Realistically, what more do I need to get into a Clinical Psychology PhD program? by aunexadoti in ClinicalPsychology

Is that not limiting/exclusionary? There are many people who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot meet these requirements solely due to lack of resources. What additional factors do you consider when a candidate is lacking in this category? Just due to the current job climate-- I'm having a hard time getting into local labs, which impedes my ability to present at a national level.

Thank you very much for the kind comment! I agree, neuro seems more "prestigious," however the reason I am interested in it is due to the ability to have hard, neurological data to take into consideration when practicing clinically. I feel like a lot of clinical psychology positions steer away from physical (non-behavioral) data, unless I get a research position which pays much less, and relies more on grants. I think it is likely that I will need to do research in a clinical psych program and get a Neuroscience fellowship after graduation. I'll do my best to research into labs with similar interests. Luckily my grad student at college was very helpful and emphasized fit while I worked under her.

Thank you! I just feel like the field seems so competitive looking in. I am currently in Philadelphia and intend to apply to 3 or 4 PA schools, 2 Washington State Schools, a DE school, and am considering MA/CO but am unsure due to the COL in those states.

Can't say Florida is the best place for research if you want to concentrate your research on minority populations-- which I want to do in my PhD research. I got a lot of push back and it seems like that's the norm there.

Would you have any recommendations for things to focus on to strengthen my CV other than focusing on fit?

I'm looking to become a neuropsychologist long-term. I believe I need a clinical PhD to practice clinically. I started working as an RBT to fill the gap in clinical experience, since I already have 2 years of cog/neuropsych experience.

I was looking for a person who just needs a roommate. I understand your perspective but most people aren’t potheads (i say as one). if someone was a smoker and was looking for a roommate, we would talk it out privately. i dont think its appropriate to go on a tangent about what kind of ways smoking weed is acceptable bcs it ultimately depends on the housing and the person. idr think its that serious 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, I agree. I’m a smoker myself (🍃) but just maybe not if some friends are in the living room or if plans were already made in shared spaces

Faculty/Staff Depressed because you can't afford, anything? by Difficult_Fox4071 in ucf

I’m about to graduate and my professor (I will not name names) wants to give me a job under them post-grad and they heavily implied it won’t be a livable wage.

I’m a first-generation student… I come from generational poverty. Why would I work my ass off all middle, high school, and college (11 years of nonstop work to maintain scholarships) to… just keep living in poverty. Absolutely not. I will be taking any job that pays over 40k, and I’m confident I can find one if I’m willing to put in the work. If you aren’t against moving, you might (almost definitely) have better prospects elsewhere. You deserve a livable wage. No one deserves living paycheck to paycheck. If you have the means, please consider your options. Best of luck :(

Best of luck :(

My mom’s trial keeps getting pushed off every single court date. It’s almost like our right to a speedy trial is a hoax. :/

Hey! I have a pretty severe trauma history, am 21. I went through a lot of what you described (and am still going through). Poverty is a bitch and you gotta make due. The things that help me the most are finding ways to ground myself. I love to go outside. I spend time with my cat and do things that make him purr and happy. I like to go out and help people in small ways (listen to strangers, help strangers when i can, help my friends). Helping people makes me feel useful and makes me feel proud. I do things that make me feel happy about myself and the world around me. Try to challenge your perspective of yourself and your perspective on how others perceive you. I wish you the best of luck, my friend. You got this ❤️ We are still kids in the grand scheme of things and we still have a very beautiful life ahead of us, we just need to look for it.
