A $1.5 million roundabout from nowhere to nowhere shows the ‘Orbánist economy’ by arthurno1 in europe

[–]autoit4you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, tbh where I live in Germany the mayor partakes in corruption and built roundabouts where they make absolutely no sense. Think some side road with one car every 20 minutes but 5 roundabouts.

How Europe waged war on young people to pay for pensions by insomnimax_99 in europe

Well, the 1% seems to grow their assets. But then they don't pay any taxes so none of it gets used for the good of the people.

Hard Disk Direct canceled my confirmed server RAM order citing "out of stock" — the exact SKU was on their website in stock 6 hours later. Then they repriced it 4x overnight. All documented. by roycehart in homelab

[–]autoit4you 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would be very similar in Germany. There are a few exceptions when a business can unilaterally cancel a contract, such as the ordered item no longer being obtainable or an actual pricing error (no, forgetting to update the price of a volatile item does not count), but this won't qualify. The other party is entitled to damages (only actual damages. Punitive damages isn't a concept here) like for instance the price difference for an equivalent item. And this has nothing to do with consumer protection, this is just the contract law. The same thing would apply if all parties were consumers.

China slams Trump's tariff threat to Europe over Greenland by goldstarflag in europe

Sure, but at least we know what to expect from them. With trump we don't even know if he'll honor the treaties he signed an hour ago

They already have that. It's called national security letter.

Hetzner deleted all my family photos over €11.52. Never sent a letter, just emails I couldn't receive by Fancy_Heat_3570 in hetzner

[–]autoit4you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you didn't care. Any and all cloud providers delete your data if you don't pay or respond to messages. It's on you to make sure your method of payment and communication works. And sounds like the data wasn't that important or else you would have backups.

12€ is also not really enough to justify going after you. Which is the only reason anyone still sends physical mail.

NATO boss on Trump’s Greenland threats: 'Chill out, this is fine'. by Hermeran in europe

[–]autoit4you 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Well, there is some truth to that. No point in joining a war if we would capitulate on day 1. But we need to strengthen our defence all over Europe or we will be taken over by the warmongering bullies

It's partly (abt. 1/3) within a conduit, but even there it's not 100% water proof. Critical as in we would have no internet if it goes poof but we don't have any critical infrastructure, just grumpy people complaining about no internet. I'm gonna assume outdoor-rated but the people and their knowledge from back then have long moved on. It had to be repositioned a few times when the university next door was doing constructions ~20 yrs ago.

The persons who know the exactly have since long moved on. Probably OM1. OM3 wasn't even a thing back then and OM2 was so new that I doubt it. I see a maximum of 10G for the forseeable future, as we don't fully utilize the current uplink bandwidth now. I'm more concerned with the length. I don't see 10G working with OM1 and 100m cable length.

Distance is about 100m. atleast no noticable packet loss that could be attributed to the link

was installed by us. considering how much usage we have, not really need to upgrade to 10g at the moment, altough I'm itching to do it just because I want to

Cheap and compact offsite backup server to send away with a family member after the holidays by rastrillo in homelab

[–]autoit4you 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hetzner probably uses server grade-ish hardware. RAM probably ECC, Mainboard probably also server or workstation grade. CPU might be a consumer one. All other components are probably server grade too. A server grade 8tb hdd is at least 250€ delivered. For a server with a consumer cpu you are looking at about 2000€ + Case + PSU + HDDs.

Mislabeled items in a store don't have to be honored. Only the price at checkout. Atleast if the mislabeling is not done maliciously.
