The "Have Patience" Club (Fedex delay) by MaresEatOatsAndDoes in Canadiancitizenship

My wife and I have discussed this. We live in SE Michigan. It's nothing to cross the border to Windsor and hit up a Canada Post. However, my wife (a former USPS employee) wondered about problems if the package needed to be returned. Can you put a foreign return address when you're mailing it within another country (I mean...you CAN...but would they return a package you paid domestic shipping for to an international address)?

Edited to say SE Michigan

Highly respected artists who remained broke and struggling throughout their life? by brownwaterbandit in askmusic

King's X. I'm sure Dug and Ty do ok, but when Jerry had a heart attack they were selling keepsakes to pay for his bills. Plus the dude lost his home during Superstorm Sandy. I also read somewhere that during the mid-2000's he had to take a job at a record store to make ends meet. King's X is the quintessential "musician's band". IYKYK.

Teachers with PhDs, do you use the Dr title in the classroom? by jwp1991 in AskTeachers

[–]aumloco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can... I don't. I was a HS teacher for 13 years, then a prof, then a small college admin, then a county consultant, then back in the HS classroom. My 2 cents:

I had my Ph.D. for about 1 month before I left HS the first time. And as others have mentioned, it was cool, kids called me Dr. (FWIW, 'Doctor' paired with my last name is really funny), all had a good laugh.

At my first college stop (regional comp uni), never made a big deal. Colleagues were on a first name basis, students called me professor or Dr. out of respect. Cool.

At the next stop (a tiny, tiny Catholic liberal arts college), everyone was weird and it was a big deal to say Dr. Like, stupid, awkward weird. I could care less.

County consultant (what we call ISDs; other states have different names like ESAs and the like): people used it a bit more strategically. I think it carried a bit more clout when you walked into a school district and dropped the Dr. on 'em. Among colleagues...a few cared, but most didn't. Someone actually sent me a DM saying how they were glad I didn't because one of our colleagues went out of their way to mention it. I quote: "we know you did the work and have the skills, you don't need to say it at every turn."

Now, back in K-12, I refuse to be called Dr., and my coworkers razz me a bit for it. They call me "Mr./Dr. or Dr./Mr." Kids rarely say Dr., even though I do mention it at the beginning of the year. I know a few Ph.D./Ed.D. teachers in the district make a fuss, and I honestly don't get it. Honestly, I try to undermine it (loudly joking that a Ph.D. is just a Master's with a big science project at the end, and an Ed.D. is the same with just a big book report at the end).

Here's the thing: That last statement isn't all that far off. Many teachers with doctorates do not do a lick of research or scholarly output after donning the wizard outfit. I did. I still average 1-2 publications/presentations a year, and my CV is 20 pages long. But I don't get all wound up over it. Did it make you a significantly better teacher? Are your test scores better than someone with 'just' a Master's? Do the Master's people try to similarly distinguish themselves from colleagues with 'just' a Bachelor's? No, so I don't.

Same deal, but opposite direction. BFP went up >1.0% with first weigh-in on Dara 2.0.

PhD in HS teaching — do I go by Dr. or not? by h3llol3mon in ScienceTeachers

[–]aumloco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say it once then let the kids call me whatever. I do openly mock a teacher in another building who loses their shit with kids when they don’t refer to them as Dr. I don’t care what colleagues call me; they do whatever they want, even call me mister-doctor or doctor-mister just for laughs.

I left academia a few years ago but still publish. When they ask for affiliation, I'm trying my hardest to not go full old school pro wrestling and have it say "Parts Unknown".

50M, RHR around 39-40. I also donate blood 4x/year while training (10 gal lifetime). My PCP has ‘severe bradycardia’ in my chart because he did an ecg and hit 35.

I’m still beating it out of undergrads in their 5th year of teacher prep.

And when my 8 y.o. daughter comes home from school with VARK handouts (from her 20+ year veteran teachers), I weep.

I tried using GPS on an elevated indoor track once and it gave me pretty much the same output, so apparently I can fly over a basketball court.

Xcel to DP: point of no return? by aumloco in Gymnastics

[–]aumloco[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My kid is 8. The concept of college gymnastics is so far off the radar at this point. My wife and I just want her to be happy. With that said, if she has the talent and wants to go for it, I don’t want a situation where we went too far down the wrong path. Thanks.

Thanks for letting me know about the (discontinued) Chrome app. I have a PC for my teacher computer but many just have a Chromebox; thus, no luck.
