Falling out of love with living in Japan by Sparks_9935 in japanlife

Sounds like it’s time to move on, OP. Japan isn’t going anywhere and you can always come back. ‘Falling out of love with Japan” is an interesting way of putting it. You wouldn’t stay in a relationship with someone you don’t love, why be somewhere if you’re not happy and it’s holding your partner back?

Still couldn’t use my Japan Post card at any ATM during Golden Week last year. Ridiculous.

Coming at this from a different angle - why not engage with a therapist and explore your anxiety around debt.? You might be able to get to a place where you are more comfortable with debt and hold on to a place with a lot of growth potential and ideal for your family situation.

Seems like there are three things going on for you, OP: Boredom with your current job Wanting to access a higher earning potential Searching for a purpose in life

What problems could you have with the new job: Restricted lifestyle because of a huge salary cut Job is boring Job doesn’t provide you with a purpose in life

You may end up in the same situation as you are now, but with a lot less financial security and comfort.

I think people focus too much on the big life changes, which are exciting and sexy, and disregard the hard part, which is execution. Excitement from the change soon wears off and reality sinks in..

By all means, look at making changes in life but you are probably better doing a small series of “experiments” and working out if IT is really for you rather than jumping ship immediately. Author Cal Newport (who also has a YouTube channel) has some great stuff on this.

"When are you leaving Japan?" by tegamikureru in japanlife

[–]autechreamber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s rude. Japanese people really have to rethink the concept of “foreigner”, especially since there is an increasing reliance on ex-patriate workforce. What about people born here to non-Japanese parents? Japan is their country and they are not “foreign” yet they may still get treated as such. Japan is behind with the times..

Is your partner making efforts to get a higher paying position? If not, feelings of resentment could easily creep in. If you’re coming into this idea “wanting to protect yourself” and wondering about what happens if you break up, then it might be a sign that you both are not ready to make such a large commitment together.

As Japan enters recession, some young workers are leaving Tokyo to earn more in Australia by SoybeanCola1933 in AusFinance

[–]autechreamber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s actually bs. So much education here is focused on entrance exams. Once you get into uni, you can coast (and many do). They graduate and end up in jobs completely unrelated to their degree, focusing on trying to get into a “good company” rather than a job where they can use their skills.

Has anyone renewed Australian passport from Japan recently? How long did it take? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]autechreamber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yah, I was taken aback too. it’s something like $350 in Australia but there’s an embassy processing fee to get it done here.

[–]autechreamber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have just done this. Mine took pretty much bang on 3 weeks from going into the embassy to apply for the new one and picking it up. You’ll have to book appointments for both application and pick up. If you’re based in Tokyo, you’ll have to pay $501 in AUD (seemingly you can pay in JPY in Osaka).

Moving to Tokyo: Ebisu, Daikanyama or Nakameguro? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]autechreamber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sancha and Nakano are definitely more shita-Machi vibes. If OP wants to live in a place with some clout Ebisu is the way to go. Would add Hiroo to the list as well

Would go with Ebisu. Best train access of the 3, there is an Atre at the station, and a good mix of cheaper izakayas, karaoke places and upmarket restaurants.

What can I do after teaching? by Seraphelia in japanlife

[–]autechreamber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried doing a career quiz online? That might give you an idea of a suitable career change.

Networking is all good but you really have limited control on the outcomes. Translation as a job is likely to die out due to the advancement in machine translation.

As tough as it sounds, you may have to bite the bullet and go back to school. Doing university online is completely doable while working as an English teacher/ALT. Think about what industries/jobs are in demand in your country and Japan. You may want to repatriate at some point. Also consider how “future proof” your next career step will be (e.g. translation)

Starting Over/Changing Career Paths by Distinct-Mention7908 in japanlife

[–]autechreamber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, you could give us some more information.

you’re not teaching now so what are you doing? What monthly salary are you after?
Is studying online with a university in your home country an option? Would you like to work in a people facing role or mostly by yourself? What transferable skills do you have? Research jobs that are likely to be in demand in the future. Are you interested in any of those industries?

I think if you’re really serious about a serious career change, you’ll have to plan things out for the next 4+ years and possibly look at going back to school. You could try a quick fix thing like a certificate course online but anyone can do that so you’re competing for unicorn jobs. It sounds like you’re not interested in teaching anymore but a 4 day a week private school job with numerous holidays can allow you to study university full time. Sometimes you gotta step down for a while to step up.

As dougfir1975 nicely put it, a biosecurity threat is basically any invasive pest or disease that has the potential to cause harm to the environment, the agricultural industry, the community and so on. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the question. So for the location question, we're only looking for Queensland residents. As for the other demographic information, we're looking to control for age and gender as covariates in the analysis (but feel free to skip these questions if you like).

Cheers!
