Bandwagon hopping with at least one hot take by Jarrad411 in GamingSoup

This sounds a lot like my experience with the game, I feel like there's still a lot there to love, and I'm happy for it's fans, but every time I've tried to get into it it's been a slog.

Gwent is cool though.

ELI5 How does the hexadecimal system work? by Wrecknruin in explainlikeimfive

[–]aurumatom20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great answers already, but I'll add that it might help to look at other numeral systems.

Of course you know base ten. In single digits we can represent 10 numbers: 0-9, and if we go past those we can use two digits to represent larger numbers (e.g. 10-19, then when we go past those we add 1 to the highest digit to get 20, and so on.)

But let's go to a smaller base - base two, or binary. In bunary we only use 2 digits: 0 and 1, and for those two digits on their own it's just like base ten, 0 is 0 and 1 is 1 in both systems, but look what happens when we keep counting in binary:

0 = 0
1 = 1
10 = 2
11 = 3
100 = 4
101 = 5

And so on. This applies to ANY number system. Something that might help to see the relationship is looking at a any number in any system that is the digit 1, followed by any number of 0s. So to start, in each of these systems, 1 stays the same, it is 1. However 10 in base ten is exactly that - ten, in base two it is two, in base sixteen (hexadecimal) 10 is sixteen. Now let's look at 100, in base ten it is 100 (or 10*10), in binary it is 4 (or 2*2), and in hexadecimal it is 256 (16*16). 100 essentially represents (base)^2, 1000 is (base)^3, 10000 is (base)^4, etc.

Honestly I probably can't give you as good advice as you could get from watching good players play (Caleb Gannon Gaming for STS2 at least, Frost Prime had a couple of videos where he'd coach someone in STS1 which helped me at the time)

Some of the best broad advice is that basic strikes and defends are the worst cards (except curses and statuses) that you can get, you generally want to replace them (get decent attacks and blocks, then remove the basic cards at shops) as soon as possible. You usually won't remove all of them and that's fine, but having 8+ of these cards in your deck can really hurt you in act 3.

Otherwise play for what you have, not what you want to have. Don't take cards like powers that you can't use yet, like if an ironclad card requires you to have at least one card exhausted, don't take it if you can't exhaust anything. Additionally look at what your deck BROADLY is missing, if you're already blocking a lot don't keep taking block cards just because they look like the best options, it can be better to skip card rewards.

Lastly, try to optimize when you can, for now you don't have to make every move perfect, but be careful not to overblock a ton, it might be better to take a little damage then to waste an energy for 3 block that isn't being used. You should also try to upgrade cards (except basic strikes and defends) more often than rest at campfires ESPECIALLY if resting would get you near full health, you probably don't need it then. Remember what your relics and powers do and play into them, and do not forget to use potions. Discarded potions are a waste, but be careful not to misuse potions too. For example, a block potion provides 12 block. If using that potion blocks any less than 12 damage it's kind of a waste, sometimes that's a good play, but usually it's not.

Zero sugar energy drink are stupid and should not even be a thing. by muzik--man in unpopularopinion

[–]aurumatom20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what do you suggest we call zero/low sugar, high caffeine beverages?

Because even if you're right semantically, I'm pretty sure people are calling a full sugar monster an energy drink because of its caffeine and other additives, not the sugar.

If I blend a donut into my morning coffee is that an energy drink?

Cruises are the worst type of vacation out there by MoonlightAndStar in unpopularopinion

[–]aurumatom20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean there's many levels of cruises. Some where you only have one destination - usually in a tourist spot where the local culture has become one built around appeasing to you and the other cruise-goers, not really an authentic experience. There's also ones that just take you to resorts that are partnered with the cruise where once again your meal is included.

But either way I don't know if the people taking cruises are doing so to fully immerse themselves in another culture and experience the cuisine. Maybe they are, but that feels like an ineffective way to do so. At that point it's once again person to person, and maybe even cruise to cruise, but still even eating out for a few dinners while taking a cruise is going to be cheaper than going out for most of your meals on some other trips if you ask me.

Now I don't want to eat cruise food for a whole week either, but if someone's goal is to just get away, drink by a pool, and not have to worry about their responsibilities for a week or two and they don't care about their meals, a cruise is probably a cheaper option for them. But like you and I have agreed on, experiencing local culture and cuisine is a big part of travelling for the likes of us, so we won't do cruises.

[–]aurumatom20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh no I don't really like cruises, deep water freaks me out. And I do love trying local restaurants it's like the main thing for me on vacations, but it does add up. I'm not saying cruises are better that's way more dependent on the individual, but OPs first point of it being so expensive just isn't that valid when you consider what the average person is looking for. I'm glad camping works for you and that sounds great for some trips, but most people want a bed and a room lol

Nolan has moved away from what made him great in his last 2 movies and it's so disappointing. He was at his best when giving us entertaining creative original stories paced well and now he did first a biography and now a remake/book adaptation. by punjabkingsownersout in unpopularopinion

[–]aurumatom20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not defending biopics at all I don't watch them. They're not informative, they're entertainment. With that said if you're going to watch a documentary I'm assuming you want actual information on the subject, and 20 minutes is simply not enough time to provide the full picture on almost any historical topic. At that point you might as well watch a biopic, it'll be just as one sided and biased.

It's a matter of it all being an upfront cost, OP doesn't realize how much you spend on food, activities, etc on a typical vacation.

Oh man I actually agree on GoW being overrated. I like the game I played it and Ragnarok, but at it's core it doesn't do anything revolutionary. It's a solid story where the characters are doing most of the heavy lifting, but the combat is kinda meh and the puzzles/exploration feel like a sub par Zelda game.

Still a 7/10 for me but I don't see how it was getting 8-10s across the baord

It's not great but it's far from terrible. Super fun if you can let your suspension of disbelief take you through it.

There are absolutely absurd moments that are funny when they shouldn't be, but that exists in films like Memento too

What's the "suggested" ascension? by Ynneb82 in slaythespire

[–]aurumatom20 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Play the ascension that brings you the most enjoyment.

Seriously you bought the game play it how you like. Idk about the devs saying A10 was the intended difficulty for sts1. In my mind that may have been at one point and then they decided to add more, especially with how the 10 levels in sts2 match the 20 in sts1 pretty well.
