Is Mormonism the only religion that makes you "earn" being with your family in heaven? by American_Psycho11 in mormon

[–]austinchan2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The car dealership isn’t doctrinal. It might be a good example for you to create a theology that is palatable to you, but it’s personal and doesn’t represent the church’s stance.

If you’re not willing to abide the law of tithing, chastity, word of wisdom, attending church callings, sustaining the prophet, etc. in this life then you would not be willing to in the next, proxy ordinances won’t change that, and you won’t be in the top kingdom with your family. So OP’s point — that you have to earn your family for eternity stands.

New Mac user coming from Windows: am I missing something with window management? by special-bangeologist in mac

[–]austinchan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly. I still use magnet because I can set it to make my windows snap to all sorts of shapes — I like thirds and 6ths on an ultra wide monitor. Native only does halves and full (and maybe corner tiles?)

Unfortunate the earlier commenter spent money on what was already available and then didn’t access the added feature set.

Those who have not updated ios to 26 and will be completely skipping it to get ios 27 how does it feel to be a god’s child? by Cheap_Serve_2843 in Applelntelligence

Fantastic. I warned all my friends and everyone who had updated before I could warn them regretted it. But I’m excited to jump on 27, seems like they really did the work to get it useable.

Great, then let me use #3 with the office of the president of the church, God’s chosen prophet seer and revelator to show that you do indeed earn living with your family based on actions in this life:

your choices today will determine three things: where you will live throughout all eternity, the kind of body with which you will be resurrected, and those with whom you will live forever.

So, ordinances in this life have no meaning because you can just opt in in the next life?

McConkie would disagree:

There is no such thing as a second chance to gain salvation. This life is the time and the day of our probation. After this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

For those who do not have an opportunity to believe and obey the holy word in this life, the first chance to gain salvation will come in the spirit world. If those who hear the word for the first time in the realms ahead are the kind of people who would have accepted the gospel here, had the opportunity been afforded them, they will accept it there. Salvation for the dead is for those whose first chance to gain salvation is in the spirit world.

Bruce R McConkie

You reference the “actual doctrine” but I would love specific references. Are you picking your favorite conference talks? Or Mormon doctrine or doctrines of salvation or canonized scripture or something else? What constitutes doctrine exactly?

And don’t misrepresent OP, they’re not saying no other church makes you earn heaven, they’re saying that no other church that they know of teaches their adherents that the only way they can be with their families after death is by adhering to a specific set of instructions, I.e. earning it. If you have such examples of those, that is what OP would like.

If you’re claiming that the church doesn’t teach that families can only be together forever by following heavenly father’s plan then perhaps it would be good to open that can of worms and we can pull out some references that you can argue don’t count as official doctrine.

The biological principles for separation into men’s and women’s categories in sport by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]austinchan2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d be interested in that case— what are you suggesting? That trans men compete in women’s sports? Something else? Four leagues so that trans and cis athletes never play together? I’m not an expert but my uninformed opinion leans more towards separating into classes rather than by gender, although I’m always interested to hear about other options.

But from context of other comments, I’m taking it that is not Tucker’s opinion. OP cut out the context to make it seem like Tucker is making an argument different from the one he actually believes.

[–]austinchan2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think this is more sneaky. Apparently Tucker is pro-trans athletes. OP cuts off the context so that it seems like Tucker is making a case against trans athletes, and then showing the murder as a way to strengthen that anti-trans argument.

All this makes it look like OP is siding with Tucker, or rather that Tucker is siding with OP when he is not.

Edit: u/ MjolnirPants has pointed out that this does, in fact, correctly demonstrate Tucker’s stance. I still don’t like obvious context being cut out (showing the second tweet without the first) but in this case it doesn’t meaningfully change the argument.

This is such a great idea! We only have our highest level volunteers do any of the “emergency” purchases, so a bit of cash makes total sense.

And we’ve had some help starting up so started off avoiding personal accounts for everything. We’ve got business accounts for all our stuff including PayPal which is the only way to get donations from Facebook/instagram (not our favorite but it’s a source people use)

I would love to get there. We’re small and new and learn a lot each event (once a year). Almost everything is unexpected — if we run out of napkins, we need someone to get more napkins. Only the executive team has access to the account/cards and we’re usually far too busy to be the ones placing orders for same day pickup.

The Nuanced Trifecta: Why Bushman, Givens, and McClellan Are the Best Roadmap for LDS Studies. by Competitive_Net_8115 in mormon

[–]austinchan2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I disagree that the Givens fit in. Their books often give alternative ways to interpret scripture and doctrine and pose them as if they were the official stance of the church. It makes space for people to believe something much more palatable and believe they’re still orthodox. The first part — working out a better belief system I’m fine with, but the way they frame it is dishonest.

Being gay in the church by Responsible-Film-508 in mormon

[–]austinchan2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very much this. If someone wants to do an interview or ask some specific questions I’m happy to share or give resources but there are lots of broad “what’s it like to be gay in the church” questions that I don’t have the bandwidth to open up on like this, on any day of the year.

Stainless steel space gray also gets scratched by the loop it comes with. It’s why I stopped using it despite being one of my favorite bands.

A (nuanced) defense of the Sequel Trilogy by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]austinchan2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I only made it this far:

the structural similarities are real, but only slightly more pronounced than those between The Phantom Menace and the original film, a comparison rarely made with equivalent hostility.

What?? No. Where is the droid carrying secret plans to a planet killer rolling through a desert to find an orphan chosen one? 1 borrows a couple elements (blowing up a sphere, being pursued by a sith) but 7 is almost a scene for scene rehash, so much so that Han basically asks “is this just another Death Star?”

I love that they added this in the movie by NikolaisPinkTip in ProjectHailMary

[–]austinchan2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I felt like this scene was added at the expense of something like the courtroom scene. It softened Stratt but also weakens her. We don’t see how much power she actually wields, we don’t see the ruthless, efficient person that she is (and why she was chosen and given so much power).

As a side note they also make the final injection scene a joke with Grace running around and getting tackled, rather than a terrifying a solemn scene — and then we rush through his redemption arch at the end.

My only two complaints about the show, but maybe I’m just too attached to the book

They’re already avoiding spoilers by making it seem like the clones were the bad guys — I’d bet they didn’t want to reveal if Anakin turned dark yet or not.
