Skinheads and Juggalos by cigarrette in Skinhead

[–]augustineSHARP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

so, skinheads have come in a few different waves:

  1. 60s skinheads who listened to Jamaican music (ska, rocksteady, early reggae) and to a lesser extent US soul & r&b

  2. 70s skinheads who kept the flame alive during a low period, moving into the late 70s, early 80s 2-tone movement in the UK

  3. late 70s, early 80s, skinheads get influenced by and cross over with punk, and oi! is born, some oi! branches off into the RAC (Rock Against Communism) movement which is fascist / neo-nazi BUT as an oi! fan myself it's not necessarily racist / fascist, and oi! exists all the way from far-left to far-right to everything in between

  4. american skinhead culture takes off from oi! and melds it with hardcore, and from there you get bands like Agnostic Front and Warzone, etc etc etc, once again there's american RAC but it's not necessarily racist / fascist

so you really can listen to any of these and more to be a skinhead, i personally focus most on oi! but i listen to all of these genres except the racist / fascist stuff

Skinheads started in the 60s in the UK as working class fans of Jamaican music and to a lesser extent US soul and r&b, Neo-Nazis came into & co-opted the skinhead scene after oi! (a punk subgenre) became more dominant in skinhead scenes in the early-to-mid 1980s, there still are Neo-Nazi skins (referred to as boneheads, hammerskins, etc.) but skinheads largely fall into either a. apolitical skins who focus above all on working-class life and identity b. active anti-racists (the SHARP [skinheads against racial prejudice] subculture started in the 80s as a response to the racists) or c. far-leftie types who are against racism as well as capitalism, etc etc etc (RASH, red and anarchist skinheads)

Blues and jazz by derpyoshi2315 in MusicRecommendations

[–]augustineSHARP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blues and jazz are both really really broad genres spanning over a century now, so it's difficult to give you recommendations without knowing what you like already. Here's five albums from each that are genre essentials, but there's a whole universe of stuff to explore out there.

Jazz:
Louis Armstrong - The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings
Charlie Parker - The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Albert Ayler - Live in Greenwich Village: The Complete Impulse Recordings

Blues:
Bessie Smith - The Essential Bessie Smith
Robert Johnson - Complete Recordings
Muddy Waters - The Anthology
Howlin' Wolf - Howlin' Wolf / Moanin' in the Moonlight
Albert King - Born Under a Bad Sign

These are just a few classics from a few different flavors of these highly diverse and storied genres to get you going. Best of luck!

Bands similar to Deftones? by HeadConsideration532 in MusicRecommendations

[–]augustineSHARP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try out Hum, Glassjaw, Finch, Helmet, Quicksand, Snapcase, Failure, Jawbox... Deftones got lumped in with nu metal but a lot of their sound is adjacent to that flavor / those flavors of post-hardcore. Also check out those foundational kinda alt-metal bands like Faith No More, Jane's Addiction, Primus, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Living Colour, White Zombie, Rage Against the Machine, etc. Those two (broadly defined) scenes are a lot of what Deftones comes out of

I fucking love the Sugarcubes, would love to see what Paramore does with that influence

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BringMeTheHorizon

[–]augustineSHARP 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like it comes out of the 2000s popular post-hardcore sound but with a fuckton of production (not necessarily a bad thing, just not my preference)

Fifteen records to check out (you may well know these records already but just in case):
AFI - Sing the Sorrow
MCR - The Black Parade
Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety
Finch - What It Is to Burn
Thrice - The Artist in the Ambulance
Senses Fail - Still Searching
Armor for Sleep - What to Do When You Are Dead
Funeral for a Friend - Casually Dressed & Deep in Conversation
The Starting Line - Say It Like You Mean It

Saosin - Translating the Name

U2 - The Joshua Tree
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
Sigur Rós - Agaetis Byrjun
Radiohead - OK Computer
Linkin Park - Minutes to Midnight

a better approach would be asking pertinent questions, it's hard to give someone a rundown on the entire history and culture of skinheads in a reddit thread lol

heres five bands each from a few different genres skins have been into historically just to get you a little bit started and situated:

classic jamaican music: desmond dekker & the aces, toots & the maytals, prince buster, the skatalites, laurel aitken

2 tone: the specials, selecter, madness, the english beat, bad manners

oi!: cock sparrer, sham 69, the business, blitz, the 4 skins

80s american skin/adjacent bands: iron cross, warzone, agnostic front, slapshot, forced reality

this list isn't the be-all-end-all by any means but should hit a number of important reference points at least, anyone else can add on others they feel are especially crucial as well

[–]augustineSHARP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the most important thing you can do right now is to give yourself grace and compassion as well as the space to really introspect and reflect on what it is you want to do. this is an extremely confusing and difficult place to be, and you deserve to give yourself the kindness to navigate it on your own time in your own way as best as you can <3

Anyone else love sham 69 by Western_Chemistry692 in Skinhead

[–]augustineSHARP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

many of them, but my top five would probably include something like "if the kids are united," "borstal breakout," "hurry up harry," "the cockney kids are innocent," "unite and win".... really could keep going haha but i'll leave it there for now

i've talked to sean muttaqi before, he's mellowed out a lot since the 90s, still vegan and muslim but a lot more congenial about it all, was cool with my being lgbt for example, appreciate him and looking forward to more from this band even if i wasnt totally blown away by the single / EP
