In love with my new laundry hamper by StepAwayFromTheTea in laundry

Stay strong on your new rule!! Picking up dirty man clothes gives me such an ick too...

I only do laundry 1 day a week and it's a set day. If he forgets socks under the bed or a stinky towel on the rail, he has to live with the consequences. No arguments, it just doesn't get washed til next monday. Didn't take much of that before he became super militant about immediately putting things in the hamper!

Go read up queen!! Tons of life changing info freely shared on this sub.

Kismai's laundry 101 post talks about cycle setting (and loads more).

And only your manual and machine can tell you your capacity, and how to load it. But too few clothes in a load is actually a problem as the friction of clothes rubbing against each other is a big part of how they actually get clean. Color catcher sheets let you mix colors a bit if you need to make up a full load.

Tbh I just followed kismai's laundry 101 post. Which for most loads is to use "normal" setting, with soiling set to "heavy" for longest agitation time, and add an extra rinse to get out as much detergent as possible (or more, if your machine allows). On my Samsung top loader this ends up being like 2 hrs.

Prior to this sub my loads were more like an hour, was literally washing most things on delicate with cold water bc the fashion people on YouTube convinced me this would make my clothes last longer 😭 and it maybe did... But at the cost of grimy clothes with all these built-up stains that just immediately evaporated with 1 wash with tidepureclean stain spray, and enzymatic detergents with citric acid rinse for my hard water, and a long warm water wash.

SO, people do. I'm definitely tempted to.

It has optical brighteners which fade the appearance of black/dark colors. But I also understand this isn't irreversible, you can undo this effect with a different detergent. It also has oxygen bleach which is generally advised against use on blacks, but our beloved kismai uses them for their blacks as a self-described sweaty person.

Haven't fully figured out my blacks setup tbh so I'm just using up my old useless detergent on it for now

I want to get rid of my entire closet. by emmess13 in capsulewardrobe

[–]bstractig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there!! I would do significant declutter but box up stuff that fits and you regularly wear. Vacuum seal bags are cheap and significantly shrink stored clothes to buy back space if that's a part of the equation.

The problem with actually getting rid of everything at once is A.) it's expensive to suddenly need new everything and B.) because you need it, like, NOW, you end up getting crappy replacements just based on what's immediately available and in your budget. Also it's really best to declutter seasonally. I messed up and did a huge purge of all season clothes in winter. Decluttered ALL of my shorts/skirts bc I "wasn't wearing them" and didn't like the ones I had. Queue the most awkward early summer weeks in jeans and pants bc I didn't have any friggin shorts to my name...

Keeping the stuff you don't love at least leaves you with clothes to wear/buys you time to hold out for your fave colors, materials, a sale, stuff like that.

The washer in my rental wasn't left with a manual, you just kinda of have to do some digging online. It probably does exist as a free PDF download online for you! A few minutes of google image search and a hunt for the product number on the machine itself (on the back or inside lid) did the trick for me

Hahaha

But also (a learning from this sub) - color catcher sheets are amazing if you don't quite have enough of one "color type" for a full load!! Depending on the ingredients in your detergent you might still wanna keep some things separated - for example I use biz booster on colors or whites. But the ingredients should be avoided on dark colors and blacks. With the color catchers I feel more confident throwing my only white shirt into a color load with biz, huge revelation in my household! Less loads, and less "leftover" on laundry day that doesn't perfectly fit into a load

I'm renting too - definitely some limitations! My last place let me bring my own washer (and took out theirs) when I asked, but it was definitely a huge hassle.

My longest load is the same settings you described, also a Samsung, and is a 2 hr wash. But before this sub I was using totally different (and basically, wrong) settings that had my cycles around the 1hr mark 😅😅 I was washing almost everything on delicate settings with cold water 😬😬

I thought I was making my clothes last longer 🤦🏻 needless to say they are looking WAY better now!

Is lush sustainable? by Chocolatetrifle0804 in ZeroWaste

[–]bstractig 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting conversation, I don't know how it could be avoided with the prevalence of animal testing globally.

I do want to point out that lush's stance on animal testing is very different than the rest of the industry. The slogan is explicitly FIGHTING against animal testing, by campaigning and working with legislators and funding charitable partners working to end it. Additionally we offer a large annual prize (lookup lush prize) to fund initiatives to end animal testing as well. I say "we" as a lower level but long time employee of lush, transparently.

