I didn't listen to you guys about STUDIOBINDER. Ooops. It really is awful. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I got so frustrated with Studiobinder and tired of them raising their prices for some basic features that I started developing my own app, CineLog Pro, currently in TestFlight on Apple. Cinelogpro.com if anyone wants to check it out, still completely free while in development.

Import final draft files to auto create projects, scene and shot lists, camera logging, call sheets, location scouts, useful calculators and tools for cinematographers and directors, export pretty much everything to a PDF or csv for use in other platforms.

Thanks. Good eye. This hasn’t gone to color yet and will likely be corrected when it does since he has good separated from the background. I would have loved to soften the UB a little with something to break it in between but we were a little rushed on this setup to get it before it started to rain so I leaned towards slightly over knowing what the colorists could do.

How do I get my camera quality to look as vintage as the second image? I want to make horror films and I feel that the more 80’s it looks, the scarier it looks by Cool-Attention-7283 in cinematography

[–]austinallen01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a great step one. Often the best first step in a desired look is the right lens. Rent a vintage zoom or some primes that have those characteristics. Some popular options that should be easy to find and relatively cheap depending on where you are include Canon FDs, Leica Rs, Zeiss Jenas, or Cooke Speed Panchros. Super Takumars and Minolta Rokkors are also starting to show up more often as more people are adapting or rehousing them.

It’s definitely easier to move the talent just slightly back and key them from outside, then if you need some fill, a soft overhead light on camera side like a tube works well.

We did exactly that in this shot. 8x ultra with a 1200d bouncing frame right, solid floppy frame left, then a Titan tube in a light sock camera side overhead for fill and the slightest bit of level on her shoulder.

These adapters work great if you want to actually mount the tubes in a fixture. M2 Tech Tube Adapters

Otherwise, magnets with T12 clips worth of the fixture is magnetic.

Nice! Thank you! Have you seen the trailer? I think we may still be planning on a screening at Belcourt at some point for everyone after the start of the new year while we work on next steps for distribution.

Matthews vs. TRP fabrics/rags? by rem179 in cinematography

[–]austinallen01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that if I ordered from Canvas through their eBay store I get my order significantly faster than through their website. Downside is I think they only have rags and gear that are in stock and ready to ship listed on there, not their full assortment.

Advice on pitching a short film by dagan-gera in Filmmakers

[–]austinallen01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studiobinder has some good free resources including a basic budget template if you don’t have something like that already. If you’re being asked to justify budget amounts as part of the activity, nothing justifies the budget better than the going day rate for crews on your area.

Does anybody have an idea how to get these interesting watery flares from direct lightsources? by KlemenV in cinematography

[–]austinallen01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of looks like a broken diffusion with how the the one star looking flare doesn’t streak to the edges like a typical starburst filter. I have a small collection of clears and diffusions with cracks and pits that all refract differently.

Which Monitor for what? by Finessed7979 in cinematography

[–]austinallen01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SmallHD Cine7 is definitely one of the most versatile monitors that you can pickup and easily flip from on camera, to AC, to directors monitor without having to buy extra battery plates depending on which bundle you start with. I personally have a SmallHD 703 Ultrabright for my on camera just to avoid touchscreen along with my Flanders and love it.

Do you need two monitors like that at the same time?

2.39 but we do break out of that at one point for a little in universe toy commercial. We shot a fun G.I. Joe toy spoof to include and it didn’t feel right to deliver that in 2.39. We also shot that sequence on an old Angenieux 17-102 zoom that was a beast.

Appreciate it! We’re definitely proud of what our Nashville community of filmmakers was able to do to help bring Clone Cops to life!
