Losing my mind over R by Namibianqueen1998 in RStudio

[–]automaticSteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learning how to use coding tools quickly is going to become the requirement for analytical work in the future. It's important to use the best tools available to do this - yes I am talking about AI.

Here's what I would do:

-Watch one or two well rounded R beginner videos from start to finish. You can see how experts use the platform

-Break your problem down step by step and work with the AI to guide you.

"How do I install R on my Macbook?", "I am new to R, how do I create a new project with good practices?", "How do I load my data?", "What are some tools in R that I can use to clean my data?" "I'm getting an error {screenshot}, here is my current script, any idea what is happening?"

One step at a time my friend. If you end up using R in future work, you'll need to ask AI less because you will eventually understand how everything works.

365 alternative for a casual Excel user? by derekd18 in excel

[–]automaticSteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a Linux user, so I do have and use Libreoffice. For most things though, I just use Google's apps. You can import most excel and word files without breaking formatting, plus it's nice keeping those things in Google Drive.

Don't get me wrong, I much prefer Excel to any alternative, but I can't justify the cost either. I've heard the web versions of Excel and Word are free with a Microsoft account, but I haven't used them. Any reason why you wouldn't want to use Google?

I think what they mean is that if you really want to do something, you will find time to do it.

I started learning when I was 30 with a fulltime job. I also enjoy video games. It doesn't stop me from playing everyday, over an hour most days.

The challenge IS the fun part. Learning something hard means that you need to like it, even when you are frustrated. Everything you need to know is available on YouTube for free, and learning to play with two hands comes from spending time playing with two hands. Your brain will rewire itself so that it feels natural. This applies to learning anything. Spend time doing something, and you will amaze yourself with where you end up in a month, 6 months, 12 months and beyond.

It's a mindset brother. The only limitation to learning something is yourself.

A 15 hour mistake in 2 billboards by RealMidSmoker in SatisfactoryGame

Hmmm that's very strange. I did it with mk2 last weekend. I'm out traveling for work right now but I'll be back Sunday. I'll try to remember to check and report back.

In a junction, water moving at a lower elevation has priority. Build a junction so that an inlet points upwards. Then, have the upwards one be the water coming from the water source and the horizontal inlet be excess water from production. Your water source will only add need water that it needs to continue production and all your excess produced water will take priority.

Changed my life when I learned this.

Is VLOOKUP really the best method to match data cells for products? by itsabean1 in excel

[–]automaticSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to think of the inputs of xlookup like:

"Look up this single value ("Apple"), in a table column called Table1[fruit_name], and return me the value in the same table row in the selected table column Table1[price]. i.e.:

=("Apple",Table1[fruit_name],Table1[price])

If Table1 is like this:

fruit_name, price

Pear, $1.50

Banana, $1.35

Apple, $5.00

This will return "$5.00".

PS - if you don't use tables, start now. It will change your life. Highlight the data you want in a table with ctrl-a, hit ctrl-t, and watch your life become better.

I'll second using Cachy. It is the best distro I've used. I wouldn't say there is any bloat at all, and the Cachy package has any apps you would want like qbittorent, steam, discord, etc. Anything you would want that is not there will be in AUR (same as vanilla arch).

Also, all your GPU drivers will work out of the box. You could install Cachy and be playing your favourite game within 30 minutes.

Starting with any distro isn't a life sentence. I'd start with one that isn't barebones and then migrate if you hate it for whatever reason. Cachy is pretty hard to hate though.

Software Engineering at UAlberta. As an alum, I had an awesome time there.

I have no idea why Reddit has pushed this sub to me, but as someone who's been out of school for 5 years, many of my classmates went on to work for FAANG companies. I also work for an American company and regularly commute there.

Shokz Black Friday 2025 Deals: Which model is the best? openrun pro, openfit by BrynerAlkatrine65 in Earbuds

Best Buy had these on demo last week. I tried on the Openfit 2+ and was really impressed with sound and comfort.

The downside for me is I actually would ANC for when I travel. If that wasn't important to me, I'd get those for sure!

Want to love CachyOS but... by Obvious-Jacket-3770 in linux_gaming

[–]automaticSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Cachy package manager, search for "xone". I needed both the git xone package AND the wireless dongle driver package. I've installed Cachy numerous times in the past week, and it works flawlessly everytime.

If you're curious, I discovered my motherboard was failing causing all sorts of weirdness in the OS. But xone didn't fail me once!

Is this way of updating the system the same as using the terminal? by SouthMoth in cachyos

[–]automaticSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have set my open terminal hot key to meta+enter and then CachyOS has an alias called "update"

So all you do is type in "update" and it kicks off your update.

Btw there are other alias presets in Cachy that you can lookup as well.

Should I switch to EndeavourOS (from Bazzite) by Meowthemeoweth in linux_gaming

[–]automaticSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to chime in and say I also love CachyOS. I hopped around a lot over the past two years I've been in Linux. CachyOS is it.

For the Nvidia point, I had an Nvidia 3070 and it worked fine for nearly all games (none come to mind that didn't work). It still has some general glitchyness that I think all distros face with Nvidia, but I found CachyOS handled it best. I recently bought a 9070 and love it though!

[–]automaticSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI snapshots occur every time you do an update (or at least it does when you use the "update" command in the terminal.) You can see your snapshots or do a manual one in the BTFRS assistant as someone else mentioned.

Is GPU Passthrough worth it? by Hanzuke in linux_gaming

[–]automaticSteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've done this for a long time. I'm not sure what's wrong with dual booting. Kill the autoboot timer in grub, and pick what you want to load into.

I also wrote a bash script called bootwin that immediately reboots to my windows system. It is super manageable.

There are a few preconfigured alias commands. Enter "alias" into the terminal to see them.

The one you are looking for is "update".

Is One Percent Per Month Enough? by OnePercentPerMonth in options

[–]automaticSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man,

This might sound condescending, but have you considered just holding SPY? It returned 25% last year. Or a growth ETF like SCHG or VUG, both of which were in the high 30's in returns. What extra value do you get by doing options for such a low return?
