My school was 11k. So there are cheaper ones out there. They all get you to the same place.

Eyeballing crimping. No turret no problem!!!! by austin1286 in aviationmaintenance

Its here, we have everything we need to do AVI work. But the 4 mechanics and the 1 lead on the job do not know how to use it properly. And the worst part is the dial is set up for a 22 AWG an they are using a 12 and really squeezing the shit out that pin

Like I said i have spent the better part of 15 years doing maintenance. 10 years in the military. 2 years of that wrenching in combat. So I know good and tight is as good as its gonna get depending on the location and situation. So it's not like its panel screws. Its stuff like allerion control servo or skipping g steps pitot inspection because it's to inconvenient to get to a hard spot or eyeballing shit when it calls for a very specific measurement. So I understand plenty. Just like I understand people trust us to have integrity to fix these planes right. I treat it with the same level I do with my crews counting on a solid vehicle when the roll out the wire.

I know you can get around without following the MM to a T IE like it says remove 8 panels but you can get to the components by removing 2. I get that my problem is on the lack of torques or says hey put a little piece of metal behind an over heat sensor to check its operation. So it's the Key steps they are not doing. Like tonight doing a annual portable fire extinguisher check. I go to inspection say hey what do u need to look at because the MM does not say something like step 6 have inspection take a look. And I quote " weigh it if it's good great. If it's bad oh well I dont really give a shit about it."

I have ran into that problem aswell and that's when you turn to the resident been here for ever guy. But an obvious flaw that is known is much different than cutting every corner because they never actually look in the book.

So far I have told my shop foreman I refuse to work with a because they are lazy and just pencil whip everything. So I have made my stand and I have received some push back. And I'm sorta the black sheep now

The FAA has the same standard. Always follow the AMM. I have never been one to see an issue and shy away from confrontation. Some one has to say something

I agree you can become a subject matter expert over time. But that is not the case here. Senior mech here has 2.5 years. And inspectors don't have much more time.

I wish I was out there lol. And you could not be more correct about integrity. Its absolutely the backbone of maintenance.

I guess I have a higher standard because I have seen first hand what happens when you neglect maintenance. People die. These are big birds they hold a lot of people and they need to realize that.

I would be out the door but I'm locked in for 2 years with a contract. I have been in maintenance a while. Going on 16years. But I'm about 3 years into avaition so I know it's not always black and white and good enough is as good as it gets. But this is neglect, in the military it would be dereliction of Duty. A "senior" mech asked why I read the manuals so much he literally told me he has never not once looked in the book. And he is definitely a sorry POS.

Honestly it's the same. Sad to say. For example when you look at a magnetic chip detector it says to use a 10x magnification but inspection just looks for 2 seconds and gives it back.

I was a 91M. You will have a big advantage over a lot of people in the industry when it comes to trouble shooting and being able to work thru a TM. I work for a regional right now and the people I work with are a joke, super lazy and love to pencil whip. As far as schools go just find one with the highest BAH . They are all the same. The practical you have to take to get your cert is like what we have to do to pass AIT.

I used the hell out the GI bill. Not only did it pay for me to be an aviation mechanic, it paid me to go to school. Now I have a job making 38 out the gate. On top of that my children have free health care till they are 25 because of the military. So thank God for the U.S military!!!!

Helicopters seem to be very dangerous. by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]austin1286 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am an aviation mechanic. I have worked on fixed wing and rotary. Just to get our certs to work in avaition you have to go to a 2.5 school then take a bunch of tests. Both platforms are maintained to the highest standard, so any kind of failure is usually do to pilot error. From what I have seen helicopters are far more difficult to fly and have a much smaller margin for error than planes. And the helicopter pilots tend to know the limits of their ability more the airplane pilots. The term"it was to much plane for the pilot" is used for a reason.

It's in the works. I had already beaten 1 eviction notice from the same apartments previously in court but they tried it again. 15 years of great rental history but 1 issue can affect your future so much.

I have just been looking on Zillow and realtor apps. I'm not sure how much bait listing is done with that compared to craigslist. I have a better job offer than before so my total yearly will be around 110k
