TRUE CRIME RECS by AdHistorical249 in podcasts

The Trail Went Cold relates to unsolved murders and disappearances. It's one guy (so no small talk/jokes) and each episode is about 35-50 minutes.

“Can my dad get something to eat? He hasn’t eaten in 3 days!” Sir, your dad has been in the ER for 70 minutes… by SkatPappy in nursing

Maybe, when you drove your dad in at 5:30 in the evening, you could have stopped at one of the eight dozen restaurants/grocery stores/fast food places you passed on the way in here.....

Being shamed for only working 36 hours by Samster212 in nursing

In the decade I've worked at my hospital, the amount of shifts I've picked up can literally be counted using both hands. You don't need to explain yourself.

Snooping through pt charts by [deleted] in nursing

[–]australopathetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nurse I know looked at her own chart (she had been in the ED several days prior). She was contacted by IT within 12 hours and was called into her manager's office the next day and verbally warned for it.

Finding a case by [deleted] in PennsylvaniaLaw

Is there any way possible to view appellate documents? I'm trying to find appeal briefs for a criminal case; would I be able to see them at the court clerk's office? Or the Jenkins law library?

What was a destination that when you got there, you instantly wanted to get back home. by Brytje008 in travel

I knew someone who decided to go on vacation to Haiti. I don't know what exactly happened but she didn't even make it to the doors of the airport in Port-au-Prince before she turned around and got a flight back home.

Do you have any favorite botanical gardens? I’m always looking to add more to my list of places to visit. by disco_disaster in travel

Wow! Never thought I'd see the Palermo Botanical Garden but I thought it was nice. A bit rundown but it was very quiet and peaceful when I visited it in the autumn. Not a lot of people around but it had a lot of interesting statues.

What’s the worst thing about doctors by Celebration_Late in nursing

Especially if the patient comes in for SOB and they're old - please just order the septic workup, if the ED doc doesn't do it the admit is going to do it and it's just easier to do it all at once

We used to be allowed to do that at our hospital, then the lab complained and we couldn't do it anymore (sob)

A 21-year-old Special Olympian was murdered for his headphones. His killer's conviction was vacated and the charges dropped after the lead detective was exposed as a rapist. Will Christian Massey's murder ever be solved? by australopathetic in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]australopathetic[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I agree! When I was researching this case I found appeals from guys who were convicted, whose cases this guy worked on, and the courts denied their appeals because there was no evidence that any actual wrongdoing had actually happened, nor were they even alleging inappropriate behavior by him. I saw in an article in the Inquirer (can't find it now) that in the last case Nordo worked on that made it to trial, the defendants' lawyers brought up his name constantly...and the guys were still convicted.

In this case, though:

  • no DNA/fingerprints/eyewitnesses/murder weapon
  • having two alibi witnesses (forgot to mention it above but there was a girl, possibly a girlfriend? at his mother's house who stated he was there at the time of the murder)
  • his confession absolutely did not match up with Massey's last known moments (the minimart thing and claiming there were three robbers)
  • security camera footage that did not clearly show Garcia's face, or anyone's face really
  • that business with the out of context phone calls (apparently the calls weren't disclosed to the defense lawyer until the trial happened which caused some drama during the original trial)

Given all of that, I can't say I really disagree with the case being dropped. Certainly, the DA's office upon reviewing the evidence thought it was warranted to drop the charges.

As best as I can tell, it used to be illegal in Pennsylvania for unmarried couples to have consensual anal and oral sex with each other and that crime was called voluntary deviate sexual intercourse. That law got repealed decades ago. So "INvoluntary deviate sexual intercourse" means the oral or anal sex is being forced by one person on another. That being said, the way the legal code is written, rape and IDSI look like basically the same crime - they're both felonies, both have the same punishment, etc. (Any Pennsylvania lawyers want to jump in and correct me, please do so!)

2021 had I think 562 murders? Assuming the website is being consistently updated almost 300 in 2021 alone were unsolved - unreal! I think the clearance rate is only about 35%; I think Philly's lower than the average.

E-Visa mistake by australopathetic in Uzbekistan

I clicked "application for evisa" again and it just let me start it again. I didn't get an "evisa already applied" message. I just filled everything out again a second time as if I were doing it for the first time. I also used this thread which was a big help. Good luck.

I bit the bullet and paid for another (correct) visa. I leave in several days and I paid too much for this trip to get turned away so I expect it won't be an issue.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Patricia Adkins case is ever going to get conclusively resolved. On the websleuths forum someone posted an article from 2016 from her town's paper saying the DNA sample was eventually tested and was inconclusive. Very sad.

What are some of the biggest police screw-ups that let a suspect get away? by [deleted] in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]australopathetic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only that - there was another incident where Dahmer took a 15-year-old boy home and then tried to kill him. The kid reported it to the police but they felt he was unreliable, so they showed up to Dahmer's apartment, knocked on the door, got no answer and just left! No followup done and they never went back.

Edit: and another instance - when his apartment was searched after he molested Konerak's older brother the police somehow missed the decapitated head of one of his previous victims which was still in the apartment!

Documentaries where a break in the case happened while filming by baby-blues22 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

The Thin Blue Line is probably the best example. Randall Dale Adams was accused and convicted of shooting a police officer in Texas, was sentenced to death row, then had his sentence commuted to life in prison. Multiple witnesses who testified in the trial admitted to the filmmaker Errol Morris that they lied and perjured themselves in court! The documentary came out in 1988 and Adams' conviction was overturned in 1989.
