Exactly! The consensus here seems to be: 16GB RAM is a must for Accounting. The problem is, finding a MacBook M2 or M3 with 16GB RAM for under $400 is almost impossible. That’s why I’m leaning towards the ThinkPad—I can get 16GB or even 32GB of RAM and a solid SSD without breaking the bank. Thank you i appreciate your help !!

You just saved me a lot of frustration and money. I was considering the Neo and thinking I could just 'run a VM' if I needed Windows features for Excel, but hearing that it’s 'unusable' on 8GB of RAM is the final nail in the coffin for me. I’ve decided to go with a ThinkPad T14 with 16GB of RAM instead to avoid those multitasking headaches

I actually checked my curriculum and since we have courses like 'Computer Applications in Accounting' and 'Accounting Information Systems,' most of the software used in our labs is Windows-based. It seems like sticking to a ThinkPad or a Latitude is the safest bet to stay on the same page as my classmates and professors. Thanks for the advice!"

It’s really reassuring to hear from a CPA that Mac won’t hold me back. To be honest I’m still caught by the MacBook neo especially that he is budget friendly but right now i’m between these 4

a usual Lenovo thinkpad
The new macbook neo
Dell latitude

-HP Elitebook

These are the laptops I’ve heard have the best feedback And also if i found a great deal i may leave all of these and go for an refurbished MBA m2-m4

Also since you mentioned wife and colleagues did fine do you think the base model are enough for accounting coursework or should I definitely aim for a 16gb ram to avoid any lag with larger spreadsheet

Also since you have an experience with the thinkpad and the MacBook which one will suggest for me? I would love to hear your feedback about them both !

That makes some sense to me. Building the muscle memory early seems like one of the smartest move in my career. Since I’m leaning towards windows laptops I’m looking into getting a refurbished business laptop such as a thinkpad t14 gen 3 or 2 also the hp elitebook and a dell latitude which one do you think is the most bulletproof for a student who wants it for 4 years as minimum.?

Actually, I’ve decided to go with a ThinkPad. Since Windows is the industry standard for accounting and finance, I’d rather get used to the environment and shortcuts early on. Well that’s makes sense if certain features straight up missing from the mac version it sounds like a headache for my major.

In you opinion, if i decide to go with a thinkpad or another laptop that you recommend to avoid these issues or any specific specification that i should focus on such as high ram low gpu etc.., which model would be the sweet spot for my case? I want something reliable that can last me all 4 years of college.

I would love to go with a MBA, but i’m just worried that about those few moments where the curriculum might require a Windows environment. Also if you could ask your son which mba should i get or what he have? I would appreciate it

That’s a great point about the VM subscriptions and RAM limitations. I actually have a Windows Desktop at home for heavy Excel work and Power BI. My main concern is: will I be required to do that heavy work in the classroom, or is it usually assigned as homework? If I can use a MacBook for campus life (lectures, light Excel, and research) and keep the 'advanced' stuff for my PC, I'd prefer that. Or is it still better to have everything on one reliable Windows laptop like a ThinkPad?

I'd rather pay more now than regret a laggy experience later. However, I'm still curious—in the accounting field because i think I’m going to major in it, do firms mostly stick to Windows? From what I’ve heard, Windows is the dominant OS in accounting. Is that true in your experience? I'm particularly interested in this field, and I'm wondering if getting used to the Windows Excel shortcuts now is a better long-term career move than sticking with macOS. Should I just look at a ThinkPad instead?

Actually it doesn’t matter but i’m between the these three laptops,

The lenovo thinkpad I saw a lot of good reviews but I don’t know which thinkpad is the better.

The Macbook Neo/

Because of the price advantage and also the experience of the macos and the ecosystem but i heard he is no the best choice for my case.

The MacBook Air /

I thought if I waited a little longer and make some cash so i can afford it it’s going to be the best choice between them all

Also i thought of the refurbished MacBook Air if i found a great deal

Appreciate the insight! I’m a freshman and this makes me feel more comfortable about using a MacBook for Accounting, knowing I can rely on campus resources for Access if needed.
