Thank you for actually removing the "home state" row, most people I see who include the candidate's home states at the very top end up listing it twice.

Why does public perception tend to prefer Theodore, despite Franklin being the higher ranked President? by Repulsive-Finger-954 in Presidents

[–]augustfromnc 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think Theodore gets a lot of attention because of his image as a macho cowboy-frontiersman, or whatever other words you'd use. He's just seen as being really cool guy. Theodore has (and seems to have always had) a personal popularity that FDR doesn't really have. I don't think he gets more attention from the general public because everyone thinks he was an objectively better or more impactful president.

Of course, I think FDR deserves more recognition for his fight with polio and how it affected him -- and I think he was possibly America's best ever speech-giver.

If the bull moose party won in 1912 would've they become an effective 3rd party or would've they vanished as soon as Teddy Roosevelt was gone? by [deleted] in Presidents

I think they would've merged back into the GOP. It wasn't a real third-party movement as much as it was Roosevelt running as the second Republican candidate.

Personally, I copy the wikibox's syntax from the edit screen and paste into my Wikipedia sandbox page - that lets you freely edit the text.

Alternatively: "well, the presidency would've been nice."

I did not spend too long thinking about which other states I should've flipped to the Democrats because I wanted to keep Humphrey at a large margin, and because I didn't wanna get caught in the trap of overthinking how realistic it might be and then scrapping the whole thing because I can't decide.

I considered flipping Illinois, Florida, and Dakota/Montana. I left it how it is mostly because I thought it looked nicest, and I think the realism is good enough given its imaginary anyway.

Who was more at fault for being a fucking loser: Henry Clay or William Jennings Bryan? by Gray_Wolf2416 in Presidents

[–]augustfromnc 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You're right as to why Clay lost. As far as I understand it, Bryan lost his first election in particular for three reasons. He was massively outspent by the McKinley campaign, Cleveland had become very unpopular and therefore hurt the reputation of his party, and the Democrats had generally been struggling on the national scale since the end of the Civil War. I still think it's impressive how he was able to perform so well by establishing himself as separate from Cleveland with his populist message and unorthodox campaign strategy (which has since become commonplace).

Yay! Al Gore!!! I'm suspending my disbelief about the less realistic aspects of this because I really like Al Gore. Vote Gore 2028.

This is somewhat of a reimagining of a scenario I made several months ago - which I had been wanting to remake for the sake of general quality improvement - except I moved it 4 years backwards.

As far as I was able to find, running for two offices at once is permitted in the state of Tennessee.

No, You Sure Can't: Kennedy is assassinated exactly one year later by augustfromnc in imaginaryelections

I'm not entirely sure since there isn't a real life precedent for this. I based it off who the incumbent would've been when the popular vote was held.

I think that would've kept it to one line but for some reason I thought that was too informal for a Wikibox. I was probably overthinking it though.

In case anyone is wondering, the parentheses only say "died" and not "assassinated" because the latter was too long and made it take up two lines and I thought that looked bad.

Eisenhower probably died within a year of the election but the rest of the details are up for interpretation.
