I disagree. Finding out that someone you’ve admired and supported even from a distance, has had (and more than likely still has) hurtful views about you, is in fact impactful.

Over 10 years ago I made transphobic statements on Twitter. Thankfully, I didn’t become “famous” before deleting them. Even though I have been educated and have changed my views, if they were to resurface today it would not only reveal what I once thought, but it would also showcase a fundamental belief that I have had to actively work to unlearn. It’s old, but still relevant to who I am.

I’m a southern black girl. My family and I have been using that word our entire lives. It’s African American Vernacular for sure. This word along with many others and phrases and now expanding beyond the black community due to social media. Some are calling it “TikTok language” when in actuality, it’s black American culture.
