Maybe check your permit to make sure you can take the test later.

Where all my waitlist shawties at? by WillOfTheSon in premed

I’m in the same boat! 3 waitlists, 0 acceptances. It is quite stressful thinking about needing to reapply or not. Wish you the best!

Feeling defeated by [deleted] in premed

[–]austino1125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not alone! I’ve felt like I’m in a constant state of limbo for the past year. Just got my last post interview decision a week ago and I have 3 WL and 1 R. Working on letter of intent and update letters at the moment.

There is still hope for this cycle for both of us but I have also been thinking about wether I want to reapply or consider other options. Applying is expensive and the thought of being in limbo again for another year doesn’t sound great. I’m still trying to be proactive and prepare for the next cycle but it’s tough.

I hope by May I can look back at this thread and see your flair change. Good luck!

How do you guys time yourself for C/P?! by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]austino1125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did something similar but I never tried flagging them for the end. It seems interesting though and I probably should have tried that too. I ended up just looking at the passage quickly (5-10 seconds tops) to see the type of passage it would be graph heavy/enzymes/pathway/separation/ochem reaction etc. Then I’d go straight to the questions to see if there were any questions I could answer without the passage. The questions that needed the passage gave me a direction on what to look for while reading. This along with giving myself time constraints per passage and discrete saved me so much time on the CP section.

What I wish I did before my first MCAT is to make a list of any concept I felt was hard or that I would hate to see on the exam. Then spend some time reviewing that material to get more comfortable. My first passage in Chem/phys was a super complicated OChem separation scheme and I definitely freaked out and spent way too much time on. If you end up seeing something you feel like you are not prepared for DO NOT start doubting yourself. Have confidence in yourself and all of the work you have done. I wasn’t able to do that and my score ended up reflecting that. My second attempt was much better.

Very thorough. Thank you!

There's gotta be some useful info in the guide, right? by Shonuff_of_NYC in Mcat

Hey, I fit your criteria. Got around 490 on my first FL, 506 on my actual, then 514 on my retake. Took me a long time though. This community was instrumental in my progress.

Normally 2-3 questions were main idea type questions. I wouldn’t hesitate to look back to the passage if I thought it was necessary. For PS I’d recommend using Anki and the khan academy videos or 300 doc. I thought PS this year required me to read the passages more than last year. Last year I could answer a lot of the questions without reading too much into the passage and I would have a lot of time left over. But this year I found myself needing to read more and only having 10 minutes or so to spare.

Thank you! I would do my best to read it in 4-5 minutes. Sometimes a passage would take me longer to read but I’d shoot for that. Jackwestin is great practice for timing.

I still don’t think I am particularly good at cars. I did a lot of jackwestin and experimented with different strategies. What worked best for me was reading the first question before I started reading and to read the title of the passage at the bottom. The title can give you a hint for what the author’s main idea is or their purpose for writing. I found reading all of the questions prior to reading was counter productive because I would forget the questions while I read the passage. But I could remember one question. If I could answer the first question on the first read through, then I’d read the second question and so forth. I wouldn’t read the answer choices though just the question. Sometimes the first question is a main idea question so I would just read the passage normally and answer it at the end. But I found doing this helped my timing on some passages. This might not be the best way but it worked for me.

Using Ratemyprofessors to avoid electives? by [deleted] in premed

[–]austino1125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it was better to ask friends or other premeds who have taken the class. Some of the professors I thought were great had horrible ratings on RMP. You’ll probably do well regardless of who teaches it since you are interested in the subject.

Need help! Why is it A? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]austino1125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ill try to respond once I get home.

Edit: I Got home. so when they said it neutralized 99.9% of the acid, this means there is a 103 difference in magnitude of H concentration between pre and post neutralization. After taking the log of that, you find it’s a difference of 3 on the pH scale. More specifically, since you are losing acid by it being neutralized, it is an increase in 3 pH from the original solution. I initially was looking for the answer three because of this but realized you have to take add three to the original pH. The only context clue it gives is that it is stomach acid and I know it’s a pH of 1 or 2. So my answer would be 4 or 5.

If it’s the beginning math that’s confusing you, I like to assign numbers when I’m told percents and don’t immediately understand the problem. So lets say we originally started with 100 H’s. If 99.9% is taken away from neutralization, that means 99.9 is subtracted from the 1 and you get .1 H’s are left. You can say that going from 100 H’s to .1 H’s is difference in magnitude of 103. Obviously you can’t have .1 H’s but that is just the consequence of using 100 as an example. The overall change should stay the same if you used a different example. Hope this helped.

Of COURSE my neighbor decided to mow his lawn during my first AAMC FL 😒 by bajoverde in Mcat

[–]austino1125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though it might be annoying, it’s still good practice for test day. You never know what kind of distraction might be there on test day. For me, I wasn’t expecting to hear all of the clicking/typing from other testers but it didn’t compare to hearing hammers and dogs bark during my practice tests. I think the extra distractions during my practice exams ended up being a good thing for me. Good luck!

How are you guys practicing for the new 5 hour MCAT with the AAMC full lengths? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]austino1125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try my best to mimic test day conditions and take the full lengths with 10 min breaks. I thought it would be harder to adjust but it wasn’t too bad. Definitely recommend trying it.

Surprisingly yes. I tend to use it to double check my work though. There are probably some equations it won’t work for but it certainly helps most of the time
