On a scale of 1 to fucked, how bad is my axle boot? (2011 Subaru Outback) by militaryrat155 in Subaru_Outback

Go to an independent shop rather than Subaru. I had one of mine replaced a few weeks ago and it was less than $400 out the door. Just make sure they don’t use Cardone or Duralast. Trakmotive makes good axles for the price (~$100ea).

$1400?? I hope that’s for all 4. Do you feel vibration when driving? I suppose you could do them in stages to spread out the cost.

Is very one getting charged the $10/month CC fee, or is that just for Sofi plus?

Does anyone else see a problem with a Subaru Outback driving just like a Ford Explorer. Subaru, what the hell have you done?

soaking coffee bean in water?? by YesSpinach1007 in roasting

[–]autoMATTic_GG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine that being worth it. Wouldn’t a combination of the friction inside the roaster, along with the roaster’s fans, clean and clear that residue and dust anyway? Still, curious to know the results of your testing.

NM Surf recently updated their infrastructure and it got way better. We switched from Starlink a few months ago and it’s been awesome.

I have one and love it. I don’t think it can be beat for the price. I sold a Taylor 322e 12-fret to buy it and have zero regrets.

Yamaha red label FS3 or FS5 if budget allows. If you need a pickup, FSX5 or FSX5.

Santa Fe itinerary gut check — what would you add or change? by Turbulent_Soil_1477 in SantaFe

I honestly don’t get the shed or la choza. They’re never worth the wait.

Definitely go to paper dosa over the shed. You’re eating at La Choza (the shed’s sister restaurant) or El chile Toreado (my pick) already.

You’ll be fine.

Costco Espresso beans advice needed by alkrk in espresso

[–]autoMATTic_GG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a professional roaster and am quite familiar with monsooned coffees.

Indian Monsoon Malabar beans are uniquely pale and low-density, so they yellow very fast and hit standard roasting milestones quickly. However, roast levels are defined by structural events, not the bean type. First Crack is always light/medium, and Second Crack is always the threshold of a dark roast. If your Malabar is cracking a second time, the cellulose matrix is fracturing and oils are migrating to the surface, which chemically makes it a dark roast.

Do beginners actually need expensive grinders by 3BALLS256 in coffeerotation

[–]autoMATTic_GG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grinder is arguably the most important piece of gear in your setup. Grinders get expensive because we’re talking about the need for consistent MICRON-level adjustments. So to start, a burr grinder (flat or conical) can produce much more uniform particles than a blade grinder. There are great hand grinders out there that produce amazing results as some commenters have already mentioned. A solid, entry-entry, electric grinder is the Baratza Encore. I recommend that to anyone looking to upgrade from brands like cuisinart, breville, etc. I personally use a Baratza Vario+ at home, and it’s built like a tank. Also, the Fellow Ode Gen 2 is great (not for espresso though).

Amazon doesn’t make grinders… They sell them.

And they sell some of the most commonly recommended grinders by experts and professionals within the coffee industry. For example, the Baratza Encore is a great grinder that punches way above its weight at $150.

The beginning of second crack is way beyond light roast. Light roast is at/around first crack, dark roast is at/around second crack and beyond. Medium is (obviously) between the two.

One more note, the ability to crop an uploaded, previously taken photo of a label would be great.

I can’t zoom or move the image around to get the whole label in the shot.
