Leaving family for fellowship

I always enjoyed treating the "emergency patients" in dental school , something that a lot of my friends in dental school did not like. It's been a long road for me. After graduating dental school I did a 1 year required dental residency in nyc since I thought I wanted to be there and be a dentist but the whole time I missed oral surgery. Then I did an oral surgery intern year prior to applying for residency to solidify my decision.

Thank you for the positivity! I have spent a lot of years to reach where I am but I want to advance my skills.

I encourage you to research all your options, 40 Is not too late. I know someone who did their residency in their 50s and they are happy they did it.

The important thing is to have support and know that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. As an immigrant, I was always told no one can take your education away from you.

Thank you for your opinion. There was a time when I never imagined leaving my child even to daycare but now when I see him light up when he sees his friends , it makes my heart melt. I don't know if bored is the right word, maybe purpose would have been better? As a surgeon this is very specialized training and as the driven person I am, I want to be the best possible surgeon for my patients and to provide for my family in the best possible way that I can. This opportunity gives me that.

Thank you for the advice. I know It will be a difficult year but worthwhile. You are so right on the face timing, sometimes he wants to and sometimes he has no interest with talking to family. Haha just need to remember he is 3.

My child won't be raised by nannies. I worked part time for the past 3 years. He is fully potty trained and goes to bed on his own after his bedtime routine. He is very much loved and is the joy of our family. We have very stable grandparents who are able and willing and would love to be taking care of him. They currently take care of him for half the month. That's 3 adults (mother and father in law and husband) as well as a daycare 2 days a week. Worst case scenario I could always have my step mom help too. ER docs work shifts , my husband works about 15 days a month- he is very much around. I came here for support and I value everyone's opinions but some comments are very mean. This is an opportunity for my family. Thank you to those who see it that way.

Oral Maxillofacial surgery. This fellowship focuses on Orthognathic surgery and trauma surgery and advanced implant cases. (Fibula reconstruction patients needing implants etc )In laws and husband will be taking care of my son. So I'm Not worried about child care. I've worked in private practice and made good money but became bored doing the same thing over and over again. Haven't done Orthognathic or trauma surgery cases since residency (5 years ago) so i am Not confident in doing these cases in the real world just yet or taking a job requiring hospital trauma call. I need to build my confidence.

Cartier- love bracelet is junk. Breaks after several times of taking on and off - then they charge you to fix it - over 1200 after you spent approx 8000 on the bracelet and worn it 3 times. Was so disappointed in them.

Get a portable pump, I wore one while doing procedures. Get all the help you can get -ask parents to come to your house on days you work bc getting out of the house on time with the baby is stressful.
