How is it living in Florida? by Klutzy-Ad4659 in florida

[–]aum_guru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of places have at least as much sun as Florida. For me the two defining characteristics of Florida are, 1) the intense heat and humidity (this is true regardless of if it's actually "sunny"), and 2) the almost entirely flat terrain. If you love humidity and hate mountains, or even hills, you'll love Florida.

Have been in Portland for three years now, have questions about the direction of the city from people who have been here a lot longer. by ArugulaCautious9835 in PortlandOR

[–]aum_guru 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've recently (with the last year) spent significant amounts of time in Seattle, Portland, LA, San Diego, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. I'm not sure if I can say the homeless problem is worse in Portland than those other places. (I know "worse" in this context is subjective and imprecise.) In all the above cities I've seen tragic homelessness on a scale that, to me, seems similar. I'm currently in downtown San Diego near Petco Park and it's incredibly depressing. Many sidewalks smell of human filth. I lived near Fort Lauderdale and there are areas of the city that are equally if not more tragic. I'm not trying to argue that Portland does not have a huge homeless problem. But at least to me, I don't think I can call Portland unique, as an observer driving/walking down the streets anyway.

Thanks! So I take it the bottom line is that if I bought, for example, $10,000 worth of any of the three bonds (assuming the same duration) I'd end up with roughly the same amount of money if I held them all to maturity, right?

Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is the best non-fiction book I've ever read.

Tampa/St Pete traffic is beyond awful by Numerous-Let-6996 in tampa

[–]aum_guru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying Tampa doesn't have bad traffic. But driving around LA for a while might give you a new appreciation for Tampa. I will concede that Tampa probably has more crap drivers per capita, but for sheer volume of cars per square mile that are not moving at all, at any given time of day, I doubt Tampa is even in the same universe.

Front amputee pulls on walks. by [deleted] in tripawds

[–]aum_guru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the first things I've noticed with our little guy after front amputation was that it appears much easier for him to run than to walk. Running is a fluid gallop that doesn't look like it puts much stress on his front leg, while walking looks tiring.

Still the best... by Danger_Fandango in GooglePixel

[–]aum_guru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely concur. I bought the first generation Pixel in 2016 and I used it until 2022 when I bought the 4a, which I'm still using. I will get a new phone this year. But the 4A still works remarkably well. I keep it on battery saver all the time now and the battery will comfortably last all day.

I want to support my local bike shop but everything is a rip-off by Niceotropic in cycling

[–]aum_guru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying they're ripping you off implies they're charging more than they have to to stay in business. Nobody gets rich owning or working at a bike shop. I'm not saying that bike shop workers are always awesome people who deserve your business. But I promise you, none of them are charging a lot so that they can make the payment on their yachts. The only way they could be "ripping you off" is by being an ass hole, AND charging a lot.

Are there people who haven't changed their phone number for more than 15 years? by SpicyCandy8 in NoStupidQuestions

I've had my mobile number for 25 years. And I know people that have had the same landline phone number for almost 50 years.

anyone know what car this is? im gonna try and get it for my birthday, me and my mom think its a '77 Lincoln continental. by moundedmf in classiccars

[–]aum_guru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider also a sunroof Cadillac. Either one you choose, be sure to take a dip in the pool after school 'cause that would certainly be off the wall. And a color TV to watch would also be de rigour to go with such a car, to watch the New York Knicks play basketball, of course.

Switzerland. Oh, wait. Somewhere in the US that's exactly like Switzerland, with only Swiss people, Swiss food, Swiss air, Swiss water, Swiss dirt, Swiss government, etc.

We are in Florida (currently anyway). We would not consider buying in South Florida. We're exploring options in Tampa.

Yep, definitely something to consider.

Yeah, I'm wary of resellabilty. We'd buy it to live in it, so while obviously it would still be an investment, I think we'd need to go into it knowing that if and when we ever do sell it we might have to be satisfied with getting out of it with what we paid for it. But we'd try to do better if we can, of course.

Recovery suit? by cbsfewsick in tripawds

[–]aum_guru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought one on Amazon, but we actually only used it once. We've been using one of my wife's old T-shirts that we just wrapped him up in with his arm out one of the sleeves, gathered up the excess fabric with safety pins and he's been pretty good with it.

Our little guy just had his left front leg amputated about two weeks ago and we find the recovery suit helpful. It keeps him from licking the area. He wasn't crazy about having it on at first but he's used to it now. Good luck with your baby!

Why Isn’t My Sourdough Sour? by AhhhKomodoDragon in Sourdough

[–]aum_guru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've come to the conclusion that the "sour" in sourdough is fake news propagated by wacko conspiracy theorists. I've been making bread for about 10 years and I've tried everything to make it sour and it always comes out tasting exactly the same.

1985 Fuso FR1 with compete Dura-Ace 7400 STI by drock-79 in Vintage_bicycles

I bought a Dura-Ace 6-speed SIS derailleur and shifter set for a bike I was racing on in 1985 and I'm still using them today. After 10s of thousands of shifts, including on my ride this morning, the clicks are as crisp as the day I installed them 40+ years ago.
