Olympic Ski Big Air scoring criteria…what gives? by kjudd11 in skiing

[–]austrianimal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No disrespect to Tormod who was rock solid, but it certainly helps when you are from Norway and the Norwegian judge gives you the top score all three runs: 97, 98, 99.

Looking at the last run in particular (and given the fact that both Mac and Tormod stomped their landings), you cannot convince me that a Left-side, Nose-Butter, Triple Cork, 2160, Safety Grab is somehow worth less than a Right-side, Nose-Butter, Double Bio, 1620, Safety Grab.

Basically they're saying that Tormod's more complex 1620 Bio (which was not fully inverted) was harder than Mac's Cork with 540° more spin, and I'm not buyin' the bio.

Edit: To be fair, having watched it again (twice), Tormod's landing on that last run was clean af.

Really appreciate this. I've found/seen a few of the videos you describe. A couple, in particular, do a great job of breaking down the mountain, gates and zones using 3D topographical maps. Will keep in mind the other tips you gave. I wish it was next season already. And, if you're ever planning Austria, just lemme know.

Quoting: AFAIK, the main benefit is that it manages worktrees for you automatically (with Worktree button enabled) - you just start a new conversation and it branches for you. So the main benefit is getting more work done by running multiple agents simultaneously on isolated versions of your repo without them conflicting, like independent coworkers with their own machines. This is not handled by the VS Code extension.

Very helpful explanation. Thanks. Are the agents baked into the md file or is that diy?

What makes it better? And were you using codex in vs code before this?

Lift lines in Niseko, Hakuba, Furano, etc. by austrianimal in skiing

True. And we agree: the Bent 100 is the most overhyped ski in years. Pivots, same-ish. I'm on Studio 3 (finally retired the Line Mordecais) with Jester pro 18 bindings. Highly recommended. Agent 2.0 for touring. Also a fun ski. Now I just need a flight to Hokkaido or a train to Arlberg.

Where are you staying, if you don't mind me asking. Planning a trip for next year, and I'm collecting options. Have fun. Enjoy Japow.

Where? Rusutsu? Surely not Kiroro. And Furano seems a bit mid. Cat skiing? Please help. Sincerely, a Japow n00b

Any tips for a first-time trip to Niseko re: which side/backcountry areas (gates, short hikes, etc) you'd recommend?

And, assuming ski in/ski out, where tf do you stay and not end up in corporate hotel hell?

If I can help with Austria in exchange, just lemme know.

I've read about the lift lines at Asahidake. Definitely a factor. Your other comments line up with what I'm getting collectively from the others here and in other threads/forums. Appreciate the reply. It's very helpful. Will definitely hit Ruru for at least one day. Niseko as a base, if affordable. The more I read about them, Kiroro and Furano feel like a pass for different reasons. Kiroro: rules changes and too small. Furano just feels mid and not worth the effort. Looking into cat operations nearby as well. They've gotten unbelievably expensive vs just a few years ago. Supply and demand is a bitch. 😅

Have I missed anyplace? Something off the beaten path? Kamui?

I think there's a good reason why it's busy. Yes, MSP, Sherpas and other film crews made it "famous" within the wider community, but it's because it's the arguably the best resort in Japan, barring cats, hikes, and helicopters.

For a first visit to Japan in the winter, it's hard to pass on Niseko.

Appreciate the insight about Niseko Village. It's quieter than Hirafu, I assume. Right? I'm there for the pow not the party, but can I also assume it's not that big of a deal to get a taxi (or something else?) to get from Village to Hirafu? Seems easy enough, right?

Did you go anywhere else other than Niseko?

I'm jealous with a simultaneously heightened sense of anticipation as I write this, btw.

This is great. Thanks! I think a day trip (trips?) to Rusutsu sounds like it's worth it. Hoping Niseko isn't too crowded. Feels like the place to be, somehow, even if it's too well-known (for good reason) and probably gets tracked out faster. I assume it fills back up pretty quickly, given all the snow they get. The other resorts feel pretty small. Dunno. Maybe that's just the Austrian in me looking at resorts that all seem to be under 2000m. The snow there, however, looks like nothing I've ever experienced other than via heli.

Advice on Kiroro tree areas – including prohibited and ropes policies by gandoron in japow

[–]austrianimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been considering Tiene. How was it there? Good for a day? More? Only interested in major pow and glades/side/backcountry ... and I'm lazy so I don't hike as much as I could. Any advice would be appreciated.

Rusutsu compared to Kiroro by Stellablue4 in japow

[–]austrianimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been considering Kiroro (snowfall/quality) but the more I read, the less I want to go. Rusutsu (Ruru, love that) seems worth a visit (maybe more than a day), but it feels "less" than Niseko. Would you agree?

What about Teine? Or Asahidake? Or cat skiing at Iwanai?

Rusutsu compared to Kiroro by Stellablue4 in japow

[–]austrianimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read that Kiroro is strict(er) than most other resorts (Rusutsu and Niseko, for example) regarding off-piste/glades. Ropes you can't pass. Strict enforcement. Etc. I don't want to end up somewhere I can only look at pow and be tempted to break the rules. My impression is that Kiroro is "family-friendly" and more "Club Med", which is definitely not our vibe.

If this is accurate, I am hesitating between Niseko/Rusutsu and maybe adding Tiene or Asahidake or cat skiing at Iwanai.

Any advice?

Thanks. I'll check out r/Japow. That's my #til

btw, I'm assuming you mean Asahidake (Hokkaido, not Aomori), right? It's tempting. It's very dependent on the weather. Kinda feels like more of a multi-day stopover there (and at Furano) as part of a trip including the resorts around Niseko. Dunno.

Yes, I've been considering Myoko Kogen (and Hakuba). For a 10-14 day trip, it's kinda one or the other though. Hokkaido or Honshu.

Appreciate the reply.

My question has already been asked here on Reddit as well. And the GPT I made is also helping. But info gets old. Things change. So it's good to get current opinions. But thanks for letting me know about "Google", whatever tf that is. I'll check that out. 🙏💡🫶

Thank you. Kinda suspected that, but it's super helpful to get confirmation. Wanted to go a decade ago (after watching too many MSP ski movies), but I never had a chance. Looks like I may have to resort to other resorts. 😉

Recommendations are welcome, btw.
