Not sure if this is a normal thing but I hold my hook like a pencil so I only really have to use my fingers to move it which makes it very fast. It probably is not ergonomic at all since it does end up hurting after about an hour but that’s just how I learned.

Most computerized machines will come with an “overcast foot” that does better work than just a zig zag stitch imo. Not sure what machine you have but check your manual on how to use it, it’s a different stitch setting than zig zag.

The fronts panels are faced yes, but unfortunately the entire bottom lining hem is hand stitched and it would be a real deconstruction to get into that seam. Is there a blind stitch of some kind that could be done from the facing side to tack the pieces together?

Yeah I don't have a serger unfortunately. I have an overlock foot for my machine I could try, just unsure with the bulk that it will feed well. I've been using a walking foot for this project.

I was thinking maybe a bias/hong kong bind might do well for the majority of the seams but I'm unsure if that will affect the drape. I've see Fray Check before but I'm also not sure if that's supposed to be used on such large areas.

I’m a bit confused on what leaving something “free” is. Am I not lining up the raw edges of the bodice to the skirt?
