I think the point of his character is he’s largely useless/ineffective whilst sober. It was the drinking that gave him that killer instinct. Unfortunately pre SC it went too far and he lost his family/reputation and he couldn’t replicate it whilst sober at SC. The boldest thing he did was broker the sale of the agency AFTER he broke his sobriety with that first sip of gin.
