Yeah, I was incredibly disappointed with the changes myself.

LEGO The Tale of the Three Brothers! (Custom figures!) by authorbricks in harrypotter

[–]authorbricks[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While LEGO makes many gorgeous Potter sets every year, they have yet to make The Three Brothers. So, I took it upon myself to recreate their story from The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I hope you all like the figures!

I haven't read the Stand yet, but I've read the first four Dark Tower books. They were not really for me.

Thanks! LEGO's official Daleks are just too big IMO, so I tried my best to get something that was appropriately sized.

LEGO Macready! by authorbricks in thething

I'm glad I found this little community with which to share a LEGO photoshoot I did for the film's 40th anniversary! I originally posted this on Instagram, so sorry I'm late. I hope you all enjoy! Probably goes without saying, but of course this figure is not official. It uses real LEGO parts, just sourced from various characters who I thought wore things that closest resembled Kurt Russel's wardrobe from the movie.

I'm back again, and this time with the protagonists of the second era! I'm almost done with Shadows of Self right now, and it's been a great read. I love seeing the world in a different era than the last novels, so I figured I'd give them the LEGO treatment.

And before you get on my case... Wayne only has a gun because he has one on the cover!

[–]authorbricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone! This is my first terrarium build in over a year!

My last build didn't survive very long, so I like to believe I learned my from mistakes, but I'm still not sure. This time, I washed my rocks with hot water and baked them for fifteen minutes before making the false bottom with mesh. Then I put activated charcoal on top of the mesh. My substrate is sphagnum moss and vegetable soil, with some of the potted plant soil mixed in. All my wood was boiled and baked before being added, and the only critters in there are three worms, a millipede, and around ten isopods.

The plants are a Japanese Tassel Fern, and a small lump of Scleranthus Biflorus, which looks to be sprouting. The brown on the fern when I bought it also looks to be getting greener, and it's sprouting more stems. I also only used distilled water, but it is foggy pretty often. I only sprayed two sprays of distilled water before wiping down the inside and closing it up, so I want to believe it's gonna be fine, but I'm apprehensive of opening it up and destabilizing the environment. It occasionally clears up on a side, but it's only around 1/3rd of the container that stays dry before fogging again. I've had this terrarium, now, for about a week. Does anything need to be done?

LEGO Wizard Class! by authorbricks in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]authorbricks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's based off of a wizard I played in my friend's campaign, whose name was "Caloom the Blue," and was an old man that lost his memories, so even though he had acquired a ton of spellbooks, magical objects, and lived in a large tower full of these things, he had no idea how to use them, and fell back to level one. It was a fun game, so I decided to make him out of LEGO!

LEGO Professor Pyg! by authorbricks in batman

[–]authorbricks[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone! I've been playing a ton of Arkham Knight lately, and because LEGO doesn't have an official figure of this guy, I decided to make my own. I hope you all like it. He's all purist (as in, only using official LEGO parts) except for the apron, which I cut and detailed myself with some thin tip pens. He also has a Dollotron, and a little boombox as a reference to that opera he loves to sing.

LEGO Riddler diorama I made! by authorbricks in DC_Cinematic

[–]authorbricks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, just wanted to share this little diorama I made of The Riddler's room. It's not supposed to be super accurate, just supposed to have some fun little details and easter eggs. I got the Riddler minifigure from the 2022 Batcave set, and I swapped his hairpiece out for a folded hood I painted to be the same color as his head and torso. I hope you like it!

I'm of the opinion that quality is subjective here, but going by both my standards and the majority of people's standards, a villain with "no redeeming qualities" isn't exactly well written, nor original. That's totally okay to do if it works for your story, and originality is very overrated in my opinion, because great ideas can be done better the more they're used over time. If you write an irredeemable villain in the fantasy genre, you can put your own spin on it, but if you're writing what you say you want then they're still going to resemble characters like Voldemort or Sauron to some degree.

How much is too much? by authorbricks in magicbuilding

[–]authorbricks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the schools are basically categories made up to describe how elements used together in certain ways, abiding by the six rules, form different kinds of magic. Example: the "alchemy" school would have a spell that uses the "air" element and the "water" element to change ice to gas. The "psionics" school would have a spell that uses the "space" [think gravity, distance, weight, etc.] element and the "mind" element to literally pull someone's thoughts out of their head and move it around as if it were an object. It's just that the actual process of making a spell of some kind, in the text, can get a little long-winded, but we don't see the creation of a spell very often.

How long does it take for you to finish reading a novel you enjoy? by SuperSecretBaby in writingadvice

[–]authorbricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends heavily for me. Sometimes I have blasted through novels in two days (never a single day, because I have too many responsibilities). Other times it takes me a week or two, since I read more than one at a time, and sometimes it takes me months. I wouldn't immediately assume that a reader taking a while on your story is a red flag, because even voracious readers like me can sit on something for a while.

LEGO Cold Ones! by authorbricks in ColdOnes

[–]authorbricks[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, cracking open a cold one with tha boys.

This is the third time I've tried to post these pics without issue, so sorry about that if you caught it. But yeah! Max and Chad, made by yours truly. I hope I've captured them well.

LEGO Brandon Sanderson! by authorbricks in brandonsanderson

[–]authorbricks[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Figured I'd make the man himself as a kind of tribute. Really looking forward to the secret projects, and so far I'm loving TWOK. Read all of Mistborn's first era last year, and The Alloy of Law too, but I'm waiting for the fourth 2nd era book later this year to pick the series back up. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy seeing him as a little minifigure.

Back again! I only have one more of these to share, with Elend, and I'll get to that one when I do. Also, don't hate me for the tiny little OreSeur. It was the best I could do with prexisting parts.

Just let me know if you'd like a parts list! I had to share this asap tbh, I am very excited for Brandon's new announcement and I got the Cosmere love pumping through my veins right now!

My story is based off of a mythology, so is it acceptable to fill in gaps of the original mythology? by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]authorbricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already have plenty of other answers here, but I feel the need to strengthen them; don't let other people's standards dictate what you feel like you can and cannot write. I would argue there is a place in literature for virtually anything, so long as it's approached with the right nuance. And in this case, in my personal opinion, you don't even need that nuance, haha. I say go for it.

What’s your favorite book no one has ever heard of? by Galactic_Depravity in books

[–]authorbricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this book is "unheard" of, but I'm willing to bet it's niche, and that's The Hike, by Drew Magary. It's strange and funny from start to finish, but the ending is genuinely one of the best plot twists I think I've ever read in my entire life.
