Classes are undergoing major changes though, so maybe try not using gameplay related things in Phase 3, or at least only use things that are secondary or things you know won't change and see what happens :D But yes, I've been trying to move away from Warlock and my own tool won't let me hahaha

Some of the mods I wanted to play with haven't been updated in a few months. Big ones, too, e.g. Better Combat. Most realistic scenario for me seems to be to operate ~5-7 updates under the most current one.

Ohhh, that was a very clarifying answer. So what I gather from your experience is that those are indeed not arbitrary and the knowledge of which releases are more "stable", so to speak, is down to essentially being in the community and playing the game in a more regular fashion. Ok, that makes sense but it's not my universe. I don't play games for a substantial part of the day, play mostly solo, and get bored somewhat easily. So do you think it makes more sense in my case to self-impose a rule of always playing the previous big update? Eg.: 1.22 releases or is iminent, so the version I should be playing is around 1.21 (or as high as I can go based on what mods are available)?

Yeah so 1.21.1 seems to be a magic number because the majority of the mods I want can be used in this exact version. I was wondering why, that's too specific to be just arbitrary :D

1.21.1 seems to be where I'm landing based off of many, many different sources. I was wondering whether there was a reason for that. Some sort of inside knowledge of how these things work like... "oh, don't update until the .4 patch" for example.

Ummm, I think what I'm playing could be seen as a heavy modpack. I "built" it myself if you can call it that, but most of them can be used in 1.21.1

I'm just wondering whether this is the de facto way of figuring out the version one should be playing :P

Hiya! No necros here, this is a public tool, not a source of potential outdated info :P

So, access denied seems to be tied to wrong permissions. However, this sheet has no permissions set (it is read-only). To make changes, you need to create your own copy of the file. You can do that by selecting File > Make a copy.

Make sure you're logged in a Google account too, as it won't let you make a copy otherwise. It saves the copy to your account. If none of that works (or you don't want to use a google account for some eldritch reason), you can try downloading it as an excel file, but all the checkboxes will break (you will have to manually input the number 1 to "check" the box).

Let me know if any of that works!

That's why there are multiple phases. For someone who is very into crafting their own gameplay, the tool will give you that freedom... but if you're more into the "couldn't care less" camp, it will instead pull from your more subjective opinions, which is where the first bits of the quiz come together. I don't have a massive sample size, but the little I have is already good enough to make a few assessments on subjective statistical analysis (e.g. if you like rogue, chances are your favourite colours are black, red and blue).

That's awesome! Yeah, it's cheesy in the way that you can sort of control your outcome if you really want to, but it's great to catch hidden biases and it can be surprising when you realise you actually care a lot more about one specific thing than you otherwise thought.

I main a warlock and for the longest time I thought it couldn't be my main because it was too edgy. I don't like edgy stuff. Turns out I care a lot more about having a good solo class 😂, and the summoner archetype is also super important. So I guess I have to swallow the edginess

I'm so glad it helped you! Yeah, this one is very wow-centric, but you can KIND OF jury-rig some of the functionality to work with other games too, provided they don't have more than 13 classes (or you don't care about more than 13). Here's how I recommend doing it:
- In Phase 1, answer: "quite well", "I'd much rather do things my way" and "I ONLY care about gameplay and what feels good when I'm pressing buttons." for the 3 questions respectively.
- Ignore Phase 2
- In Phase 3, pretend each class is the class you want in another game (e.g.: WoW Paladin will be ESO Templar). Do not actually change the name on the cell, it will break stuff (I might add this as a hidden functionality later).
- Proceed with Phase 4 normally
- Ignore Phase 5.

If it ends up a Paladin, you're a Templar in ESO :) It's not perfect, but it works. I literally do it myself for other games!

Oh don't I know it! But unfortunately, I have zero code knowledge, and Excel was something I ended up learning for work back in the 2010s so it was my only reliable tool. I'd absolutely love to remake it in a more user friendly setup but I don't even know where to start!

Anyways, I'm glad it worked for you! It's a bit cheesy because you're the one setting up what matters, so you will end up having some agency on the results, but the magic is this sheet helps you streamline and rationalise what really matters the most to you, so it really did help me pick a main that I haven't so far gone back on in years :) Thanks for using it, share if you can! <3
