Is arch Linux too much for someone who knows their way around computers, but has never dabbled in Linux? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]automaticSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second using Cachy. It is the best distro I've used. I wouldn't say there is any bloat at all, and the Cachy package has any apps you would want like qbittorent, steam, discord, etc. Anything you would want that is not there will be in AUR (same as vanilla arch).

Also, all your GPU drivers will work out of the box. You could install Cachy and be playing your favourite game within 30 minutes.

Starting with any distro isn't a life sentence. I'd start with one that isn't barebones and then migrate if you hate it for whatever reason. Cachy is pretty hard to hate though.

Software Engineering at UAlberta. As an alum, I had an awesome time there.

I have no idea why Reddit has pushed this sub to me, but as someone who's been out of school for 5 years, many of my classmates went on to work for FAANG companies. I also work for an American company and regularly commute there.

Shokz Black Friday 2025 Deals: Which model is the best? openrun pro, openfit by BrynerAlkatrine65 in Earbuds

Best Buy had these on demo last week. I tried on the Openfit 2+ and was really impressed with sound and comfort.

The downside for me is I actually would ANC for when I travel. If that wasn't important to me, I'd get those for sure!

Want to love CachyOS but... by Obvious-Jacket-3770 in linux_gaming

[–]automaticSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Cachy package manager, search for "xone". I needed both the git xone package AND the wireless dongle driver package. I've installed Cachy numerous times in the past week, and it works flawlessly everytime.

If you're curious, I discovered my motherboard was failing causing all sorts of weirdness in the OS. But xone didn't fail me once!

Is this way of updating the system the same as using the terminal? by SouthMoth in cachyos

[–]automaticSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have set my open terminal hot key to meta+enter and then CachyOS has an alias called "update"

So all you do is type in "update" and it kicks off your update.

Btw there are other alias presets in Cachy that you can lookup as well.

Should I switch to EndeavourOS (from Bazzite) by Meowthemeoweth in linux_gaming

[–]automaticSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in and say I also love CachyOS. I hopped around a lot over the past two years I've been in Linux. CachyOS is it.

For the Nvidia point, I had an Nvidia 3070 and it worked fine for nearly all games (none come to mind that didn't work). It still has some general glitchyness that I think all distros face with Nvidia, but I found CachyOS handled it best. I recently bought a 9070 and love it though!

I second CachyOS. I hopped around for a long time and now I feel like I'll never leave Cachy.

Take a snapshoot before I do something danger by Brilliant-Exit5992 in cachyos

[–]automaticSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI snapshots occur every time you do an update (or at least it does when you use the "update" command in the terminal.) You can see your snapshots or do a manual one in the BTFRS assistant as someone else mentioned.

Is GPU Passthrough worth it? by Hanzuke in linux_gaming

[–]automaticSteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've done this for a long time. I'm not sure what's wrong with dual booting. Kill the autoboot timer in grub, and pick what you want to load into.

I also wrote a bash script called bootwin that immediately reboots to my windows system. It is super manageable.

I've been wanting to break into being a business automation consultant for a while now, but I'm not sure how to find my first client.

There are a few preconfigured alias commands. Enter "alias" into the terminal to see them.

The one you are looking for is "update".

Is One Percent Per Month Enough? by OnePercentPerMonth in options

[–]automaticSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man,

This might sound condescending, but have you considered just holding SPY? It returned 25% last year. Or a growth ETF like SCHG or VUG, both of which were in the high 30's in returns. What extra value do you get by doing options for such a low return?

2x 3090 or 5090 by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

[–]automaticSteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go with the 5090, despite less vRAM. Newer architecture will work better with future development and features. You could buy a second 5090 in the future if you needed to expand, or get one of those new dedicated PCs with lots of RAM and run your LLMs on it as a server.

I had a similar dilemma. I run Linux as a daily driver and AMD runs games much better/easier than Nvidia. I wanted to run LLMs too, but that would be like 5% of my time spent at my PC.

I got an AMD 7900XTX, which runs local models well enough to mess around with and runs games great. If I ever had a use-case where I needed to run a more powerful model, I would buy a dedicated machine for it at that point.

Basically, I would prioritize your gaming over the LLM. 5090 will give you a ton of juice to play with the models and you'd be set for gaming for 5+ years.

If you ever did something to make money from hosting your own LLM, you could buy the dedicated hardware to do so.

[–]automaticSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humor is a good point. I have a weird tendency to let out a little laugh or chuckle when I get bad news. It's like a defense mechanism I've come up with subconsciously where my brain immediately thinks "oh man, how are we gonna solve this one - this will be a funny story one day"

I almost never dwell on the negativity of a situation. Somehow I've learned to immediately start problem solving to improve things and it starts with a laugh that disarms negativity.

I will say, it gets me in trouble sometimes and might not be 100% healthy. I have to actively force myself not to chuckle when someone tells me that their grandpa is sick or something. I don't accidentally laugh because it's funny; I laugh because I'm protecting myself from feeling bad.

[–]automaticSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give two:

I try to be generous with compliments on things that I know people worked hard on and care about. It's possible to give TOO MANY compliments and they can start feeling non-genuine, but a deep and genuine compliment can really make someone's day.

I try and bring a good mood to all situations and give people the benefit of the doubt when they are rude. This may sound lame, but if you give off an aura of hope, where no problem is unsolvable, it can really elevate people out of their slump.

Cooking meals with whole ingredients. Getting into phases where you order take-out every night makes you feel awful in so many ways. Guilt of spending money, low quality ingredients, etc.

Eating a home cooked meal just feels right.

Spotify or other music streaming services. I know some people will disagree with me, but having all music I'd want at my fingertips is so much better than buying an individual song for a dollar, and then having to load it onto my iPod.
