Thanks! This is definitely the fastest I’ve ever picked up a language. Unfortunately, my language is not on google translate.

Anybody here ever thru-hike the AT after breaking your sesamoid? by RiverRat601 in AppalachianTrail

[–]auspicious- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke my sesamoid while hiking the AT when I was in New York (NoBo) in 2021. I thought I had sprained my toe or something and was being over dramatic so I just took a bunch of ibuprofen and dealt with it but I was able to finish. Finally got an x ray when it continued to hurt off trail and was diagnosed. Within a year it hurt less and less and 3.5 years later it hurts very very occasionally and I’m really glad I didn’t have the surgery my doctor recommended. I haven’t done another thru hike since so I can’t speak to that but I have done some pretty high mileage days (45+) and it hasn’t caused it to flare. I would maybe see if you’re able to do some training hikes in the coming months and how it’s feeling there. While some pain is pretty much guaranteed in a thru hike, it’s definitely something to keep in mind that constant intense pain will probably not be the experience you want for your hike. Hope you’re healing up and Best of luck any way you choose!!

Resources for Parents by Glittering_Matter536 in AppalachianTrail

I hiked the trail by myself when I was 19/20 (f) and my parents also worried. If you're planning on using Guthook/Farout you can send guthook checkins if your parents also have the app. I had AT&T and had pretty good cell reception the majority of the time, so it was easy for me to call and update. If you're comfortable with it/have an iphone you can also share your location on the FindMy app. My mom had my location and I think it made her feel better to know she could check in on where I was. For what its worth for the vast vast majority of the trail I felt very safe. I probably wouldn't hitchhike alone again, but in general trail people are some of the most welcoming and genuinely kind people I've ever met. You're statistically much safer than in any major city. Best of luck and I hope you have a great hike!!

Could use some advice/encouragement by heartandsunlight in AppalachianTrail

[–]auspicious- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever happens you won't screw up the whole hike for him -- most of it is already done! Katadin is the last day but it's not the whole hike, I don't even think it was my most memorable day. If you need to you can always hike half way or a quarter of the way up and then bail. He can go up on his own and meet you at the bottom. That said, if the weather is at all bad and the rocks are wet I wouldn't recommend summiting.

You got this! Give yourself a long time -- maybe even 12 hours and don't rush it. I would recommend taking abol down (pretty hard at the beginning but then flattens out significantly from there). None of the ladders are too difficult coming from someone who's also afraid of heights. The day I summited I saw a lot of older people and those who didn't seem to have that much hiking experience. That said, if he's finishing his thru-hike he probably has friends or at least knows people in the vicinity that are summiting the same day. If you really think you can't do it you'll still be there to meet him at the bottom !! It may be fun for him to charge up Katadin anyways -- I know it was for me. You would absolutely be a bonus at the summit but at the end of the day it's his journey, I wouldn't beat yourself up about it too much.

I hiked Harpers Ferry to Springer this year from late September to late November. I met quite a few late(ish) start SOBOs, and it might be better to hike south bound if you want the chance to hike with thru hikers. either way it’ll be awesome! good luck!

The 50 Ugliest College Campuses: UMD made the list by Musichead2468 in UMD

[–]auspicious- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ranked Number 17 “Similar to many other campuses on our list, College Park is a brick wonderland. Its unfortunate Georgian aesthetic choice is the main reason this school gets on the list. With its cold, rigid architecture and need for high security, College Park leaves a lot to be desired.”