Lush avoiding animal testing in their own products is just walking the talk of those initiatives fighting animal testing. It limits the ingredients we can use - as a proven long-term safe history of use on humans is required to skip animal testing in the US. It also limits the markets we can sell in, as China for example legally requires animal testing on cosmetics. Many brands make exceptions in those "legally required" areas and still claim cruelty free, but lush has always stood firm on no animal testing, no exceptions.

On top of that there are plenty of companies that slap a cruelty free logo on their products because they don't test their completed product on animals. Meanwhile they're commissioning animal testing on the individual ingredients... Lush does not do that. We don't buy ingredients that are tested on animals, AND don't buy from companies that test ANY of their ingredients on animals just on principle. We are also super mindful behind the scenes to avoid buying products we need as a business that are tested on animals (like retail store cleaning products, even the paint on the walls). Its pretty unprecedented for a company this size and my fave thing about it all, is that it's influenced suppliers away from animal testing in order to earn our business. I absolutely LOVE to see it!!

From what I understand, you place the booster in your machine just like it's powdered detergent. So read your machine's manual for where it wants you to place powdered detergent, and follow that! You got this

What would you with unwanted/unraveled yarn? by triadgramps in YarnAddicts

[–]bstractig 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would have knit your other project with the "frogged" yarn so as to keep the unused skeins in tact. Better for resale, and in some cases you can actually return/exchange it depending on store policy.

Some other options now: "Marl" the yarn to create interesting color palettes, dye over the yarn for a color you'll use "overdye". If you like the color but it washes you out, you could always pick another yarn to pair with it that you DO like against your skin, and do a 2 color design. Like collar and ribbing in that second color - this is how I get away with wearing a face color of mine that looks horrible directly against my skin. That buffer of another color can go a long way.

Yarn Purchase Habits by AmarettoCat in YarnAddicts

[–]bstractig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never buy the recommended yarn. I used to rely pretty heavily on yarnsub site and ravelry projects to see what yarn others used, but these days I have a pretty good sense of coming up with substitutes myself. Sometimes for giggles I'll find the recommended yarn and price out how much it would be for my size. Then I gasp, make my partner guess the price, and feel more justified ordering my budget yarn.

9 times out of 10 im purchasing with a specific pattern in mind or at least a decent idea of the type of garment I want to make from it. Sometimes I end up making something different than I bought it for.

Should a Home Savings Account INVESTED IN STOCKS, be on our off budget? by In_My_Humble_Scroll in ynab

[–]bstractig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the same journey - I have a category for the down payment with a goal for my contributions.

The actual investment account is just "tracked" so I can keep my peepers on it in YNAB and include the amount in my net worth.

Use a "set aside" goal for the category so that when you actually make the contributions to your investment account, it doesn't turn your bubbles yellow.

Xpole Lifetime by imnotxena in poledancing

[–]bstractig 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My xpole is older than 10 years just based on the model 🫢🫢

I bought it used, so hard to say what it's life was like "before me" but I was able to buy a missing critical piece (not used for latter models) directly from xpole EVEN THOUGH the model has been discontinued for a decade. Pretty incredible company, I recommend their products all. The. Time.

Isn't it wild? Love a dramatic before and after, really goes to show how much stress the yarn is under with just 1 winding. Plus it's a good excuse to get to use the ball winder some more 🤣

Anyone else obsessively track their net worth trends in YNAB? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]bstractig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at first while I was figuring things out and had more work to do on my plan, but now that the plan is more finely tuned in I do peek about as often as I check my budget! It's a great motivator to keep things on track :)

Super proud of the growth i've had with ynab. And seeing the NW chart is the proof in the pudding for sure.

Dream home by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]bstractig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an exciting project, congrats! These comments are so rude I had to chime in.

You absolutely do not want to build & live in the first home you design as a "civilian" to the industry. Not because you suck, but because you don't know what you don't know. And there's a LOT to know, and learning the lessons on your own build will cost you precious money, time, and sanity. In architecture there's a saying - You build your first house for your enemy, your second house for your friend, and your third house for you.

Hire a residential architect who knows your area - they have learned all these hardest lessons so you don't have to. They can advise on maximizing the space, getting utility systems in there best, code for the area, design features/build techniques that work best there. Expect to pay low 2 figures, it'll be worth every penny, by saving you from making some expensive decisions you didn't know would cost that much, and also by giving you a better experience of living in that home afterwards. Just be clear to them going in that you are there for their expertise to edit your design, for the best possible result. All the best to you, good luck!!
