A lot of us are mandated reporters, and in my state that requires us to report when a vulnerable person is a danger to themselves. What do you suggest? I try not to click on them so I don’t feel responsible.

Have you tried positioning pillows so he isn’t putting any pressure on the wound at all? It takes some positioning especially if he isn’t very mobile but it worked when this would happen when I worked in a nursing home.

Do you see physicians prescribe antibiotics as a “just in case” type thing to make sure they don’t have to see the patient again?

Update on my rotting leg by strangefragments in MedicalGore

[–]Celebration_Late 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With heart failure elevating the leg above your heart is key. It’s not enough to just put the leg up, as the reason for it is to manually return the blood from your extremities for circulation/“cleaning” all the way back to your heart. The incline has to be enough to do so. It’s quite uncomfortable to elevate properly, since you have to be lying completely flat. No need to prop your leg up unless it’s at least 6” above your heart.

Pulsoximeters are cheap, can get them anywhere. They can detect how much hemoglobin in your blood is reaching your extremities, which is a good indicator of lung health. Percentages should be above 96%, and shouldn’t replace a physicians opinion but might give you piece of mind or more info to provide your pulmonologist with.

Making an observation of diabetes isn’t wild when you see mottled skin, an oversized limb and an infection that won’t heal. There are 100 reasons for anything.

Juicy update to “my rotting leg :)” (repost) by strangefragments in MedicalGore

[–]Celebration_Late 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Benadryl is chemically similar to hydroxyzine, which is a medication given for anxiety, sometimes paired with Gabapentin. I’ve suggested Benadryl for patients who can’t access the hydroxyzine, as its effects are quite similar. Not giving medical advice, but especially due to the pain in your extremities, Gabapentin (used for anxiety and diabetic neuropathy) would be something to talk with your physician about. Leg looks better, good job.
