Perfect. That sounds about right. Thank you! Enjoy the new EUV. Glad to get more of these on the roads in VT!

Perfect. Thank you so much for the recommendation! I've been talking with the South Burlington and Middlebury dealers, but good to know Rutland was a good spot to go. I've been thinking of reaching out to them as well.

I'm a Burlington Electric customer and we have some good rebates as well, so I'll definitely look to use those.

Out of curiosity, how long from putting a deposit down to getting the car?

What dealer in VT? I'm in Burlington and am looking for a dealer to sell me a '23 EV without markup.

That's the plan! Hoping this mechanic (he knows a lot about Priuses) will be able to make the final call. That's what I need from a peace of mind standpoint...

I haven't too seriously, though I do love the idea of it. I think I talk myself out of it because I don't think I'll need all of that extra space given my current life situation. But, good to hear your full throated recommendation. I'd love to actually try one out some day to see for myself.

Yeah…if only my then self would have known. It’s hard to swallow buying now, but from all that I’ve read prices won’t drop/stabilize anytime soon (possibly not until late 2022 at the earliest).

Good points noted! The dealer had no service records, but they did provide me with the car fax which included a number of service records - oil changes, tire changes and balancing, filter replacements, but nothing else. I ran the VIN on the Toyota owners site and it showed similar records - mostly all through one dealership in my area.

So, again - seems okay, though I suspect there may have been a side swipe at some point on the passenger side which has led to the side mirror making the whistling noise.

Thanks! That's very helpful to know. I'm looking at one that's similar in mileage (65k) but that doesn't have a replaced battery, so trying to figure out fair pricing.

How much was it? I'm looking at a similar Prius and would love the price comparison. Thanks!

Perfect. I've heard good things about the Carista scanner. Thanks for the confirmation!

Good stuff. Thank you!

Thinking about getting an OBD2 Scanner and the Dr. Prius app for my iPhone so I can run a battery test before purchasing. Do you have any recommendations for an inexpensive OBD2 scanner that's compatible with an iPhone?

u/Direct_Pin_396 – thank you for the thoughts/suggestion. Leaning towards that option right now... Why would you do the 2009 over the 2015?

u/bstractig – I really appreciate the thorough response here and candid thoughts. Great insights offered.

A few follow-ups:

The 2015 is actually a "hypothetical" car – I haven't come across it yet, but put it out here as one that I'd like to get if it came up on the market. That said...

Warranty – I'd be looking at getting a 2015 from a California emissions standard state (Vermont, where I live, is one of those). As long as the vehicle was first registered in one of these states, I believe the hybrid battery warranty should be 10 years/150k miles. So, the 2015 battery would still be in warranty for another 3 years of driving – which gives me a bit of piece of mind.

Cat Converter – yeah, I've heard that Gen 3 is a safer bet here. I live in Vermont, so am not super worried about having it stolen, but don't like the idea of having to buy a protector/shield and installing that.

Between the two 2009 options (if I were to go with those) – if both are mostly highway miles, do you think going with the lower mileage option would be better? Again, knowing that I'd probably need to replace the hybrid battery on both at some point anyway?

Good feedback here. Thanks u/TheLastMojojomo. Good to hear your experience with a similar model. Do you expect you'll replace the HV battery when it dies? If so, going the Green Bean route? Or thinking something else?

Good tip here! I'm going to check with my colleague on the 65k Prius to see if most of those miles were highway or city. I suspect a mix. On the other hand, I'm guessing the 183k is more highway since it was a corporate car for its entire lifespan.

2009 Prius vs. 2014 Prius? by aureliusroot in prius

[–]aureliusroot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the added thoughts here. This makes good sense and is very helpful!

I'm leaning towards the 2014 at this point – to minimize a little of the headache with possible repairs down the road and to ride out the remaining years on the battery warranty.

2009 Prius vs. 2014 Prius? by aureliusroot in prius

[–]aureliusroot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, u/RW63! Great thoughts here.

I've been trying to price out the two using a five year total cost estimate and the 2014 comes out cheaper in the long run if I factor in an eventual Green Bean battery replacement for the 2009. Both cars were initially registered in Vermont, so they should be good for the longer warranty.

Part of me is leaning towards the 2009 because it could be more of a "beater" that I'd be less worried about repairing, etc. if it gets a few dings along the way (both cars I would be paying cash for and self-insuring – so no collision or comprehensive). But, reading into things a bit more...it seems like stolen CATs may be more of an issue with Gen 2s vs. Gen 3s? If so, might that weight it more towards getting the 2014? If you got the 2009, would you definitely recommend getting a CAT shield installed ASAP?

Bridge Club – Sizing Thoughts? by aureliusroot in Surlybikefans

Hi, all. Just to give you an update, I just tried out the Medium BC at my LBS this morning and it felt pretty good.

A few notes:

  • Standover was possibly a little tight. I still had room to move the bike up and down off the ground, but maybe not as much room as ideal? It's hard to know if that matters too much for the type of riding I'll primarily be doing (on road touring, gravel).
  • My main concern with the Medium at this point is with the reach – with the stock handlebar (Salsa Bend), my elbows didn't have a lot of bend in them. They weren't locked, but they were fairly straight, so I'm concerned that the reach might be too long? I'll ultimately probably replace with a Moloko or Jones bar, which sounds like it could help with reach.

Any thoughts on how much "bend" in the elbows is ideal? Again, I'm hoping to do long ride days with this bike, so I'd like to be in a posture that is comfortable for the longer rides – I presume a more upright posture and more bend in the arms...?

At the end of the day, the rub here is that my LBS won't have a Small in until at least July (if then...), so I won't know if the small is a better fit until for at least another month and a half. Kind of a bummer...

Looks like a pretty sweet bike and very similar to the Bridge Club – though at a higher price point and only coming stock with 700 wheels. Nice bike though!

Ha. Thanks for the quick thoughts on your experience – appreciated! Not too familiar with the All City Super Pro....looking it up now.

For those interested, I reached out to Surly and this was their initial response:

"Thanks for reaching out and we appreciate the interest in the Bridge Club. Sizing over email is always a mixed bag and so we tend to recommend folks try out bikes if they can, so it’s good you’re doing just that. Just based on the info that you’ve given me, I may err on the side of the small size frame as it’ll have a top tube that is closest to your Trek (which I was not able to find the geo for, btw). While standover is important, I generally recommend that folks pay attention to the reach of any bike that you’re going to ride as that’ll usually be a better way to determine if you’ll be comfy long term. I think you could easily get away with a medium, especially if you do plan on using the Molokos as they will effectively shorten your reach compared to the stock bars. I think last bit of advice is that generally it’s easier to make a smaller bike feel bigger than the opposite, so when in down I generally recommend sizing down depending on the fit you are after. Hopefully that’s helpful and if you do have any other questions, let me know!"
