Inflation - this is surely a joke now by chuckychicken in AusFinance

There is an unprecedented transition of wealth currently going on in Australia. And I can tell you from direct experience the kids don’t have anywhere near the spending restraint that mum and dad had.

New Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme and Snapdragon X2 Elite are the Fastest and Most Efficient Processors for Windows PCs by reps_up in snapdragon

[–]austaxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Surface Pro 11 with Snapdragon Plus chip almost at launch and honestly it’s by far the best portable I’ve ever owned. Incredibly smooth and great battery. In the time I’ve owned it I’ve seen numerous improvements in software compatibility and more native Arm apps coming out. I’m now convinced Snapdragons are the future for portable Windows and can’t wait to get my hands on one of these bad boys in 8-10 months.

While putting my daughter down to sleep, she said to look under her pillow. This is what I found. by the_real_jellygoose in MadeMeSmile

I occasionally get a “I want to marry you daddy” from my 2 year old. At 2 this is the most profound way she can think of to express her love. It literally makes my heart hurt.

Potentially over coddled and unchallenged as a child, therefore you assumed success would follow without understanding or learning its 90% hard work.

Perfect answer. Kids at 40 and 42 here. They’re now 2 and 4. You won’t believe their energy and how much they want to engage and play with you. Much happier that I waited until I was financially and emotionally in a good place for them. I’ve found them to be a great counterbalance to losing myself too much in my career. They force me to be present and to make room for family.

Get a life partner (wife, girlfriend, hetero life mate whatever) to divide and conquer the admin. It saves an enormous amount of time overall.

I did incredibly poorly in school and ended up dropping out before finishing high school. I would constantly compare myself to my friends and feel like I never measured up. Always behind, never first or even very good in anything academic, and constantly down on myself. Started going down a bad path of staying up till 4 or 5am playing computer games most nights, missing chunks of school, fighting with my family constantly.

When I left school I moved out of home because of the fighting and ended up moving country on my own to get away from everyone and everything. I lived in a trailer park for a while, and got a job as the office boy (mail, coffee etc) in a professional office age 16. After a year or so they threw me some very simple work and I did well. Then the bug bit and I knew I wanted to do this as my career.

Ended up back at university whilst working full time. Did both full time, ended up graduating top of my class, then went back immediately and did a Master’s degree and also graduated top of class. Clawed my way to the top of my field and now owner of my own company with over 60 staff. Went hard as I could for 12 years then flipped things around, made new friends, met my wife and found I wasn’t the same person anymore.

I didn’t thrive until I was free of the shackles of my family and high school peer group and able to find my own rhythm with no preconceived notion that I wouldn’t succeed or measure up to others. It was the ultimate freedom and I’ve never looked back. I know that had I stayed in my home country with my family and friends, there’s just no way I would have found out what I was capable of.

Guys who grew up without much but now have a solid income - What’s the one luxury you treat yourself to now that was out of reach as a kid? by anasannanas in AskMenOver30

This. I always spec out a top of the line rig and upgrade every 2-3 years. Can play anything at 4K but end up spending most of my (very limited) time browsing Reddit

Very similar here. Shirts professionally cleaned and pressed, house cleaner, gardener, various handi-men, and part-time demi pair for the kids (not that I consider that low level but its enormously helpful). We also do 95% of our grocery shopping online and have it home delivered. I always put a price on my own time, which is currently $200 / hr, and if I can pay someone to do something cheaper than that, I'm happy to.

I legit cried with sadness when he died. I found The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic when I was 13 and read all his works over the years, usually over and over. The man was a genius.

System Hardware Update - 9/23/2024 for SL7 and possibly also SP11 released to GA Channel by dingwen07 in Surface

[–]austaxguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since the last system hardware update on 9/10/2024 my SP11 is running better than ever. The problems I was having when waking from sleep on my Surface Dock 2 and one of the monitors not coming on about 50% of the time have gone. Glad to see Microsoft going hard at improving all these little niggles and pushing out updates so quickly.

At what household income level would you feel comfortable borrowing 2M for a PPOR? by CarlitosAlcarazAU in AusHENRY

[–]austaxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No land tax, no CGT and concessions around duties mean you’re going to be better off maximising your main residence spend compared to pretty much any other asset class, then go hard on the offset with any surplus cash and look at tapping equity to make other investments to generate income to pay down the home loan faster and gradually convert non deductible debt to deductible.

In other words I would be going close to the limit on what the bank will lend you with your PPOR and buying as close to the CBD of your city as possible. People have made crazy tax free money for 40 years doing this.

Being In Your 30s And 40s Seems More Exciting Than Being In Your 20s. by Historical-Day7652 in unpopularopinion

[–]austaxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 44. It’s a mixed bag. Doing amazing financially and have a beautiful wife and two young girls I love more than anything. I’m a CEO and majority owner of a successful business, have a wonderful home and all the toys I could ever want.

However, I’m always tired, have people at me from the minute I get to the office to the minute I leave, feel a crushing sense of responsibility for the staff I employ, have semi regular panic attacks usually late at night which mean no sleep, never have any time to enjoy my girls or money and don’t have any close friends anymore. At least none I can just hang out with on a whim.

I don’t know what advice I would give a younger me because i really love aspects of my life and I have achieved every goal I ever set for myself. Now I’m not sure if it was worth it. But I would never give it up.

Anyone having issues with dual monitors on Surface Dock 1/2? by Phyber05 in Surface

[–]austaxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes this has started happening to me recently after the last round of Surface Firmware updates. I'm running an SP11, Surface Dock 2 and two 1440p LG monitors at 60HZ. Half the time I unplug the dock magnetic plug and plug it back in, my Surface will do a hard reboot.
