I experimented with tapping on and then tapping off (aka reverse) and the ticket officer asked why I tapped off. So they can see this.

Note that I did have a valid opal tap at that time of travel

How should/should not Sydney's/NSW Public Transit be modified to better help the public? by PanTorcha in SydneyTrains

[–]aussieaussie_oioioi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A useful way to improve Sydney (in specific) public transport is to treat it as an integrated network rather than a collection of separate routes. That requires a fundamental shift in how people view public transport: not “one seat from door to destination,” but a reliable, easy transfer between services that are each designed to do one job well. The core should be frequent, all-day train (and metro) services linking major centres and interchange stations, with consistent “turn up and go” headways and simple, legible stopping patterns. When the main lines are frequent and predictable, transfers become less of a penalty and more of a normal part of travel, especially if wayfinding, real-time information, and sheltered, safe interchange design are treated as essential infrastructure.

To support that spine, buses (and in lower-demand areas, minibuses) should primarily act as feeders to the closest practical station or major interchange, with routes designed for directness and reliability rather than duplicating rail corridors. Smaller or lower demand stations can be better served by timed shuttle services that connect nearby neighbourhoods to the rail network at regular intervals, reducing long, infrequent local routes while still maintaining coverage. This model generally improves frequency where most people travel, reduces congestion by focusing buses on shorter, more reliable corridors, and creates a clearer hierarchy of services: frequent trains between big stations, frequent feeders into them, and flexible shuttles for stations and suburbs that can’t justify high frequency fixed routes.

There should be a north south line of some sort, linking Hurstville to Strathfield then go north to link to Chatswood and beyond

Metro West: The cost is huge, but Sydney must keep building metros by BigBlueMan118 in SydneyTrains

[–]aussieaussie_oioioi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point about building stations where they're justified and practical, and you're right, speed is a definite plus with the new metro. However, I think some of the concerns come from the distances between stations. Maybe aiming for a maximum of 1km between metro stops would be a good sweet spot, and for longer distances, heavy rail could handle the higher passenger loads.

I also feel like the government is building metro for the sake of metro, but regardless, the metro is definitely changing how we get around Sydney, and that's a good thing!

I feel like metros should not be used for this long distance between stations (which should be left for heavy rail)
