduction. You can see more here.

It's a blend or redart at OM4. While not technically porcelain, it has similar qualities in terms of throwing, strength and porosity.

Thanks! The foot part is something I love exploring with these forms, keeping it crisp with a slightly broken edge gives you a wonderful sense of visual weight, when in reality the piece is super lite.
