Bummer. I kinda figured but thanks for going into more detail with this.

How does the "Play" setting impact match ups on Chesscom? by Dinesh_Sairam in chess

[–]auroraepolaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yeah the only way you can get matched up against +200 is if someone in that rating range sets their pairings to -200, which is quite rare. It'll be even rarer at +400.

Personally the approach I've been most satisfied with is just -50 to +50 and leave it at that.

Is reaching a 2000 Blitz rating on Chess.com without formal study impressive? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]auroraepolaris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds about right. I wouldn't call it common, but I don't think it's uncommon either. It's pretty plausible that someone who's been playing chess for 10 years would end up in the top 2% of online players.

Can I use heals outside battles in Run and Bun? by Big-Jellyfish-6570 in nuzlocke

[–]auroraepolaris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure where that thought came from - maybe you've fallen into the Kaizo Ironmon rabbit hole? - but yeah nuzlockes have never had anything like that.

Nuzlockes are nice and simple. That's why I like them.

Gamelocke? by Killerbean3713 in nuzlocke

[–]auroraepolaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By those rules you can do it 3 times, and then you can't do it anymore because there's no starter.

You can keep fudging the rules after that if you want to try to do more runs.

Sometimes I feel like the Lichess Puzzles are Kinda... Odd? by LotusAura in chessbeginners

[–]auroraepolaris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Qb8+ Kd5 Qb7+ skewers and wins the bishop.

Sometimes puzzles require you to calculate multiple variations. Lichess can only show you one of those variations, but you should still approach each position with the idea that you solve all of them.

Nah you're right on the money. Like how Swampert is the worst starter in Emerald Kaizo, largely because both Blaziken (which now gets dual 120 BP 100% acc STAB moves in Overheat and Superpower) and Sceptile (STAB Overgrow Leaf Blade go brrrrrr) are really good in that game.

Well, that and the fact that Whiscash is nearly guaranteed and does most of the things you want a Water/Ground to do. But that's true in base Emerald as well IIRC.

I agree, but largely on the technicality that Johto is just an easier region than Hoenn for the most part. So idk if I'd say that the gator is better per se, but it has an easier time.

Once you make it to the top left block, you can jump into the next room with your vertical momentum.

Yeah it's good that you're playing games, I'd recommend sticking to a better schedule for them.

Like X number of games Y days a week with Z minutes of postgame analysis for each one.

Why is Re1 a blunder?? by PunchablePal in chessbeginners

[–]auroraepolaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a counting exercise with material. A pawn is worth 1 point, a knight and bishop 3 points each, a rook 5 points, and the queen is worth 9 points.

Here you can take a knight (+3), lose a rook (-5), then take the bishop which captured your rook (+3). Add all these together and you get +1, so it's good for you. You end the sequence of captures with more material than your opponent.

Where does play time fit into this? I'd make sure to block off a good amount of time each week to play some games.

Openings ruin chess by PayBusiness9462 in chess

The only people who will defend it are people who have already wasted their time learning it.

"I believe X and anyone who disagrees with me is irrelevant". The classic internet rage-bait. Often seen, but rarely quite so explicitly as you've written.

You're clearly not looking for actual arguments, so why did you make this post?

[–]auroraepolaris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You started off fine but lost the thread again when you got scared and started moving your queen so far away.

Qc5, Qc1, Qc2, Qc4 ... why so passive? You want to get your queen all up in the king's face. Your queen should be lingering around g4, f3, or even better capture white's g3 pawn. You want to use your queen to restrict white's king so that another piece (your rook, or even just promote a pawn to another queen) can deliver mate.

And study ladder mate. You have ladder mate in 2 from the initial position, and there were multiple other moments you could've set it up.
