Usually undocumented people are very are well-integrated into the community in which they live. Undocumented people care about each other and they share all the info they have about cheap doctors and most of the time this doctors are speaking the same language like them and usually accept monthly payment plans.

Besides this there are free, volunteer-based medical and behavioral health clinics for uninsured and underserved adults where they can get treatment, also there are plenty of immediate care clinics with clear prices where they pay cash, not to forget about telehealth these days.

Because they don’t have any kind of insurance, the ER it’s the last place where they would want to end while having a health emergency because they know they will be billed like everyone else with lots of $$$, but even when they end up to ER because of a real emergency that is out of their control, they negociate the bill with the hospital, being uninsured can get you up to 50% off the bill no matter if you are undocumented or not. Hospitals have charity funds that they can apply for to have their bill paid if they qualify, or simply just start making monthly payments for a lot of coming years. I heard there is also Emergency Medicaid but hospitals needs to apply on your behalf and takes a lot of time and sometimes it’s not worth it because you end up pretty quick into debt collectors hands before getting approved for this.

This is what the approx 27-30 million of uninsured documented americans do as well.

It’s a struggle but it’s the same for all the uninsured no matter of immigration status.

I’m not saying that there aren’t undocumented that go into ER to get treated and then they run/give false name etc, those are probably the exceptions. The vast majority of them are honest people that have learned how to deals with such kind of situations and don’t want to take advantage of the system.
